I bought this with a D90 kit..

Being honest it's a cracking lens I wasn't expecting much but it's a sharp puppy across the range.

It's not going replace a faster lens for low light such as a prime or fast zoom, but for a general purpose lens it's much better than I was expecting.

Hello! I have a question and I would be very grateful if you could help me. I am torn between buying a Canon 550D with lens 18-55 and Nikon D3100 with lens 18-105. I have never had DSLR camera before. So is it better for me to buy my first camera with 18-55 lens or can I skip and buy a better lens even tho I am a begginer.

@sladoled1996 D3100 with 18-105 - it will stay with you longer and give you better results

@sladoled1996 go for the D5100. this 18-105 presents basically the same sharpeness as the the 18-55. I had both. now i have the 35 1.8 (wonderfuland cheap lens) and sigma 17-50 2.8 (much better in terms of sharpeness and also wonerful aperture)

@AmitMusicStaz DX cameras have a 1.5x crop factor. The actual mm will be 18 x 1.5 through 55 x 1.5

Heey as my first lense on my Nikon D5000, i dont want to get an 18-55 lense seeing as how almost everyone ive heard has grown out of it in a matter of months. that being said im debating between an 18-105, 18-200, 50mm f/1.4, ( keep in mind i want to get a 10-24mm in the future thanks :)

@Tetsuoha go to camera calibration and find your lens in development. then if it is bad still, you can manually fix some of the changes

@tordern22, no it just is not bright enough, its sharp no doubt, but i shoot alot of handheld in low light, the shutter speed you need with this thing is is to slow. at 35mm its already at f4.5.

@Jolinator of course this lens is no good in low light situations without flash, no lenses with that aperture is that.. For low light situations without flash you should use f2.8 or lower.. This lens is good for the situations it was made for..

I'm planning to buy a D5000 soon, my first DSLR. But I can't really decide between the kit versions with the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses or the 18-105mm lens, which would be a litte more expensive.

How much better is this lens, compared with the 18-55 (and the 55-200) ? Would it be worth the extra money?

I'd go for the 18-105 or 16-85 on a D3100, lenses are probably more important than bodies.

sir, you could actually set the menu "ON" distortion on D7000... this lens is good for wedding but not best. as long as you use the GARY FONG lightsphere...

@kauxkaux - You could. Depends how good you are with flash lighting because you're going to need it indoors with this lens. Now if you were using this lens outdoors in good lighting, then no problem. If you're going to use fast primes as well such as the 35mm f1.8G, 50mm f1.8 or f1.4, and the 85mm f1.8, then it could work for you. Me, I prefer to use my Nikon 28-70mm f2.8 in conjunction with my 50mm f1.4G for available light.

@Forkroute Nikon so far ahead of canon for PHOTOGRAPHY when it comes to their pro bodies...it's not even funny. I'm a pro photographer, and i took a huge loss selling my canon for nikon stuff, and i'm so glad! nikon's 1200 D7000 is doing better than my 5000 dollar 1d mark iv was. And the D3s, blows away everything canon makes. I can't even imagine Nikon's next set of pro bodies.

You mention correcting distortion in post processing. I use Aperture 3...what do I need to do/use?

@rogerwp - I haven't used Aperture, but I would assume it can do distortion correction. Have you tried looking through the Help section to see if there are instructions? I use Lightroom 3 which does distortion correction very easily.
