  • Hurt's accent is terrible. What Irish Mobster lives in the suburbs with henchmen? In Philly no less. And they went all the way to the midwest for revenge? A mess of a story.

  • @torr5962 How is it a mess of a story? viggo took his eye; if someone took out my friggin eye with barbed wire i'd chase his ass to africa. Do you know where evvery mobster lives in the world? and none of them live in the suburbs with henchmen?? that's what i thought. The story makes total sense and it is absolutely legitimate; he was going to be the next in line made man he has money so he lives it up. Next time try watching the entire movie and then give a longer explanation.

  • @quicklearner96 I watched it a bunch of times. I like parts of it-just not the mob part of it. Philly mob would never be chasing guys all over the country. They would draw too much attention to themselves. They wont even bother people in philly suburbs because of heat.

  • @torr5962 i get what your saying but it's not like he was bringing a lot of attention to himself they went to find him in the middle of nowhere where he lived. The only attention they brought to themselves was that of Joey's family and a simple sheriff. No one really took notice to them to the extent that they would be arrested or anything like that. I don't know you may be right about the suburbs part but like i said i don't see why risking a little attention would stop a man from revenge.

  • wooow, Hurt was absolutely amazing in this! He is so brilliant.

    Mortensen was amazing too.

  • Great performance ? tut tut tut. ... If u wanna see a great performance look up Michael Fassbender in hunger .. the opening monologue

  • William Hurt. Good actor, bad shooter.

  • What an A+ film.

  • William Hurt's best line: I love you wife. (Lost in Space)

  • broheim

  • William Hurt is a amazingly gifted actor. First heard of him in this movie, The Doctor, as well Dark City and Artificial Intelligence.

    Favorite Line:

"How do you fuck that up?

    HOW..DO YOU FUCK...THAT....UP?!

  • @fortminor85 wow ur cool

  • It is great, the thin brotherly love, but he can't let that get in the way of business, and he does not quite remember how dangerous Joey really is.

  • dont get me wrong... he's great... it was like, a solid performance too, just not THAT good

  • @brickbusterful I feel the same way. I think you and I would have a higher opinion of him if we got to see more of him in the movie. Or if he played a bigger role in the big picture. Example, Lecter was only in 15 minutes of Silence of the Lambs, but his actions had such an impact on the rest of the story that it felt like he was in the whole movie. If it was more of Richie and not so much Carl, maybe it would have been better

  • @40Pacino lectur mustv been in at least 19 minutes of silence of the lambs... i like could not believe any less.

  • @brickbusterful nah, just over 16 min.

  • @brickbusterful Totally agree, dude. Its a great performance without being forced or over the top BUT its not as great as most people make it out to be. I love William Hurt and this movie a lot though.

  • Hes good but Oscar worthy for role thats barely 10 mins long? Hmm...

  • @GavSalkeld that's why it's called SUPPORTING actor. Many performances in the supporting category have been that short or shorter. The whole point is quality not quantity.

  • @Tigerlily21 How was Hailee Steinfeld nominated for Best Supporting actress when she was in every single scene bar the last? Best Actress nom should have been the call, and won it she should have. I've gone all Yoda ...

  • No richie....all kids dont do that.

  • Incredible performance.

  • One of the only movies I've paid twice to see in the theater, full price. I loved this. When Joey pulls up to Richie's house, I felt genuine depression and anxiety as if I was in his shoes, thinking about my nasty past and unsure future. I was captivated.

  • his performance is the only part of the movie that wasn't extremely overrated

  • how do u fuck that up

  • "When mom brought you back from the hospital, I tried to strangle you in your crib! I guess all kids try to do that! Mom caught me and smack the daylights out of me!" Lol! One of best line I've ever heard in a movie!

  • damn william hurt. all your performances amaze me

  • @shin1ngfir3 Even Lost in Space?

  • it's like joey knows krav maga!

  • tacky american crap

  • I was a shoe-in...to take over when the boss croked...a SHOE-IN.

  • i like when he nails ol girl on the stairs that was hot

  • "What're ya gonna do, give 'im mouth to mouth?"

  • @destructodude fuck i was waiting for that line! and then it just cuts off.

  • Why are u admiring william hurt... when old Viggo there just did a badass

  • So many great lines, like "How do you fuck that up?"

  • you like that farm life? milkin' cows and shit?

  • William Hurt is a great actor

  • @92af great is an understatement, I'd say brilliant

  • Don't you just want to see a movie about these brothers in the old days?

  • @mphrdldn i agree . I want to a see a prequel about crazy joe , richie and even see Fogarty get his scar .

  • @mphrdldn thatd be a pretty epic movie

  • Beautifully decorated wood paneled office/library.

  • How do you fuck that up? HOW do you fuck that up?

