A legcsodálatosabb erotikus zenéje a rock-nak.
The Internet takes you on a funny journey sometimes: Looking for info in the Colosseum in Rome, I see a Wikipedia disambiguation page mentioning this band. I read the page... I'm interested... I youtube for some stuff... This is the first thing up... Good times, great discovery. I was just getting tired of the first phase of the solo when the guitar player played a three note per string A major scale in sextets....
Never ever seen anybody tackle both the Sax and Clarinet at the same time like that. Quite an achievement I must say. RIP Dick!! :(
And over time I've always overlooked Mark Clarke. Quite the bassist indeed. Can't understand why Ritchie Blackmore fired him from Rainbow because he didn't like fingerstyle bass. And how he left Uriah Heep which I ain't complaining because Gary Thain was AMAZING!!!
@FVD: Dick was great, but Rahsaan Roland Kirk was the master of multiple horns/winds. He was probably an influence on Dick, just as he was on Ian Anderson.
Hiseman is one step short of taking a solo near the end and still keeps perfect beat, such an underated drummer, hell such an underated band in general
@CorkyMuldoon why would they perform the same way? it was good then, but they already did that. I absolute love this rendering, it's so emotinal and powerful, Clem is a real genius, I've never heard anything like this, can't stop listening!
Bit of a late reply... but I've just read Jack Bruce's recently released biography by Harry Shapiro. In it, Jack (who has played with, er, a few guitarists ;-) states that Clem Clempson is 'one of his favourites'. Page 225, if anyone wants to check the quote!
I'll cut all the unnecessary discussion that could've been made here along this video... Simply the best guitar solo I've ever heard and probable will ever hear in my whole life.
I completely agree with you. That solo on guitar is most fantastic and expressive one in history of jazz-rock. There is no other to compare with it. Clem had a great power and he looked quite inconspicuous. Colosseum was splendid band. Nowadays, we can hear only the sounds of rubbish. Pitty...
if you enjoy colosseum, then be sure to check out jon hiseman`s early seventies project, TEMPEST. the cd currently still available is "under the blossom" and features both their albums, as well as ultra-rare BBC recordings with the twin sonic guitar attack of both the immortal ollie halsall (patto) AND allan holdsworth. bassist, again is the much underrated mark clarke. be forewarned: these TEMPEST BBC recordings are among the most virtuoso rock guitar performances ever committed to tape...
I saw colosseum in the late nineties after having just missed them as a kid in the early 70`s; I was a bit anxious about encountering a bit of an oldies review, but boy was I wrong! every one of the musicians put in an absolutely sterling performance that pleased the head as well as the soul simultaneously (which is of course what great music should always do). needless to say, jon hiseman`s solo was absolutely incredible and will remain a lifetime highlight...colosseum cannot be overrated!
outstanding part of all "suite" in their performance. dave clempson's guitar part was very stunning although many years passed. many thanks for share!
I listened to better live performances of this great piece of universal music. Musicians are great. The piece is almost unknown by people, but it is one of the best music i ever listen.
I used to love this selection - but why did they have to mess with the original? This is not the original "Valentyne Suite." It starts as the original did on the US release of "Those Who Are About to Die Salute You," but it ends with a Heckstall-Smith selection from their second US release. I wish I could find a pristine, original version on a CD somewhere...
Regarding the original... it depends which side of the pond you are/were on. It seems a bit odd that the the US/UK had different selection of tracks on the early albums. The combination here is what we Brits are/were used to. Being the slightly later release I guess the band preferred "The Grass is Greener" as the finale rather than the "Beware the Ides of March". Perhaps it's just familiarity but I prefer this. Either way Clemson's guitar here whips any '69 versions (IMHO).
One of my all time favorite bands. I remember seeing (and hearing) them a number of times in their early days (w. James Litherland) in a small club in Copenhagen. Jon Hiseman was (and is) amazing, providing perfect accompaniment while not being intrusive and if you decide to listen in to his drumming, there sure is a lot of "interesting stuff" going on.
They play like there´s no tomorrow. Stunning performance. They must have been one of the very best rock bands if not the best in early seventies, still marvellous!
Marvellous in 1969 and revived here excellently 25 years later. All consummate musicians, perhaps wrong to pick one out but Dave Clemson comes out best here showing he is even better now than then (I must add Hiseman is THE drummer bar none, Heckstall-Smith was always king of sax and Greenslade is may fav keyboard player. Mark Clarke could do with some lessons in cool - and a haircut!). I was very saddened at the loss of D H-S when the revival was well underway. Lucky JH can call on the missus.
