If you want to learn how to break out of the box, this is not the video for you... That being said, he's a talented player. I'm not all that impressed by fast pentatonic licks so I'm going to check out more vids to see if he can play with feeling.
@lungduck Philip has two solo albums out, almost three now (any day release in the US with his latest) Innerevolution, Peace Machine, and The Philip Sayce Group from 2000 or so. Peace Machine is a must have album for any blues/rock guitarists. Unbelievable tone and songwriting IMHO>
@popomczowzow..... Well said. I like it when guys can use the speed stuff at the right time in the solo. But not the whole solo. It could just be this solo video though for why he's playing speed stuff so much. I've heard some songs of his in which he does a pretty good job at using the speed licks with taste.
philip, you're great. one of my favorite modern musicians, but slow down man haha
fast playing like many other great things in life is much better when used in moderation. I don't mind it but I don't wanna hear just speediness. bb king and david gilmour are the prime examples playing slow and steady and still pouring their hearts out
guitar is not a sport, guitar is not acrobatics. it's not about how fast you play, it's about how well
everyones like slow down and that, if u watch his solo's he does live in sons with melissa etheridge and in his own songs they are actually perfect, i think him and joe bonamassa are the future of blues, fuck john mayor
those last three words in your comment made my day man! i have always hated john fuckin mayer, he brings nothing new! these guys like joe bonamassa, Sayce and derek trucks are definatley the way for the future...guys like philip keep me playin blues
John is a good song writer and singer, you can't deny him that. I think he uses a guitar to add something, which is never a bad thing. I do prefer guitar 'fronted' blues/rock like Mr. Sayce though ;-)
Well ithink he meant "Fuck John Mayer" because of the whole new "Backstreet boy/let's betray the blues for pop crap" deal that mayer is doing now. Just my opinion.
@shanghaiboy303 I agree with you. John Mayer is a rly good guitarist but the problem is all his shit that he plays is poppy and aimed at 15 yr old girls. I can't for the life of me find tabs of phil's stuff so i've resorted to playing his stuff at 30% speed to catch the notes haha.
@shanghaiboy303 john mayer brought blues into mainstream, something bonamassa and sayce could never have accomplished. they can certainly play though.
@KBinning Yeah, I'm cool with that. I wasn't trying to start a war by any means. It's just that back in 'the mid '80's, I was playing in a blues band and, although we got plenty of gigs (by doing mostly Top 40), we'd always sneak a blues tune or two into each set. This would infuriate the club owners, who berate us to no end.
Then along came Stevie Ray and "Pride and Joy". My, my, how things did change after that :-)
Don't get me wrong, I love this guy, he's an amazing player with a million pounds of soul. But slow down! Speedy playing is cool once in a while, but jesus, take it slow!
He has guts and intensity. He does what he does, well. I would rather hear him play slow though. Great tone, nothing new but balls to the wall. I respect that. You can't knock'em.
Rocknroll man on the other hand doesn't have much to say at all when it comes to putiin it down. Sorry lil brother. Gotta walk the walk first.

Wow amsterjam66, you know so much! I wonder why we don't see your video clips out here with all your "original ideas". Probably because you haven't had any, or your original material blows... Music has 12 notes, and is not a personal language, it's sharing the musical words that everyone uses in the order you see fit, just like this written language does. It's not "copycat elements", it the inspiration. Franz Listz didn't copy Paganini, he was inspired. Grow up and get a clue. The only idiot=u
lose the sombrero- the SR Yawn affectation is ridiculous - You remind of the 3 eyes.. (I) first I is the Inovator (that would be Jimi ( in case you did not know) Second I is the immitator ( that would be Steve RAY Sombrero ( in case you did not know) Third I is the Idiot- That would be you? wide ears and wide eyse- that should be your goal- not some third rate late immitation idiot.
Not saying I like this guy better than hendrix or SRV, but do you think Hendrix can do that? not that its all about how fast you can play or anything. just saying
yes, watch red house. And this guy here makes a lot of faults, he misses notes and plays the runs not evenly, it sounds very sloppy and brutal, this guy is definately not a master, he should practise those runs slowlier.
SRV did not copy hendrix. he sounded like his own self. if anything, he sounded a lot more like albert king than hendrix. he didnt really sound much like hendrix at all. they both have styles you can tell right away. phil plays a lot of SRV based stuff but he still has his own style. watch some of his other songs before you judge. but obviously he will alwas have that SRV influence just like SRV had the albert king influence in a lot of his stuff.
Well this man is for real and he's hot. I saw him in Dallas & New York and they loved him North & South. Your jealous or you need your ears/hearing checked.
Snotra says "horrible form like SRV". What a dickhead. Yeah, SRV couldn't play, that's why he achieved so much more then you have knucklehead. Apparently he can play more with three fingers then Snotra can play with all ten!