  • Damn William got that performance down man thats exactly how people from Philadelphia act, short tempered and willing to shot anybody i should know im from Philly :)

  • The greatest film scene of all time...

Josh Olson and William Hurt are great geniuses

  • Who can stay awake for a William Hurt performance? He's the American Jeremy Irons.

  • @unclealand you fail.

  • Also this was the most retarded movie I've ever seen, It's like watching an ultra violent Walker Texas Ranger episode

  • I understand the gravity of the moment, the drama of facing a bitter brother for Joey, but... isn't William Hurt's face at 5:10 both funny and disturbing?

  • Williiam hurt couldn't bother with a philly accent?

  • Comment removed

  • I liked him in Dark City, but here, he really shines.

  • Bro -hymn always thought that was a southern Kiwi thing

  • perfect casting

  • i met William Hurt today after a watching him in a play called "a long journey into night". Probably the biggest prick iv ever met!

  • @TheDobbydobson

    Why??

  • @TheDobbydobson I knew it! He allways seemed like a real arrogant bastard. How was he a prick to you?

  • Loved this scene and tune in a lot to see it Wow.

  • just a great film.

  • Did he miss Joey on purpose when he was shooting or was it because he was a little drunk or was Joey too fast? I never really got how Joey escaped the bullets being only a few feet away...

  • I thought it was probably the worst performance William Hurt has ever given on screen. Typical over-the-top cartoonish villain.

  • @skinwalkerxxx haha my precious car toons

  • This film was complete shit except for William Hurt. Absolutely terrible acting by everyone else involved. Almost Troll 2 level.

  • @gingerbreadcorpses I hope that's just an exaggeration on your part. :)

  • THROAT PUNCH ZA!

  • HOW DO YOU FACK THAT UP!@

  • he did not get nominated

  • 7:19

  • See I watched this film and hated it - about 3 years back but now I watch clips it seems better. Myabe a rewatch is inorder.

  • @weirdcitykid Or maybe suicide?

  • @bannedagainfromutube

Your momma died from cancer and you are angry - but be happy like me. I personally, am glad the old witch is dead! Hopefully the old man will blow off too soon.

My regards to the rest of your inbred fam.

    Cheers.

    Wck

  • @weirdcitykid Goddamn that is some weak shit. Suicide is really looking like your only option. Do us all a favor. You won't be missed. Even by your whore of a mother, or cocksucker of a father. Suicide. It's your only option.

  • Hurt is shit in this film FACT

  • "I love you...wife"

  • Ritchie seems to have rehearsed the dialougue more than William Hurt did.

  • His accent had a lot of Philly in it but it lacked the hard pronunciation the letter "R".

  • He was so amazing in what very little time he had. He had me totally convinced that these two were actually brothers who shared a very long past of violence together.

  • Hhow do you fuck that up....How do you Fuck That Up lol

  • This film is crap.

  • "How do you fuck that up!" he says to another guy after shooting at Tom 5 times from 10-15 feet, missing each time. Ha!

  • @mastertanker001 "how do you fuck that up!" how did he have more bullets in his gun to shoot that guy! go back to 7.25 and notice he has no more bullets hahaha :-D

  • @SchwarzerMannn you dont know what your talking about. he still had bullets.

  • @Doderhultarn89 my bad..just that i thought a "click" sound at 7:25 means that there are no more bullets in a gun. maybe his gun just jammed for a few seconds. i dont know. but ill trust your judgment

  • @SchwarzerMannn No, 7:25 was the sound of a bullet hitting the wooden door.

  • @SchwarzerMannn And a emty gunshell hits the flor at just about the same time to.

  • thats cause you haven't seen kiss of the spider woman...

  • I thought his performance was a little over the top to be honest...

  • The William Hurt performance seems strongly reminiscent of Richard "the Iceman" Kuklinski - charming, loquacious, stone cold killer.

  • @belisariusorb

Even in terms of looks, a little bit...interesting.

  • @belisariusorb "stone cold" maybe but not much of a killer ...

  • do you like being married?

    what?

    do you like being married?

    lol

  • its just a made up accent I think. he lives in philly but its implied he could be from boston. thats why its so good. he CREATES a character. its whatever he wanted to make him to be. thats why this is great acting. 10 minutes or not, this is incredible. he's menacing but funny, when he says, "That's disgusting" its so hilarious, I always laugh at that. whether its christopher walken in pulp fiction or whatever, one good scene is all it takes to help make a movie

  • Unbelievable. Just eight minutes... and Hurt already had a truckload of nominations waiting for him after this.

  • William Hurt is awesome. Viggo Mortensen is also awesome. They'd both be in my ideal movie. Hurt would probably be the main character.

  • How do you fuck that up? How do you fuck THAT up?!

