I am reading a poem by Frank O'Hara, "Ode (to Joseph Lesueur) On The Arrow That Flieth By Day"(1958). Leg bender of a title! Anyway, he mentions this piece in the poem. Thought I would check it out. I didn't know Aaron Copeland wrote atonal music. Inspired! Thanks for posting this.
Is this the theme from "windows vista-the musical"? I can understand this in films where any lingering harmonies may detract from the onscreen action, but I have to ask: at what point during the performance is the pianist forced to make a run for it? I recall Copland. With any luck I may be able to repress that memory and never acquire the aural perceptiveness to "appreciate" this. Just saw "with simple expression" How about no expression as in "silence"?
to 4444matthew4444 Thank you i love this and the Piano variations have heard the latter unable to find this fantasy heard it at Tanglewood with masselos
wonderful music and performance. Sara Laimon is a great pianist and she creates something with this piece that is a lot more intelligent, cohesive and beautiful than I've heard before. Congratulations!
I have never understood why this piano masterpiece has never 'caught on' significantly on the concert circuit : do the public have such short attention spans now ? I regard it as one of Copland's finest works - in any medium. Complex & lengthy musical pieces such as Messiaen's Vingt Regards for example often get played in their entirety... I don't think that 25 -ish minutes is too long to bear ! Fabulous playing from Sara Laimon here. Thanks so much for posting Matthew.
Very engrossing and a welcome change from Sonata and Variations. I guess its length has prevented it becoming more popular on the performing circuit which is a pity. It's certainly a more worthwhile piece than say Carter's Night Fantasies...
Copland! Yes! He well understood the very real Art of Economy - what the French call "depouillement" - to strip away to only what is essential. My teacher interviewed him here many years ago on ABC TV. I have a cherished photo from that time.

Great piece, but one note...
This piece was NOT commissioned by anyone. Many suspect it is a venting of his frustration after the McCarthy hearings/Lincoln Portrait debacle.

When listening to the Piano Fantasy, one must listen to all four parts. This is how one can achieve a comprehension that is satisfactory. =)
In other words: Playlist it Baby!!
