  • Ok thanks you for the come back. The truck won't start any more I'm gonna check the volts on the FICM and it's bad I'll send it in. Maybe have it upgraded to 58v. Thank you for the helpfull information you provide for use. It has been a hard year for me and your videos are sure gonna help me save a lot of money doing it buy myself and will help me do a lot of preventing maintnance. Thanks again and god bless you your family and your workers

  • I have a 2005 f350 dually. My truck starts rough in a cold day and blows a lot of white smoke. It sounds like it misses. When the truck is plugged it it helps it on the start. When the truck is all warmed up and take it for a drive all of a sudden misses. I have lost power on it too. I dont burn oil at all. In a hot summer day my truck starts a little rough too. A mechanic told me once that I have to send the computer on top of the motor in and have it reprogram. What do u think I should do

  • @imoraless I think you have either a FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module) issue or a bad injector or two. You just need to have a diagnostic tool hooked up to find out.

  • @powerstorkehelp my 2001 7.3 is throwing a code p0638 I was told it could be about 10 different things can you make a recommendation please?

  • @powerstrokehelp No it actually is a little full. lol And I forgot to mention that its a 6L

  • @kyfordfan Being over full will cause this issue, but it has to be a bunch over. We made a mistake and put 19q in a truck that we had just installed a remanufactured engine and thought that it was a problem with the engine. Every body was all over it for two days, Customer raising hell needing the truck. Scott comes out from the office and checks the oil thinking it is a different truck. We drained some oil out and it ran perfect.

  • what if you have a small amount of blue smoke on startup?

  • @kyfordfan I wouldn't sweat it unless the engine is consuming oil. Do you have to add oil between oil changes.

  • does your building have a sign out side

  • @Wi11DuBeast Yep if you get lost call 770-931-4070. If you are in the cul de sac with all the burnout marks you know you are close.

  • I was wondering if you could help me I have a 2001 f250 and want to do my exhaust I know I want a 4" downpipe and would like to do 4" back to a 5" muffler back and also stainless any suggestions on what is best or what I should do thank you

  • My 05( with ARP studs and EGR delete) was starting terribly there for awhile. I'm up in Oregon so it gets pretty cold but sometimes even leaving it for 5 hours or so I would come back and start it and it was bellowing smoke and sounding like nails in a dryer or something. I switched from Delco to Ams oil 3000 HD cause some guy mentioned it to me. It is way better. Would this have soemthing to do with the spool valves in the injector on the 6.0?

  • @ORYGUN11x A FICM with the higher voltage will help alot with cold start.

  • @powerstrokehelp thanks a ton man! I'll get on it asap and see what changes. Also, at idle, there is a high oitch noise. Like like a squealing noise or anything, its just like a high pitch rattle if that. I looked up under it and it sounds like its coming from a belt somewhere towards the back of the engine. When I first start it up it doesnt make it until after about 5 minutes after its been running or after I've been driving it. Only does it at idle. Sound like anything you know of? Also, the

  • @DuckAndDodge05 I'd really have to hear it in person or you can send me a youtube vid link.

  • Started up my 7.3 this morning, it was 22 degrees last night, had just a hint of blue not much at all at initial start it goes away after a minute or two is that normal?

  • @builtfordtuff95 I wouldn't sweat it but plugging in the block heater will help.

  • When my truck finally cranks during a cold start, it billows out a decnt cloud of white smoke and thats it, then it doesnt smoke at all. I live in macon Ga so it doesnt get that cold down here. But also, I need help. One, is my fuel guage goes up and down when accelerating and braking. When I accel, it goes up, when I brake it drops really low, any ideas? And also, if I give the truck a alot of throttle, for a while after its like its jumpy on acceleration, even if I barely get on the throttle.

  • @DuckAndDodge05 Probably need a fuel sending unit to fix that first problem. Second you need to look at my vid titled." 6.0 fuel pressure". These concepts apply to all PSDs. If you have a 99-2003 PSD you may need to drop the fuel tank and clean the screens.

  • @powerstrokehelp Hey Bill, Got a question. Just recently bought a 05 6.0. Truck is in great condition and runs great. Previous owner furnished all paperwork of servicing done by ford. New injectors at 80k, currently 120k. it recently got cold here in, and at home I keep it plugged in, but at work I dont have access. I went to start it, been sitting for 14 hours, 20 degree weather, and it just kept on cranking. Finally started, runs great, no skip, no smoke? What could be the problem?

  • @jaredd420 You may need to check the FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module) voltage. It is the silver box on top of the driver's valve cover. Unfortunately you have to have Ford diag equipment to do it easily. There may be some ideas on how to check it manually on a forum.

