Yes, I believe that much of that footage is propaganda. Not all of it, but much of it. From the camera positions and angles, these are clearly not documentary films. It is obvious to me that the filmmakers intended to convey certain ideas, and not merely document Soviet training methodologies. As for Vasiliev: nothing he is shown doing in this video is even remotely realisitic, and most of it will get you maimed or killed if you try it in the real world.
This has nothing to do with geography. There is not a single "attack" in this video that is even remotely, mechanically realistic. In every scenario, the attack is sloppy and easily defended against. What can be learned by practicising against this way?
@Colimarche come to Russia or any former soviet republic and you will see we are totally diffident people. Every possible attack is sloppy and easily it just mater of your skills level ;)
"practice every movement slowly and smoothly. Then gradually increase your speed until
every movement can be executed with lightning rapidity." W.E. Fairbairn in "Get Tough" or "How to Win in Hand-to-Hand Fighting (as taught to the British Commandos and the U.S. Armed Forces)" 1943. Fairbairn was the Hand to Hand instructor at Camp X near Whitby, Ontario where many OSS agents were trained.
In Systema, we also practice slowly in order to build up skill and speed.
@Colimarche Fairbairn also writes in Get Tough, "I should like in conclusion to give a word of warning. Almost every one of these methods, applied vigorously and without restraint, will result, if not in the death, then certainly in the maiming of your opponent. Extreme caution, then, should be exercised in practice, care
being taken never to give a blow with full force or a grip with maximum pressure." This too also applies to Systema practice and learning.
Everything in this video is from propaganda films, from choreographed demonstrations, or against compliant opponents or indoctrinated students. Bunch of hooey.
@Colimarche This is what we call learning in the east, you people form the west never understand this because this is something deeper than reason of money or what makes pain or what not...
@Colimarche The best propaganda is indistinguishable as such. Also, it is meant to be widely broadcast. To the best of my knowlege, until the fall of the Soviet Union, Systema was a military secret. As such films of it would not likely be widely transmitted.
Furthermore, the clips of V. Vasiliev are from commercial products produced and sold in North America and hence are not "propaganda" in the sense you are using the word.
@buboetherat I have all of the Vasiliev videos from which the footage in this clip was taken. There is not a single "knife attack" shown that resembles anything close to reality. The speed of the attacks aside, the mechanics simply aren't there. This is no "professional work" depicted, despite Vasiliev's constant use of the phrase. There is absolutely no point to practicing against such ridiculous scenarios.
@Colimarche What's unrealistic about the over-hand knife attack on Vlad at 4:32? That's a classical attack often depicted in WMA souces such as Talhoffer and the like. My point is that defenses against that attack have been documented by many sources for centuries. If you object to the speed, it's a demonstration and also you lack understanding of the teaching method used in Systema.
@buboetherat That attack is amateur in Talhoffer, in F.M.A., and in Systema. I understand the teaching method. I also understand muscular acceleration, efficient mechanics, action is faster than reaction, and that the guy who attacked Vasiliev initiated that particular attack from too far away, moved his arm in too wide an arc, and over-extended himself, and didn't know where to place his bodyweight. It was like watching an Aikido demo.
@Colimarche So, you think Aikido is crap as well? I have little experience with Aikido, so I cannot comment. The operative word is "demo". You are criticizing the knife attacks as not being the best examples and somehow using this as evidence that the principles applied are useless. Remember, the purpose of the videos are not to prove effectiveness but to demonstrate the concept to a viewer. Also, you can't learn martial arts from videos ;)
@buboetherat I don't think Aikido is crap; I know it's crap. It works in the dojo against other Aikidoka, and nowhere else. I think you are tapdancing around the truth because you either have no experience with violent confrontation and don't understand what a real fight is, or because you're caught up in the fad of worshipping Vasiliev/Ryabko/Systema. Vasiliev sells videos.
@Colimarche So, you've run out of arguments and started with the ad homenem, eh? Well, tell me then, what system of martial arts have you founded, like Kadochnikov, Ryabko and Vasiliev? Where are your videos? Where is your international school headquarters? What law enforcement and military agencies have you trained? What tv shows have you been on?
@buboetherat I'm not arguing; I'm pointing out how Systema is stupid and Vasiliev or Ryabko are going to get one of their cult members killed someday because of that true believer's blind devotion. That's your argument for the effectiveness of Systema? So, because Kadochnikov, Ryabko, and Vasiliev sell videos or post videos of themselves on You Tube, that means Systema is valid? Because they have "international headquarters", that means Systema is valid?