Man if ever your ever at a gig, I hope there is no neon budweiser lights on, behind the stage....noizzzz!!! And please do the poor people in the front row a favor and point your amp away from them....bright!!!!! Man what a headache.
He is doin an interview, there are no people in the front and that sound is cuz they have their mic to close to his amp/speakers. He plays with Melissa Etheridge, used to be with Jeff Healey Band and has a solo career. Your just not very bright are you?
Cool blues riffs! Imagine what he could play if he added his pinkie, oh well if he ever loses his left pinkie he'll still be able to play guitar. That's the sure sign of a self-taught guitar player.
Vai plays Strats sometimes for recording rhythm guitar parts, but all his leads and his live shows are done entirely on a JEM, not a Strat. And what is wrong with a Strat anyway? Everyone uses one.... Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Lifeson, Johnson, SRV, Knopfler; the list goes on. If all of them played a Strat, there is nothing wrong with it. Unless you're some battery-sniffing tone freak.
Who in the hell are you to be saying this crap? If you're some virtuoso guitar instructor, link to the video and admonish your own students to use their little pinkies to play Steve Vai licks.
It's just a snip of an interview, not a dress rehearsal or an audition for you. This is just what they most likely asked him to show them. He plays more than what's in these interviews in Japan.
He's just noodling, and showing how fast you can play when using your fingers. He doesn't play fast all the time, listen to some of his own songs from his CD Peace Machine
This guy is quickly ranking right up there with Joe Bonamassa as one of my favorite guitarists. He kicks so much ass that it's ridiculous!! My God..I wanna burn all my Strats after hearing this!! This man is truly gifted!!
As for the comment about him copying other peoples riffs and playing them faster, many "legends" have achieved fame by doing this. SRV copied many Albert King riffs and played them with more speed and accuracy. Sayce has played riffs that I think even SRV would admire and have a hard time doing himself.
I wish there were no stupid people. I can't believe all of the comments for this video in which people are doubting the skill of Phillip Sayce! He is giving a demonstration and just screwing around on guitar. Listen to his songs. He is very versatile. He is absolutely one of the best players alive today.
in phils defenece, hes not really playing, hes "noodling" he basically just playing whatever he feels like. ive heard him play in songs and he doesnt just wank away all the time. he still plays his fast parts but he can make a good solos in an actual song.
Instead of crashing on one of the best players of our time that is living, say something nice or nothin' at all you. Ignorant. This shows that the people crashing on Philip aren't players-Here's why-No matter how good or bad someone is at something, a real player can always learn something from another player, whether it be how to do something better or how not to play something. Now, Go Chew On That Talkers!
"Also none of you can play better, please kill yourselves."
OMG hahahahahahaah !!!
I really love how everyone is so keen to judge a player without knowing him. Trust me, this guy is one of the guys with most feeling on this crazy planet.
Philip Sayce is infinitely better than any blues guitarist, and he is technically much better than SRV. Get his album "Peace Machine," he has slower solos. He was playing fast specifically here because his lesson idea was: playing with fingers can be as fast as playing with a pick if not faster- hence he played fast. Also none of you can play better, please kill yourselves.
your kind of a moron when it comes to music man because SRV if he was still alive could absolutely destroy Phillip Sayce when it came to blues playing... its about feel and soul not about speed when it comes to blues..and those licks that he shows I guarentee about 90% of them are mimicked from songs like "ain't gonna give up on love" and "texas flood" those fast penatonics were crafted by SRV and Hendrix.. you have alot to learn when it comes to blues and music my friend
SRV could destroy anyone, that's a given. He's influenced what, 99.9 % of guitarists out there today, so of course there can never be another SRV,or a Hendrix, Clapton, etc. because nobody plays exactly alike. To say that Philip Sayce does not play with soul and feel is downright ignorant and stupid. What do you know? If he's fast, so what, that's what he feels, and thats how he expresses himself. Oh, and I bet your style of guitar playing is 100% original, right?
ok well being an experienced guitar player you have to choose your influences and incorporate their styles into one of your own..this doesn't mean mimicing licks at a faster tempo of one of the greatest blues players of all time..sayce plays technically great but i would not consider him a soulful blues player
This is a video lesson, not Philip in performance. Unless you've seen him live, or listened to everything and everyone he has played for, you can't say that. He's "mimicking" these licks for teaching purposes, duh.
Are these videos from the August 06 Young Guitar DVD (also with Paul Gilbert)? If they are, could you be so kind as to put the rest of his videos up? I'm mainly after the one where he explains his gear. Peace.
thats pretty good i guess. its like Bluesy Shredding. hes no SRV tho, it comes more about style with the blues. i think hes trying to get at that, but hes not quite there. he should slow down and try to do different licks instead sounding the same but real fast. i still gives it a thumbs up tho!

This guy is quickly ranking right up there with Joe Bonamassa as one of my favorite guitarists. He kicks so much ass that it's ridiculous!! My God..I wanna burn all my Strats after hearing this!! This man is truly gifted!!

wen hes finger picking hes restricting himself to two fingers, not at his full potential here, other wise hes brilliant, but fast isnt always good
finbarmaginn 5 years ago
im pretty sure he used the other 2 fingers for the pick, making them un usable

Also none of you can play better, please kill yourselves.

your kind of a moron when it comes to music man because SRV if he was still alive could absolutely destroy Phillip Sayce when it came to blues playing... its about feel and soul not about speed when it comes to blues..and those licks that he shows I guarentee about 90% of them are mimicked from songs like "ain't gonna give up on love" and "texas flood" those fast penatonics were crafted by SRV and Hendrix.. you have alot to learn when it comes to blues and music my friend
bluesman520 5 years ago
SRV could destroy anyone, that's a given. He's influenced what, 99.9 % of guitarists out there today, so of course there can never be another SRV,or a Hendrix, Clapton, etc. because nobody plays exactly alike. To say that Philip Sayce does not play with soul and feel is downright ignorant and stupid. What do you know? If he's fast, so what, that's what he feels, and thats how he expresses himself. Oh, and I bet your style of guitar playing is 100% original, right?
elenibean 5 years ago
ok well being an experienced guitar player you have to choose your influences and incorporate their styles into one of your own..this doesn't mean mimicing licks at a faster tempo of one of the greatest blues players of all time..sayce plays technically great but i would not consider him a soulful blues player
Jshanz 5 years ago
This is a video lesson, not Philip in performance. Unless you've seen him live, or listened to everything and everyone he has played for, you can't say that. He's "mimicking" these licks for teaching purposes, duh.

I hate people who give negative comment and act like a teacher but doesn't show their own video.
If you are a real man you say " this sounds shit look at my video how i do this". A camera isn't expensive