  • Hey I'm looking to buy an older (94-97ish) powerstroke and most of the trucks in my price range are anywhere from 200k to 250k miles on them. It will probably be an automatic. Are there any major things I should look out for on these trucks? And does the cab need to be removed to service the truck like the newer ones? Thanks for your time!

  • @KLoughreyProductions Biggest thing on the older PSDs is they leak. They leak fuel, they leak oil especially when it is cold. They make alot less power than the later intercooled trucks. The mechanical fuel pump is a real pain to change. The best upgrade is a regulated return fuel system and electric fuel pump from Elite Diesel Engineering. The power gains and throttle response is huge.

  • here's an idea for an upcoming video. after bullet proofing, what mods would you do to a 6.0 and what results would you expect (IE a 4.5" exhaust and headers?) and in what order for cost and longevity? (no reason to spend money on a turbo first)

  • CAN YOU ADD A HIGH IDLE SWITCH INSTALL VIDEO FOR US DIESEL FANS

THANKS - LOVE THIS SITE VERY HELPFULL

  • wait to start light is a dummy light, just because it turns off doesnt mean the relay shuts off, a good relay should stay heating up those glow plugs for up to two minutes...

  • wait to start light is a dummy light, just because it turns off doesnt mean the relay shuts off, a good relay should stay heating up those glow plugs for up to two minutes...

  • What happen whit spot's hood?

  • @ssueros Water got past the louvers and shorted out my wiring harness so I went back the flat hood.

  • what is wrong with plugging the truck in during the winter?

  • @powerstrokehelp I forgot to mention that my ford was a 4WD. Would these same problems exist?

  • @powerbookG4user1024 Yes if the ball joints are loose.

  • @powerstrokehelp hello, i was watching your high performance fuel mods for 7.3. i was wondering how much time does it take to complete the whole kit? Thankyou, keep up the good work, first place i come to when i need powerstroke stuff

  • @powerstrokehelp hello, i have two questions. 1. How long does it take to do the high performance fuel mods to a 97 powerstroke as seen in your video. because i was planning on doing this on a saturday and was wondering if i could get it done in one day starting at like 10:30 ish. 2. When i start my 7.3 cold like after sitting at school eight hours on a slightly above freezing day, he just shits white smoke. But, if it sits over night and i plug it in, hardly smokes. Thanks for videos.

  • I can't seem to find my answer any where on the internet, but I have a 94 F250. It's not a diesel, but a 7.5L gas, what would cause the front tires to bow inwards when you reverse the truck? It only does this when you back it up, could it be the ball joints needing replacing? any help would be appreciated.

  • @powerbookG4user1024 All two wheel drive trucks do this due to the alignment being tow in just a little. It can be worse depending on the ball joints and alignment. If you are experiencing excessive tire wear on the inner part of the front tires you probably need ball joints.

  • Is the 6.7 Ford better than the 6.0 Ford (2006 Ford), I'm still not sure about my 06 ford, I am pleasantly surprised by how fast this truck can go, took about 9 seconds for 0-60 but that's unoffical timing, the dually spund the tires so I think it would be faster if I power braked it.

  • Wouldn't you recommend a 5w-40?

  • @TheDiamondDiesel It never gets cold enough down here to need it but up North it is a good idea.

  • turned out that the glow plug relay on my '03 6.0l was good, had 6 0f 8 injectors bad...

  • @dragracer both 6.0 and 7.3 will use their respective systems to block the exhaust and idle up. This keeps the exhaust heat in the engine and warms it up quicker. As soon as you touch the brake or throttle they will go back to correct idle.

  • Hey Bill, I've got a early 99 7.3 and on cold days when the the truck idles up in warm up mode it doesn't stay at a constant RPM it fluctuates and while it does that the sound out of the exhaust is like a shunk shunk sound every few seconds. And once driving this will continue to happen until the truck is warmed up. Is this a "design feature" or something that needs attention.

  • @PaxAmericanaInst That is the exhaust back pressure valve opening and closing. It is that flap that is on the outlet of the turbo. It is designed to help the engine warm up quicker. Is your truck warming up to operating temp like a faulty thermostat? These can and do malfunction but if the truck is not warming up correctly it will do what you are describing.

  • MAN! thanks for the help videos!!! changed my glow plug relay and now it starts on first crank. Before it took like 20 minutes and clouds of smoke.

  • Love your videos Bill, really appreciate all the effort you put in to help us out. As a 6.4 owner I hope to see more content coming our way now that the trucks are getting on 4+ years old. Thanks again.

  • Bill, how much to flush a system anti freeze with distelled water? I know you said that water is important to use.

  • Hey, bill. My truck runs fairly well, but on the first start up of the morning after about 10-15 seconds the idle will shoot up between 300-500 rpm then settle back down to proper idle right away. Then when I drive it and I'm at a stop it seems like the idle will be about a 100 rpm higher then usual. It's just enough where I have to step a little harder on the brake to keep from moving forward. Any help would be great. F-250, 4WD, build date 5-99, 7.3, auto.