  • What was the deal with the hug scene lasting a little bit too long. I know their brothers who haven't seen each other in 20 years, but yeah. I remember saying "get a room" in the theater. The rest of the scene was the best dialogue in the whole movie

  • @a50745 , that is right? what was the deal? why are men always sooooo afraid of showing their feelings for other men? and so watching it on film must be terrible, right? get real!!!!!

  • @eugenioluis67 I am real, when have you ever seen two straight grown men hug like that? :P I mean if the two were gay it woulda made more since. Just saying..

  • @eugenioluis67 he's right, I've never had a greeting like that with any of my bros, and I've never seen it in real life either, sooo yeah that was kind of weird, not to mention they are supposed to be mobsters and mobsters aren't really big on showing feelings.... unless it's anger

  • @temperex You have a point and you do not. I am gay and I have a younger brother whom I have never and would never greet like that. I mean, we hug and kiss on the cheeks like most Mediterranean people do but you are right! Never as intensely or for so long as in this scene. Having said that, I think it is rather sweet to think that yes, a mobster (think about Tony Soprano for instance) can be a lot more than the caricature films usually show. They can be real bastards but can also love.

  • their brothers man

  • @a50745 maybe you should ask yourself why are you so uncomfortable with that.

  • @theBeorn asking a question counts as being uncomfortable? I've never seen anyone else who were greet like that which is why I asked. Gay people, maybe. Brothers, no. Simple question. Maybe you should ask yourself why you assume things about others? :)

  • @a50745 you didn't ask a question, you said, among other things "(..) I remember saying "get a room" in the theater..."

i think my comment was not out of line. i wasn't uncomfortable with the scene, they're family, he thought the brother was dead, and he's an evil mofo. i was definitely not thinking (not even really thought bout that until i read your comment) abuot hurt hitting on mortensen.

anyway, different points of view, etc. No worries mate, at least you like seeing awesome films.

  • @theBeorn Yeah it is as a joke, but was asking here 'what was this about'. I guess that's how they greeted each other growing up lol. It is a badass movie, wish more had fight scenes like the ones here.

  • It's creepy, knowing what Richie is really up to, even as he hugs his brother.

  • Love this scene. I keep logging on!

  • At first I thought this Richie character in the movie he plays as was that Jesse James guy (Sandra Bullock's husband) until I found he wasn't an actor. It kind of looks a bit like him.

  • Great movie not overrated but underrated!!!

  • This movie is overated but I loved william hurt's performance in it

  • i disagree i think the movie deserved the recognition it got cuz i thought the movie was amazing. Definatley one of the best movies of the decade.

  • How this is rated so highly is beyond me

  • William Hurt is just pure class. This is too good a movie! I love his line about pigs.

  • "I guess kids do that.." ahahah he just made strangeling babies funny

  • There have been some Best Supporting Actress winners with short scenes. Hermione Baddeley in "Room at the Top". Beatrice Straight in "Network".

  • William Hurt took Philadelphia-speak lessons. He has the general tone down but a few are missing. I wonder what neighborhood they started out in? Grey's Ferry back in the day? Devil's Pocket?

  • William Hurt was good but... Jake Gyllenhaal did a greater job, I think. I remember when Judi Dench won Best Supporting Actress for SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. It was just... ridiculous! Her role as a 5-minute-appereance-Queen was absolutely nothing special. In this case, Hurt was something, he was excellente, I just believe Gyllenhaal was better.

  • @AlbinusMakedonion Every so often, awards are given for a body of work that culminates in a scene or two that is worthy of notice, at least and the award is a form of "reparation" if you will. I can't recall Dame Judi Dench's performance in particular, but I am glad she won for something. Thelma Ritter always got robbed, I thought.

  • Viggo Mortenson and William Hurt in same scene???

That alone should have earned the film BEST PICTURE lol.

  • @mhaze210 in an era with shitty pansy ass actors, these guys are on par with Van Cleef and Eastwood here

  • such a great film.ed harris,viggo and john hurt-what a cast

  • Who were the other nominees?

  • George Clooney (Syriana), Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokebak Mountain), Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man) and Matt Dillon (Crash). Clooney won.

  • Ehm, how could Clooney win when William Hurt won?

  • William Hurt won in 1985 for Kiss of Spider Woman and Clooney was the best supporting actor in 2005 for Syriana.

  • How could Clooney even be nominated?

  • By usually playing the same bobble-headed, smarmy-smiling character in every movie he's been in.

Syriana was an exception, though. He was good in that movie. And the movie was pretty good, too.

  • it was good, but how can u get an oscar for a 10 minute role? lol

  • what if the role is really really good?

  • By being really, really good.

  • Its amazing...nominated for the academy award with such a short time on scene....

William Hurt is a quality actor (not a quantity one).

  • @BiggCojones 7:06 and 7:43...

