Northwest Passage is a film by Mike Lastra. He is working on another one on Portland's Satyricon club. You can see more on his youtube site MikeBrainfollies
I went to the premiere of this documentary. When Over the Edge came on screen the audience of mostly old Portland scenesters when ballistic. If it's possible to both bawl and jump out of your seat at the same time, I think I did it. This song will still kick your ass and take names.
Greg Sage has always been an inspiration to me.I knew him when lived in Portland and saw the Wipers countless times usually w/ The Neo Boys.He was a big influence on my first band; Suburban Guerillas and his influence continued w/Rain and now The John McConnell Band.Greg is the epitome of an uncompromising artist.
The thing I like about Wipers is that they were so musically intriguing for a punk band. Unusual chord/tempo changes, great solos and lyrics. The only punk band I could compare to them is Wire but I like Wipers better :)
At the time it probably would have been deemed a bit 'smarter' than punk.I consider this to be garage rock moreso than punk. It's more 'Mclusky' than 'Pistols' (strange comparisons I know given that the band are American.)But if you listen to a few tracks of each you'll get what I mean I reckon.
I'm surprised that the singer has stated the band didn't really to really fit into "punk" then. Seems perfectly punk to me, I mean in terms of what punk should have been about. I mean if it's just preferring not to be labeled, that's cool. But to me, this is up there with the fairly few examples of perfect punk.
@TheTrainRex .....there is a new genre of death metal/black metal bands in the Portland area that are just now coming up...they are raw, talented and have roots buried deep in Portland punk music culture (whether they want to admit it or not !)...they just are not quite catching on yet !..check out my page ! DoomSower, Spear Induced Carnage, Caustic...there are a bunch ! they rock live ! come on people support local music !
I posted several songs from Land of the Lost, Follow Blind, The Circle, Silver Sail and The Herd for anyone interested. Lets get the Wipers back out there!
great song. i love the first verse so much that i overlooked the second. grow up and be a man...drop dead right where u stand...simple but powerful lyrics. gregs the man.
And also, this man is not money hungry. The Wipers box set sells so cheap and the music is great. Anyone out there who wants punk music must get it before some mother&*^()) sell them on ebay beyond your reached.
@RebelThoughts They didn't get the recognition they deserved becuase Greg Sage didn't want his music to go on any major label, but then they'd go mainstream and Greg didn't want that. In a way their lack of recognition was their own fault.
I used to laugh every time I'd hear the phrase, "Portland Pride." Thats before I discovered bands like this one and Poison Idea. I live over 1,400 miles away now and I love hearing this stuff. This song still makes my head crawl. Ex1le444 is right, this is about as punk as it gets.
I just watched this again and need to post again because this is such a classic performance. It rates very highly for me personally as one of the greatest Rock moments captured on Film. Awesome......

Having grown up in Portland during the 80's, the Wipers were by far my favorite local band. Their sound help shape my tastes for years to come. They were introduced to me by the Church of Northwest Music on KBOO around the release of Over the Edge.

Kurt mentioning Greg's name actually gave him alot of exposure and if you were smart you would realize that. The Wipers are too old of a band for kids now to get into, most people heard of the Wipers thru Kurt if you want to admit it or not.
Punks never considered them as "punk music" when the wipers first came out, as Greg Sage intended the band to be. Today they're one of top influential band considered by most punks.
Greg knows sound, I am 100% right about that. No distrespect to Cobain (he was way behind in what he was doing & a mere student)to mention him in the same sentence as Greg is detremental, Greg knows sound, sleeps, breaths & eats it,there is nothing fake about Greg.Greg don't need Cobains name mentioned in the same breath, it was the other guy who wanted Gregs name mentioned in the same sentence to enhance his credability. Greg is genuine.
Greg used just the right amount of distortion--kept his tubes sound really hollow and then added the most killer Echoplex. Even live, he drug that Echoplex along and had it set up on a stool in front of the amps, spinning away. The disintegration of the decay envelope in Greg's reverb was what gave his sound such an ominous presence.
wow dude I dont know really anybody with the scoop on gs's sound. I've tried to emulate it for years with varying degrees of sucess. There just isnt enough information about gregs rigs on the net, I guess that just shows how underappreciated he still remains.

Fucking AWESOME! Over The Edge is one of the greatest albums of all time, it was my soundtrack to high school, this is the TRUTH!

I still get bummed when I think how I was supposed to see them, around the time they recorded the live LP, but my "friend" never showed up; I see him the next day, he's still tripping on LSD, smiling, "I stayed up all nite talking to..". I'm supposed to be happy for him? What a schmuck!
Hey, anybody know what Greg sings between 2:48 and 2:51??? Help!
You're right, Marge. Just like the time I could have met Mr. T at the mall. The entire day, I kept saying, 'I'll go a little later, I'll go a little later...' And when I got there, they told me he just left. And when I asked the mall guy if he'll ever come back again, he said he didn't know. Well, I'm never going to let something like that happen again!

so no profits are lost from me.
But I WILL buy it, as will anyone who got so absorbed in this album cause it reflected their life (songs like Over the Edge, Romeo, No One Loves An Alien, The Lonely One, Doom Town, etc); and the band of course.
Great to see people giving the Wipers some credit for what they did. It's been a helluva long time coming though. Like all true innovators Greg Sage was largely ignored while so many of his imitators went on to fame and commercial success. I think it's generally true that the further ahead of your time you are the longer it takes for your talent to be recognised. If I'm right then Greg must be one of the greatest innovators of 20th century rock.
I want to know because I've listened few songs of the wipers :( and I didn't hear other like them or greg sage, so i don't know who are the imitators :P
If I start naming names my inbox is gonna fill up with so much crap so fast. Sorry but I'm not goin' there. If you're familiar with the Wipers' material and the Portland/Pacific NW scene from the 80s onward and if you listen to what people are saying in this clip I would've thought the answer to your question was self-evident.
Cool but the guitars are mixed way to low . Who's the dude in the beginning that looks like the bastard offspring of Brian Gregory and Dave Vanian ?

Greg didnt really want to be a huge band,
the wipers were just a project for him, he didnt want to tour and be in the press.
he wanted the music to be a part of the listeners imagination, so that we'd get a deeper perspective on it. instead of being a commodity.
too bad they stopped.

If I start naming names my inbox is gonna fill up with so much crap so fast. Sorry but I'm not goin' there. If you're familiar with the Wipers' material and the Portland/Pacific NW scene from the 80s onward and if you listen to what people are saying in this clip I would've thought the answer to your question was self-evident.

these are not imitators. this is the original lineup to the Wipers. get your head up out of your ass, califragi-faggoty-whatever.