  • @crruzzzer1 It just the PCM trying to heat up the truck. A tow tune from Jody at dp-tuner.com would fix that.

  • Another great video by our Ga. Boy!

  • hey tech cuestion !!! i replace my 4 of the eight glow plugs and the rest still run ! but i turn the swicht on my baterie get dry and dies !! ????? what´s wrong !!??

  • @LEONCITA1528 You have a dead short somewhere in the system. You need a good auto electrical guy to find it.

  • Hi Bill, I have a 2005 f350 6.0. i took the egr valve off to see inside the intake and it looks to be shiny and damp inside. my question is that when i start the truck in -5 in canada it only smokes a cloud of white smoke right away, then does not smoke any smoke at all. it also does not use any coolant as i haven't noticed any missing. Now could that be because the egr cooler got replaced and the mechanic forgot or didn't clean out the intake or is my egr cooler still plugged?

  • @fordpowerstroke2012 Soot can look shiny and wet inside the egr hole on the intake. Do you idle the truck alot?

  • @powerstrokehelp In summer i idle it for about 2 min before i drive it around just to let it warm up dunno if i have to or not first diesel ever so im trying to be careful, but in winter it will be idled for 10 min each cold start to let it warm up as the temp here can get to -35 and colder so i guess i idle it a fair bit. If i take it to some mech can they run a diagnostic to make sure its not clogged or is the only way to check to take the cooler out?

  • yet another good vid.

  • I get a blue smoke when I start mine.

  • @28660jay Blue black smoke is oil. Valve guide seals may be getting tired, not a big deal but an indicator that there is some wear on the motor.

  • @powerstrokehelp I have a Ford Premium warranty. Would they cover something like that?

  • @28660jay Maybe, you need to make sure you articulate the complaint clearly to the service adviser when you drop it off. Just complaining gets no where.

  • @powerstrokehelp Ok, I have a couple other things that they need to fix that I know are covered. My coolant temp wont rise above 173 degrees. I suspect a bad t/stat. That is one of them.

  • @28660jay Thats huge. If the engine does not warm up correctly then it will stay in warm up mode and kill fuel economy.

  • @powerstrokehelp Wow. I did not know that. I will have to take it in this week then. If the Valve guide seals continue to leak, what are the long term effects on the motor? I literally just took delivery of this truck on tuesday. 06 f-350 w/62,230 miles. I need it to last a long time

  • @28660jay No long term effects just minor oil consumption.

  • Hey Bill. 6.0 111000, bulletproofed. Is it normal to see thick clouds of white smoke when its -10 like it already is up here in Alaska? I was hoping it was just steam, but now you got me worried since i have a very fast approaching drive through Canada back home to Texas..

  • @kevo6987 at -10F you need to be plugging in the block heater. That white is unburnt fuel because the engine if too cold to burn it correctly.

  • Thanks for all of the videos! I have a 97 F450 (167k). If it's below 50 degrees or parked for 2 days, it won't start without being plugged in... if not warmed up, it idles very rough, won't rev up or climb a hill til it has ran at least 10 minutes or longer. I kinda figured from watching your other videos that it was only a matter of time before I'm taking out a loan for injectors. normal smoke like yours, good batteries and starter. Thanks again

  • @bran20man Id really need to do the Injector analysis on it but it sounds as though it may be time for some injectors and a set of glow plugs while you are in there.

  • @bran20man did you have your glow plug relay checked?i just had mine test and changed out for 95.00[part and labor]cheaper than 4 to 8 hundred bucks for injector job.[97 f250 250k]

  • Bill,

Great vid, I wish I knew the stuff you've forgotten about Power Strokes.

But I take issue with one thing you said about the heater. You said you need a 12 gauge cord. While it's always better to have a heavier cord than necessary, 14 & 16 gauge cords will work depending on length, and wattage of the heater.

My 02' has a 1,000 watt heater, which draws 9 amps. On a 50'-16 gauge cord, it only looses 5 volts.

But I realize you have to give advice that covers everyone, even the dummies.

  • @txgp17 Believe me the things I forget I am always reminded of at some point. Usually pulling my hair on a truck thinking to myself that I had been at this point before and then some piece of software will come back from deep in my mind. The hard thing is not only remembering what DID work but also what DIDN'T work. But thanks for the vote of confidence.

  • totally unrelated but what have you found is the best solvent or whatnot to use to flush a system to remove the milkshake after oil cooler failure has occurred?

  • @mustangman05 It takes a bunch of flushing to get all that goo out. We start with a mild solution of purple power to get the heavy stuff and then after 3 flush cycles of that flush with Dawn. But you will still have a line of the goo in the bottle until you remove the bottle and clean it in a parts washer. It is very important to go run the truck HARD during each flush to really heat it up. Just idling will not get the coolant hot enough the emulsify the oil.

