I think I have fallen in love with this old man. He's hilarious and even though he's stopped making, I think that he's something of an inspiration to many people. And his little comment about not selling anything till 30 years after he's dead made me laugh :D
The thing that doesn't make sense to me is that if the violins just sit there and don't get played then their tonal properties don't really develop fully. It's likely that most of them haven't ever been played in all the way. Why just let them sit there and not be played? They're his violins and he can do as he pleases, it just doesn't make sense to me personally
I started at age 50. Now at 67 I don't sound too bad. I get invited into bands all the time. My grandmother picked one up for the first time at 70. At 80, she and her twin sister were touring Arizona and played for the governor of the state. Any instrument is easy to play in a careless manner. All instruments are difficult to play really well.
yeah it's never too late to pick up the violin! So long as you can make the movements and love the sound, do it. I just picked it up last month and I'm 25. I don't let anyone tell me I'm wasting my time or I'm not going to be any good. Young people aren't any better at learning, they just have the time to do it! I don't see any 5 year olds taking college full time with jobs and relationships whilst learning to play.
@SwampAshHSS Well, I've played guitar since I was 8. I just started the violin though, and I play it a few hours a day, I am taking strings at school.
@Vintexen I started when I was 15 and I majored in violin performance in college. I'm 27 now and I'm a violin teacher and a member of an orchestra. I even got to win a concerto competition at a state level. I'm not meaning to brag I'm just trying to encourage you not to give up. I'm not going to be famous or anything but I'm doing fine and I'm having a great life doing what I want to do. So can you and anyone else who's concerned that it might be "too late".
@SwampAshHSS I agree. I started early but I have a friend who started really late...and he practiced and practiced and he's better than me now, even though I've been playing for five years more than him. He's an amazing inspiration and I think that no matter what, no one should EVER give up music because they're "not good enough." That is the absolute saddest phrase a musician can utter.
also, he probably couldnt become a good violinist for the same reason he doesnt make his violins as he used to. he probably didnt have enough time until his age affected his performance
that'll be my father at 98. "disgusted with my craftsmanship" there is a certain type of man, a modern artisan, who is lost in our sea of mass production.
i love his nose, lol

For all we know in 250 years they could be cherished like the Strativari violins are now.

So sad that he never really got to be a violinist. Making violins for so long, he lost the ability to play.

He is a violin maker who has not sold any of his instruments... I wonder how he survived. By renting them?
I think this collection will become incredibly valuable 30 years after his death.
