Nice fish boys. What time of year was this? I was up cairns way in May, spent a whole day chucking lures and sliders round Arlington, Had 6-7 bigg fish follow the lures right to the boat but never got a hit. They bite better in the Warmer months?
Giant trevally can be funny things, depends what mood there in, When they're fired up they'll smash anything that moves, and other times, they'll have a look, but won't touch it, seen it alot, but that's fishing and that's what keeps you coming back for more. Giant trevally are fairly residential and around all year,
The reel is a Penn Spinfisher, good basic reel to start with for Giant trevally, but better quality reels around. Not sure on the Rod, Look at Shimano gear, good quality brand,
You can eat trevally and Giant trevally, but we're spoilt with great reef fish and alot better eating. GT's are great sport and alot of fun, and too good to catch once, so prefer to catch again,
we're based out of Mackay, Queensland, Australia. This was out on the Great Barrier Reef, at Trogibee reef, 150 kilometres or so offshore, and some great reef fishing, Giant trevally and Spanish Mackerel as well,
We fish the Reefs off Mackay, and some Great Giant Trevally action at times, and plenty of excellant reef fishing as well. Perfect day, nice and dead calm in behind the reef, sheltered and protected from the ocean swell,
I like to use a double in the braid, either Spiderhitch or Bimini twist, then an albright with the double onto the mono leader. Usually run about 100 - 150 lb Mono leader for Giant Trevally, about a metre or more, but not too long that you cast through your guides, will weaken and undo the knots with repeated casts.
@Reefari have u ever used a wire leader? i do cause u never know whats goin to hit your lure big wahoo or tuna.i lost a huge GT.using a mono leader got in some rocks..
This one was on a three day trip out to Trogibee Reef, out past Kindemar Reef, off Mackay, some great Fish, including several Giant Trevally and a Monster spanish mackerel, About 75 nautical miles out.
Can Do, Trolling poppers with lures is a great way when fishing new ground or reef edges, and can help in finding where the Giant trevally are holding, recommend running the poppers down the side closest to the reef or structures, as Giant trevally will hold in nice and close,
Works at times for Giant trevally, will get cod and coral trout more on your deep diving lures. Best bet is to work the reef edges with poppers, working it off the shallows into the deep and you will get more Cod and Coral trout on the edge as it drops off into deeper water, do this drifting or motoring along slowly, Good fun and a great way to work a fair bit of country
Good Video, but camera wasn't the best,
Cheers Greg

On our mackerel lures we run wire, but with poppers for Giant Trevally, 100lb mono is usually enough
