You have to understand; this was a tutorial for unexperienced trombonists. If all of you all are pros, why don't teach the right way to your students instead of wasting time watching "incorrect" tutorials. And if you're not teaching kids this, then why are you watching a tutorial?! You do make yourselves look horrible, all of you!
@rayfudge15 I find it fair enough that trombone players that watch this are upset at a completely wrong technique being demonstrated concerning breathing, but I see where you are coming from.
@rayfudge15 These videos are featured/sponsored suggestions on videos of professional trombonists in action. Why shouldn't musicians and educators be upset when sponsored tutorial videos teach children improper technique, speaking of which, youtube has age restrictions, who said these were intended for kids?
@looseforward The fact of the matter is that, musicians' and educators' anger won't change that this video is an improper instruction. And he does mention that he uses this technique to teach children.
@danielthomas99: not all professionals are good teachers... and not all great teachers are professionals. Do us all a favour and show us how it's properly done... that is, if you're a professional AND a good teacher AND willing to take the time to video-record a tutorial on trombone. My students (and I) would be very appreciative.
@bonemad888: I think his point was to make children aware of how deep the air can go. As you breathe in, your diaphragm contracts and flattens, allowing it to move down, so your lungs have more room to grow larger as they fill up with air, hence the idea that air has filled up near the bottom where you diaphragm sits when completely contracted.
@yjloiselle valid points re what happens when the air goes into the lungs but again it mustn't be by breathing through the nose....breathing through the mouth demonstrates your point.
breathing through your nose...are you sure? who taught you how to play, a cellist?
most importantly, breathing through your nose will not get you enough air fast enough. see how he has to sit there and inhale for literally 5 seconds to fill up his lungs? what about when you only have the space between two sixteenth notes in a passage to breathe?
and secondly, if we're talking about a solo piece, people can hear you breathe through your nose and it takes away from the musicality of the piece.
This has WRONG INFORMATION! You do not breathe through the diapgragm. The diaphragm is a muscle which primarily helps you INHALE by creating a vaccuum in your lungs. When someone uses this type of misinformation, it makes me wonder if they really don't know that much about playing a wind instrument.
Take a breath and RELEASE the wind for a good sound.
all you kids who can't afford lessons should order beginner technique books. you would get a lot further than what this guy is offering. and the fastest way to get good is to just practice on your own time.
yeah but im not taking that long to take a breath before a song It do simple breaths snag one inbetween messures if im shaking cuz i dont have enough (Im bad i know) or on rests so i cant take that long to get a single breath of air
I also think a lot of comments are taking the mick unfairly. Why not raise your shoulders to increase capacity? Why not slur an octave without a legato tongue? Breathing through your nose can be helpful to master a good embrouchure. (see Caruso method).
also, when he says breathe from your diaphragm, he just means dont lift your ribcage when breathing because you breathe in LESS, dont lift ya shoulders etc, when you breathe in, your diaphragm should go out with your stomach, not in. trust me, ive played the clarinet and trombone for like 7 years
this guy is a deesh!! a trombone is CYLINDRICAL BORE not conical, conical is saxophones and all that whatnot, also, dont breathe through ya nose, its harder.
the slide is cylindrical (there are rare models where also the slide ist conical) , but the bell is always conical. you can't put the tuning slide the wrong way in. i guess that'll prove the bell is cylindrical
Trombones are Cylindrical not Conical. And breathing through your nose is not a good idea at all. And how do you "breathe with your diaphragm?" Your breath through your mouth/throat and fill your lungs. The diaphragm is what causes it all to happen, and you definitely don't breathe "through" it.
Oh dear. I agree with all the comments that point out the lack of correct information he has put out. To add to the bad advice of breathing through the nose, breathing "into" your belly/diapragm and how he stopped his air flow before he played the note, the trombone is technically considered to be a cylindrical bore instrument, like the trumpet. The flugelhorn, french horn and euphonium are examples of conical bore instrument, which have a more mellow tone.
I can't agree with the previous comments, there are different ways to breathe when playing the trombone.
You can breathe through your nose, absolutely right. I also prefer that. The Thoracic diaphragm gets stimulated and you can let more air in. While playing though, you won't always have the time to breathe through your nose only, you have to use your mouth too, otherwise you won't get enough air.
As I said there are different ways, this guy in the video explains it pretty good imo.
He looks so tense when he breathes through his nose which is NOT good technique. You are quite right you don't have enough time to get a good breath in through the nose which is why you should breath through the mouth. I'd love to see him demonstrate this when he has a cold!
NO NO NO NO .. never breath through your nose!!!!!.... think of your lungs as milk bottles and fill up from the bottom through your MOUTH!!!..... beginners DO NOT listen to this guy!
"Firstly, ALWAYS inhale through your MOUTH and not your nose. Secondly, it is physically impossible to breathe into your stomach. Your stomach is for food, not air!
Bad, bad advice."
TRUTH ^
please do not breath thru your nose... and ya haha you cant breath into your stomach...
This is improper breathing. First you should breathe through your MOUTH always. Second he's building tension in his body which is obviously coming out in his small unsupported sound. Third, you should NEVER breathe in a hold your air in your throat, your inhale and exhale should be one continuous relaxed motion. No one should learn anything from this guy.
i agree that breathing through the nose while playing isn't as efficient as breathing through the mouth, however breathing through the nose makes you (as he says himself) fill your lungs from the bottom and up. Once you know what that feels like, you should try to use the same muscles (diaphragm muscles) to pull air through your mouth. Doubt he's saying "always breathe in with your nose" cause anyone who plays a wind instrument would know that that wouldn't make sense :o)
Firstly, ALWAYS inhale through your MOUTH and not your nose. Secondly, it is physically impossible to breathe into your stomach. Your stomach is for food, not air!
I've always been told to breathe in through the mouth, and particularly not through the nose. It seems like breathing through the nose is a little harder as its a narrower passage and quick breaths are harder to get in. But you are right about the diaphragm vs. the chest in the air source.
Your tone isn't vey consistant there, Mr. "Good" Airflow