But the best is precisely afterwards: "Fucking leave this and let's go kil that little fuck!!!"

  • 7 minutes and to achieve a performance like that. Amazing !!

  • I actruly relly liekd this movie. It was a bit short and the young girl wasn't to great. But hey she's only a little girl i guess.

  • Hurt deserved the Oscar!

  • i agree !!!

  • Cause it was good

  • a good performance but to short of acting for an oscar nod.. but well deseverd if that

  • Geez William Hurt was good, the academy through from previous times does not like to give oscars to short roles... this is a good example but the best example is Brad Dourif in One flew over the cuckos nest

  • I like this performance but I have to admit, you have to have seen at least a few movies with William Hurt to appreciate this role.

  • Such a great performance in such a little amount of screen time. He deserved that "Best Supporting Actor" nomination.

  • This was a terrific performance. The angst between the two was the best part of the movie.

  • Jim Sheridan is about to direct a movie adaption of the novel "Balck Mass" on James "Whitey" Bulger.

The cast isn't known yet, but, William Hurt, with this performance, should be given a try.

    He also looks like Bulger!

  • viggo mortensen is such a sick head in this film

  • Honestly i like viggo. He has great petential. i throught he was great in Eastern Promises. but he wasnt oscar worthy in this movie. but i can understand why you think he is. Hurt was great. but he wasnt that amazing neither

  • Man William Hurt was so fucking hot in his heyday...

  • i agree with teaparty111, dat hes not good at accents coz dat aint even close to a philly accent but he is a great actor

  • I thought his accent was great. His character is drunk, so it's like he's keeping the accent, but slurs it around a bit. Either way, this is great theatrical acting.

  • dats true his character is drunk, ive never thought about it like dat, still i just thought his accent was off but theres no denying this was a great performance and he is a great actor

  • Now--the JOEY character---VIGO--that is a great actor. He played a Russian mobster in another movie and deserved an Oscar. Now HE is a great actor--HURT is banality at his best. That's my opinin and if YOU disagree that is yours. You keep yours and I'll definately keep mine.

  • Actually Viggo is just a very good actor, while Hurt proved his greatness in both this film, and in his performances during the 80's. Viggo is becoming a great actor, and he might be learning to wear his heart on his sleave. William Hurt is simply one of the best actors to ever grace the screen.

  • Viggo is a real actor--you will see him increase in years as Hurt decreases. Viggo M. is an A movie actor. He is going places and has tremendous talent. Hurt is banality at its best. THIS IS MY OPINION. If you have another--good for you.

  • Viggo is a very good actor, but not a great one. He still has much to learn about method acting, and his performance in "The Road" might be a career define performance for him. Hurt has been a great actor for over 25 years, and his acting in this film is outstanding. Which is why he got an oscar nod. What Hurt does in this film, is exactly what Marlon Brando, and Deniro use to do.

And I know you have an opinion, but your opinion is stupid.

  • And how is Hurt decreasing?? He gave another great performance in "Into the Wild."

  • What greatness, he only had a couple of lines. Viggo was great in this. John Hurt is a great actor but this movie doesn't represent that. Sorry!

  • Viggo wasn't that great, he was emotionally cold. Hurt channeled alot of emotional depth in this scene, he had great dramatic range, timing, and delivery. It is easily one of the top 10, or top 20 best performances of this decade. He does more in 10 minutes, then what most actors could do in a three hour film.

  • Is William HUrt, John Hurt is another actor.

  • how do they fuck that up?

  • His part not that big,but his performance is so memorable!it's one of those performances that I just cant forget.

  • It's true! i love this actor, one of the great actors of his generation

  • He did better performance in "The Kiss Of The Spider Woman"

  • he sounds exactly like Elliot Gould in this.

  • Haha, "Milkin' Cows N Shit". Amazing.

  • Loved him in this film

He was so funny and I'm so glad he got nominated, though it's still a shame he didn't win

  • ad hominum, ad nausium, is dat latin?

  • good actor or not, either way his accent sure as hell isnt a philly one, im from philly, i would know

  • Hurt is world class! He and Viggo are great in this scene. Whether leading or character, Hurt is one of our great actors!

  • amen!

  • He must have friends in the academy because William Hurt is the same shit over and over again. He is not good at accents or anything other than bieing the same crap over ad nausium. I don't care to see him in acting--get some new talented people or older talented folks-----

  • You're entitled to your opinion, but, on this occasion, might I suggest that you ram it up your ignorant, ill-informed rimhole?

William Hurt has evolved from one of Hollywood's most interesting leading men into one of it's most talented character actors. The reason a fuckstick like you is oblivious to this is because he embues his performances with an almost subliminal subtlety. Each characterizaton is marked with distinctly unique nuances.

And learn to spell, you fucking cunthook.
