@genesis070365 According to Dave Dunnington's Guide to Genesis Radio Shows, it's from one night later, November 29, 1981 at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, Long Island (NY). The live versions of “Behind The Lines”, Duchess” and “Turn It On Again” on “Three Sides Live” were recorded there too. I also have this version of “Firth Of Fifth” on the CD “Best Of ’81-’83 / The Vertigo Years” from 1991.
I normally like his interpretations. He did fine on the Duke tour, the We Can't Dance tour & a few in between. But, here it was just.....well, what I said earlier.
@excelerater He is not playing this solo note for note. But he comes pretty close on more recent tours. Never understood the Strat during this song. Maybe if he was playing a Les Paul or a PRS it would of worked better. This tone is pretty compressed. Hackett had such a warm thick tone where every note seemed to mean something. One of the best solos EVER written.
If there was a complete reunion with Peter and Steve, they should definitely do this song in full and not as a medley. They should retain Chester and Daryl, and the guitar solo should be made into some sort of guitar duel with Steve and Daryl going back and forth and coordinating. Good idea or what? :)
Yeah, it's too bad. I believe he wanted to but gave up for practial reasons, as a (grand) piano was too bulky and heavy to carry aorund, and the piano samples at that time simply weren't good enough...
I think is the best performance of this song with phil collins as well, his singing is outstanding, I though this was from the mama tour '83, wasn't it?
Spectrum in Philly was first, followed by Nassau on 11/29 and I beleive that Brenden Byrne Arean in NJ was 12/10. I was at all three venues that tour.
I saw the Abacab tour show at the Spectrum and then at the Nassau Coliseum that was taped. Phil was disappointed in the audience partcipation durung I Know What I Like asked that the crowd to wake up. They performed "Like It or Not" for perhaps one of the few times ever that night. I was about 20 rows from the stage and recorded it.
Hey Domkippy.. I think the intro was done in 73-74 on the Selling tour and then again in 76 when Brufford played drums.. Perhaps in 77 a few times - but doubtful... I've heard that Banks, never being comfortable behind the boards, kept screwing it up and thereby dropped it forever.. I know Musical Box does it.. If you know better than me let me know. Cheers, Matt
thanks glickton i ve been searching for this version for 10 years got it on a tape best of 81 / 83 but i lost it .
MY two favourite versions are this one and the
archive70/75 ONE each has something spécial i like soul ful phil s vocals and the new drum and bass swing and in the old one organ, mellotron and hackett sound are magic
Damn, sucks to be an American sometimes, as we do not get exposed to good ol' prog enough! The Organ sounds authentic in this song, as opposed to a keyboard simulating an Organ. I kinda miss Phil "prog" voice, as he sounds more English than American in this song
I saw this show in in East Rutherford, NJ and at the Nassau Colliseum in Long Island. The shows were like 10 days apart. This tour was in the U.S. What sucks is to having to ignore most music that came out since 1980, no matter where you live.
hey drunk 3.. Man, no matter how much I think I know about the band something else hits me.. I had no clue they played this on the 81 stretch before the encore the following summer. I wish they had videod this if they did it at Nassau.. Were you at Nassau?
No, F of F is not included on the 45 minutes.. This always amazes me.. I"m so used to the Seconds out version. Then to hear the ambiances of an Abacab tour instrumental sound is cool.. Kind of like Scotty in Star Trek being able to tell how fast the ship was going by feeling the deck plates.. lol. I can listen to any live genesis song and tell you what tour.. I'm such a fanatic! A birth defect I think.. Cheers, M.
They should have included this song on the Three Sides Live album, man. Although there is a bootleg live performance titled "The Real Three Sides Live", it contains the song "Firth of Fifth". Interesting note: I think it was either the Savoy or the Nassau one, probably both. My advice: Get the bootleg version; you get the full concert recording, not the "doctored" one that was released in 1982.
Hey funnydude.. Ok where can I get the "real three sides live"? I've looked everywhere. Too bad they didn't just keep the cameras rolling on the abacab tour at Nassau.. like they did for the duke tour. That was a whole freaking concert; no cut ups or doctoring.. Thanks for the post.
OK, matthewimi. Let me bring you up to speed. I've found out about this through a Genesis Bootleg web site. I don't have the bootleg of that concert, but you can check out a list of Genesis Bootleg performances using Google. I hope that helps. Thanks for your interest in the greatest prog rock band next to Pink Floyd. You're a winner in my book. Later on.
Funnydude, you and I have that in common. Pink Floyd and Genesis are the two greatest bands in rock history. Both bands are best concerts I ever went to. This was left off of both the Three Sides Live album and video for reasons I can't figure out (same with The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, The Carpet Crawlers, Dance On a Volcano/Los Endos (with drum duet)). This version appeared on a European best of released in 1984/85.
Floydgenesisnut, thanks. I appreciate that. I hate to sound like I'm old, but this kind of music is better than the crap that's polluting the airwaves.
I'm 33 and some of the 1980s Genesis albums I remember as new releases. I recall seeing Abacab all over the record stores when it first came out. Then The Mama Album was huge when it came out. Genesis just got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Pink Floyd were the lone prog rock band in until now as Genesis joins them). Alot of people don't know that the same group who did "Hold On My Heart" also did classics like this.
That's true floydgenesisnut. My former boss thought Genesis started in the 1980s, when in fact, the band started in 1967. It took them two years to release their first album, which didn't sell well. But with time, their records started selling like hotcakes.
All of their albums sold well except From Genesis to Revelation and Calling All Stations both of which flopped. The latter flopped so badly that Genesis didn't tour the US to support the album. Also ticket sales went down because of Phil Collins' departure. Each album did better than one before it. The Lamb sold more than Selling England. Then A Trick of the Tail did better than The Lamb and so on and so forth sans CAS.
True. When Calling All Stations was released, I took the time to listen to it. My favorite songs on the album was Calling All Stations and Congo. At the time, I couldn't see why they could continue without Phil, who's been with the band since 1970. He was the one that kept Genesis going longer than expected. After The Lamb was released and Pete quit the band, they thought, "OK, either we find a lead singer or we call it quits." The next album helped the group out big time. It's my favorite.
Thanks for posting this up. It sounds very like the B-side of the That's All 12" single, which was recorded at the Savoy, New York in 1981 according to the centre label.
@GLICKTON It may be New York (The Savoy Theater?), 1981. It sounds exaclly like a concert I recorded off the radio back then (King Biscuit Flower Hour perhaps?) It's the same concert that was put on Three Sides Live.
I agree with you on this one. This is the best version of Firth of Fifth ever. It's a shame they do not play the full version anymore. But still, it's a nice song. It's the song that got me listening to Genesis in the first place.
Phil collins volta pra bateria!!!!!!

This live version is magical! Love the full/long version of this song, no medley. How great does Tony sound here!?

I agree. It was as if Daryl (who is a brilliant guitarist) was trying too hard to "prove" he was different from Hackett.

Daryl has not played Hackett well since day one....Esp in this song, however it's tough to be better than the original in most instances

:( Yeah...
And the song got butchered in a whole new way on the 07 tour, because they only played about 3 minutes of it....-_-
domkippy 2 years ago
Yeah - even shorter than in the "Old Medley"... Travesty!
felsner1 2 years ago
They did the same thing to Cinema show....but that's also because Mike doesn't remember how to play ithe first part...(He said so)
