Elephants or humans, locked up in a small space, for decades, & both neurosis & psychosis will develop. All you could do is pace back & forth, back & forth for years & decades. Some bulls in the while stay alone, for some time, because they PREFER it that way: they get to roam around, FREELY, hundreds of sq. miles; & when females are in heat, they can fight their way there & mate & pass on their genes. No such things are possible in human zoos, typically 50 x 80 or so sq.ft. cages. Nightmares...

Billy is displaying behavior that means he is bored, depressed, and is not living in a good place. Bull elephants usually live alone or with one or two other bull elephants in the wild, although the dominant, high-ranking males will live alone. However, the bulls do keep in contact with the female herds and other males, using infrasonic communication that the human ear is not able to hear.

Poor Billy. Email and write to the L.A. city council and to your congressmen urging them to send him to a sanctuary (like PAWS) where he will have hundreds of acres to roam. Tell them that there are hundreds of disturbing videos that show poor Billy doing nothing all day but neurotically bobbing his head and swaying his body. Billy is losing his mind at the L.A. Zoo. There is still hope for him to have a decent life if he goes to PAWS Sanctuary. He is only 20 years old now.

This is an Asian elephant, Asian cows do not have tusks. Only half of Asian bulls have tusks. Asian elephants are solitary, even in the wild. The herd is ruled by a dominant female and adult males are only allowed into the herd when it is mating time. Some of you might want to reserach some things before you post something that shows your lack of knowledge.

The lesser of two evils is the 'safari park'. At least they allow the animals more freedom than Zoos which are essentially PRISONS for animals.

This is an Indian or "Asian" elephant and if you notice the dark patch on the side of his head this is a secretion that occurs in male elephants twice a year when they go into a state called "musth." The secretions are released when the animal is flooded with testosterone. At these times male elephants are two things: horny and irritable. This poor guy was obviously masturbating with a tire as an accessory. Best to stay out of his way while he's getting his rocks off.

Billy the Elephant has been in full musth for a long time. He has no other Elephants to be with in LA's nasty zoo.
