I have all but one of John's CD's (can't locate one here in the UK as yet) - a fantastic musician with some of the grittiest singing and guitar you'll ever hear.
@fireballkiller Where do you think Stevie Ray got Pride and Joy from???? All blues players traded and borrowed just to make good music. This was WAY before SRV wrote Pride and Joy and is where he borrowed it from.
@xeridian I will correct myself, since this is in 1986 so this wasnt recorded before P&J but Pride and Joy had only been released 2-3 years prior to this, SRV was in fact influenced by Muddy Waters in the writing of P&J so I can see the relativity in his choice for callback.
Thanks for this. Used to see him play when he worked at Matt Umanov's in NYC and then once by surprise at Jazzfest in NOLA. Found out he played regularly at a place called Monsoon in NYC and we'd go see him regularly until we moved away. Not too long after we heard he'd died and I always wondered how. I never thought his recordings did him justice, so this is good to see.
This is so great to see. Thanks so much for posting. I used to see him play in NYC as often as possible in the late '80's. One night on his birthday he just brought the house down. It was a real magical moment an evening I'll never forget. And then he told the story of how he got his dobro and who it originally belong to.
I'm not that surprised he died of a heart attack - look at the tension in him as he plays. It's interesting - some musicians seem to be one with the music. The music and the musician are on equal footing. But Campbell plays like he has the music by its throat. I don't know if that is good or bad but it's impressive either way.
i am personally not impressed with this guy. he's obviously got some skills on the guitar, but there's somethin about him that just doesn't sound good.
@dirklonger The playing is not that great? In that case, I'd like to hear some of the music you listen to, it must be godly. Or maybe you just don't know what you're talking about. I really am curious though... What sort of music do you listen to?
Fucking awesome... Fucking legend and underated Musician!

Gibson should post this: here's what TONE is, in the hands of a gifted player and interpreter of the Blues. A real bluesman.