@Colimarche You are avoiding the question. You've held yourself out as some sort of expert on the topic, ever ready to criticize, yet you have no established credentials in this area. It's easy to call something crap, but difficult to be believed if you don't have any experience to back it up.
@Colimarche Having videos, trainees, schools, videos and tv appearances make their work a lot more valid than your anonymous pot shots from behind your keyboard.
@buboetherat Because there are videos of them doing the same ridiculous "work" with compliant, young men in uniform then Systema must be valid? Because They've been on T.V. then Systema is valid? If those are your criteria for determining the effectiveness of a fighting method then you shouldn't be surprised when it fails you the first time somebody attacks you for real.
@buboetherat There are all kinds of "instructors" who are running, and have run, the same con game that Vasiliev and Ryabko are running right now. Kadochnikov is the only one who can be said to have founded a system. If Ryabko is to be believed, then what did he found? According to him, he learned Systema from one of Stalin's bodyguards, and that Systema dates from the tenth century. Vasiliev learned from Ryabko. They didn't "found" anything.
@Colimarche My point is you do not apparently have the same level of credibility as they do, like it or not. You are not a recognized authority on the subject. Just because YOU don't like Systema or Aikido doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. You call the methods etc. crap, yet you offer nothing to back that up except your vague assertions that it is so.
@buboetherat No, "demo" is not the operative word here. If the "attack" does not follow realistic lines, then the "principles" used to defend against it are worthless. I think that you simply do not understand how fast and how aggressive a real knife fight is. I am criticizing Systema's "knife work" because nowhere in the universe will a knife attack ever occur the way it's depicted in a Systema scenario.
@buboetherat There's a video on You Tube by Kwan Lee, who is one of Vasiliev's top cult members, in which he "demonstrates" defense against a knife "attact" at "full speed". Notice how many quotation marks I used. The "attack" was not done at full speed by anyone who understands the realities of a knife fight; it was done by one of Lee's students who only understands Systema principles. It was slow. It was awkward. It was telegraphed.
@buboetherat As soon as Lee touches the attacker, the attacker gives up and starts to curl into a fetal position, while Lee slaps him some more. That is not the way a skilled professional or hardened criminal is going to behave when he's is determined to stick that knife in someone's gut. The "principles" simply will not work in reality. You are never going to disarm someone my grabbing the knife out of their hand. You are never going to redirect a knife in motion back into the attacker's body.
@buboetherat You are never going catch a hand or wrist of the knife arm, moving at full speed with intend, and apply a wrist lock or an arm bar. Nobody intent on sticking you in the gut is going to let the knife hang out there while you twist to the side, and lever it out of hand with your belly. Nobody in the real world holds a knife in such a weak grip as Systema cultists do. It's just not going to happen. Reality invalidates the principles of Systema.
@buboetherat I don't know how to make links hot on here, but here's an introduction to reality: 56.com/u20/v_NDk5MTkzMjk.html 56.com/u44/v_NDk1ODQ2ODk.html
@Colimarche The weblinks don't work very well. I did a search on Kelly McCann, found his website, and there's a certain irony there, don't you think? ;) That aside, he's no more (or less) credible than Systema or Aikido. His approach is a westernized distillation of ju-jitsu.
@buboetherat The day you are faced with a real knife attack and you apply these "principles", you are getting sliced to the bone. You Systema guys just do not understand how fast a blade moves when propelled with intent, and how dangerous it is in every direction. You will never be able to "relax" fast enough to catch up with muscular contractions of a real knife attack.
@buboetherat Propaganda isn't always wide disseminated. Sometimes, the best propaganda is intended only for a select minority. I didn't say it was all propaganda; I used "or" in my statement. I believe that the Soviet footage toward the beginning of the clip is propaganda footage. The remainder is as I said: choreographed or against the indoctrinated. Why is there never a single, realistic, knife attack--or any attack--shown in any Systema video? That's rhetorical.
@Colimarche Ok, so you "believe" that the Soviet footage is propaganda. I disagree. Is your belief based just on that it's Soviet, or is there something more specific? Furthermore, if you knew more about Systema, you'd realize that it's much less choreographed than any other martial art to my knowledge. There are no real techniques, just principles.
good vid.this vid mostly demonstrates the kadochnikova systema which imo is more agressive and based on moments.this vid show how truly skilled general kadchnikov is and how he is the real deal like vlad not a "video marketor and thief" like starov.nice to see you took some footage from imo vlads best and some of the greatest instructions vids like knife fighting and throwing, knife defence (first version), holds releases and attacks and the russian fighting system continuesystema military style
this is some gay shit right here

Systema is the most efficient martial art. Even their punches are relaxed. Yet it is also damn effective.