  • hey how many miles does ole' spot have on her?

  • @yz250raceer I do oil changes at 5,000 miles on the even and half 10,000s (it is easier to remember) and we just did the 835,000 mile oil service.

  • Love these videos!

  • What rims do you have on Spot? They look like one of the stock rim choices on the newer trucks (06-08ish).

  • @maddog8911capt Yep 07 alloy 17" with WheelAdapers 2" spacers.

  • You bring up some good points.

Something I thought I'd through out there is that white "smoke" seen on a cold day can also be steam from built up condensation in the exhaust and have nothing to do with your fuel mixture. All too often, many folks mistake the white steam for smoke which infact, is simply just condensation in the exhaust being heated off.

    Austen

  • @76280zguy That is correct for warm weather, but less true in the cold.

  • so...28F what happens at -40F here in canada...gm 6.5 still starts lots of smoke but id like to see this in that cold weather

  • What about hot start issues? I have a crazy Lope when I plug in the block heater and the ambient temp is below 10F. And when the oil is over 100F, RPM drops to 500 for 3 seconds after start up. IPR is fine so It's not that.

  • @32wiebe Id have to see it to diag it but it sounds like a possible injector anomaly that is causing the PCM to "hunt" for the idle.

  • black smoke ='s oil?

  • @frodo70444 Yes at start up blue-black smoke is oil. Rolling coal in a performance tuned truck is just excess fuel.

  • @powerstrokehelp i knew blue was oil in gas burners but i don't know squat about a diesel so thats why i asked

  • that's a bad bitch...

  • Here in Texas it hasnt got too cold just yet. But i havae noticed that when i start my '05 350 up it sounds like it stuters for a min or so and will shake. Then after i let it run for a min, it will smoothout and sound normal. If I dont let it warm up for a good 10 min or so it has significant power loss and the shifts are way late and hard. Is this something I need to take the truck in to have looked at?

  • @prclaun You have an injector or two on the way out. It will get worse. It wont hurt it as long as you dont mind waiting a few minutes until she sorts herself out.

  • @powerstrokehelp Thanks. I have it under warranty with Ford. is there a way I can have them test the injectors with out tearing the engine up, or do i need to wait till it gets really bad before ford will do any warranty work on it?

  • @prclaun Yes but you have to complain that it wont start easily and has no power cold. The wait for a good cold snap to take it to them so the tech can diag correctly.

  • @prclaun This happened to me this past summer on my 07 at 97,000 miles. 2 injectors were bad, and thankfully Ford covered it. Made a world of difference once they were replaced.

  • @prclaun This happened to me this past summer on my 07 at 97,000 miles. 2 injectors were bad, and thankfully Ford covered it with no issues. Made a world of difference once they were replaced. To back up what Bill is saying, make sure they let the truck sit overnight so they can test your injectors cold, as the Ford techs couldn't detect any problems with my injectors when the truck was warmed up.

  • We had this a cold start prob the other day it got down to 31 but it started

  • where did your propane and nitrous systems go?????

  • @fatmikey00032000 I got tired of building transmissions and fixing bent valves and pushrods, so we went back to a milder set up.

  • i thought that black smoke is over fuel

  • @9312valve It is when under acceleration but not at start up.

  • Thanks Bill, cleared up a lot of misconception about smoke colour and common causes for hard coldstarts.

  • My wait to start light never comes on

  • @makaboarder Either the light is burnt our OR your glow plug relay is no good.

  • would the oil being to thick cause it to start harder?

  • @CumminsTwinTurbo Yes because the high pressure oil will thicken and keep the injectors from firing correctly.

  • uhh... black smoke isn't oil

  • @drunkondiesel Yes at start up with stock injectors.

  • i got a dozen ford diesels at work ontario canada at 30 below u got to plug in im a mechanic and the 6 ltr is realy a challenge with all the idling the guys do the guys at the shop enjoyed your vids thanx a lot

  • I feel better already.

  • we got a big ol international 6cyl that must have terrible injectors. it starts up on 3 cylinders and runs like that for 5-10 mins then it finally picks up the rest. during the first few mins it will not rev at all or does not rev much. if you holkd the pedal on the floor it picks up speed real slowly then the last 3 cyl finally come to life. if the block heater isn't plugged in it does not start at all. but the injectors for that thing are like 3 grand :S

  • I thought Spot died? Engine grenaded.

  • @BuhlzI It was running again three days later.

  • @powerstrokehelp Haha!!!

  • @powerstrokehelp weird do tell us what happened?

  • @1curt12 Go to the You Tube search bar above and type in "Spot the shop truck" there is a whole vid devoted to it.

  • what about blue smoke when you start it cold?
