  • I finished reading "Changling" a few days ago and started "Coven" now. What I don't understand, why is shapeshifting considered wrong??? I have an afinity for wolves, so I loved that part of the book. But I could never get a clear reason why it was wrong except "the bad guy does it" which is pretty lame. Is this explained elsewhere in the series?

  • Yeah, I don't know, it was never explained in the books. Wolves are my favorite animal, and I think it would be the most magical, spiritual experience to change into the most beautiful, majestic creature on the planet. Maybe because it goes against nature, because you're not supposed to change your shape? I don't know. SPOILER Morgan shape changes again in book 14, into a hawk, and she uses her form to kick major bad guy ass! ;) So I don't know why it's considered wrong.

  • Cool! I love hawks right after wolves (gray timber wolves to be exact). Unicorns rank slightly above wolves and mice slightly below hawks. What are your other favorite animals (fictional and/or non)? :) There's a video I'll send about a wolf's prayer...

  • Well, my favorite animals are wolves. My favorite animal when I was little were giant squid (yeah, I was weird), then they became my second favorite animals, after wolves. Hmmm...my greatest wish is to be a mermaid, so they're up there, and they're my favorite mythical creatures. My close second favorite mythical creatures are werewolves. I pretty much love all animals, except crabs, which I'm terrified of *shudder*. I love animals! :)

  • The giant squid is pretty cool. I've seen a model of one at the Natural History Museum in NYC both as a kid and a few years ago with my neice. Mermaids and werewolves are pretty neat. I like dragons (particularly wise benelovent ones) and griffins (particularly if they have some riddle for you to solve).

  • Oh, I love dragons and griffins, too! They are so cool! Sphinxes are also awesome, they're like, the riddle-masters! ;)

  • Yes, but sphinxes are not as cute as griffins.

Riddle: what has four legs in the morning, two legs midday and three legs in the evening?

  • True! ;) Answer: A man, because in the beginning of his life, he crawls on all four legs, in the middle of his life he walks on two feet, and at the end he walks with a cane. I love the story of Oedipus! ;)

  • Good: You throw away the outside and cook the inside. Then you eat the outside and throw away the inside. What did you eat?

Send me one if you would. I need to work my mind too. :)

  • Ooooh...I don't know! I'll have to think on that! :) Okay, I'll send you one! :)

  • Knowledge is a wonderful thing. Use your head when practicing anything, though.

I'm most of the way through "Changling." I work long hours so reading is slow. But I've been awake since 2:30AM so I had time this morning.

Have you read any Darkover books by Marion Zimmer-Bradley? I strongly suggest it. If not, I suggest "Exile's Song." It's in the middle of her works but it's an excellent springboard into the world of Darkover. The main character is a little like Morgan, but older.

  • Knowledge is power! :) No, I've never read Darkover, though I have read The Mists of Avalon series by Marion Zimmer Bradley, which is fantastic. I always meant to read other books by her, I will have to check Darkover out! :)

  • You'll like it, there's crystals, magic/mindskill, bloodlines.... well, you'll see. :)

  • Oh, awesome! I will definitely check it out! :)

  • Like I said, "Exile's Song" is an excellent springboard into the world of Darkover. You follow the main character, who was born there but has abosolutely NO knowledge of that world through her discover of Darkover and her own potential within. Happy reading!

  • Cool, thanks for bringing it to my attention! :)

  • ...And if you think Hunter's hot, wait until you read about some of the men of Darkover! :P

  • Hehehe, I don't know if anyone could beat Hunter, but I'll be open-minded about it! ;)

  • Nice video. You've convinced me to look into the series. Library, here I come. :)

  • Thank you! Yeah, you definitely should read them, they are awesome! :)

  • I've nabbed "Changling" and "Coven." I'll let you know what I think.

  • Cool, though The Coven is the second book and Changeling is the eighth, so you're going to be really confused! :) There's a MAJOR plot twist in the fourth, Dark Magick, and if you read Changeling before that book, you're going to have no idea what's going on!

  • I've started with "Changling", but the author touches on past plotlines so it's not too confusing.

So far I get the feeling this is a "Harry Potter" version of Wiccan practices. I'm going to pick a few brains of Wiccan friends of mine, but some stuff didn't seem right. For example, in "Changling" Morgan levitates the elements set at the four corners. I'm not a practicing Wiccan, but this seemed WRONG to me. You don't mess with those once the circle is formed. Right?

  • Yeah, it's Fantasy, not real Wicca. I mean, some of the stuff is real Wicca, but even Wiccans can't shoot balls of fire out of their hands! It's sort of "Harry Potter" magic, with Wiccan beliefs. Still fantastic books, though! :)

  • If anything it's got me to look into Wicca again. My husband has some books on Wicca in our apartment -- somewhere (we have more books than many local libraries). It's just a matter of finding which bookcase, which shelf and how deep to dig (up to 3 deep). LOL

  • Hehehe, I know what you mean! My books have overflowed my bookshelf, and there are dangerously high piles of books everywhere around my room, in no rhyme or reason! :) That's cool they've got you looking into Wicca, though, I'm Wiccan myself! :)

  • We have bookshelves lining on every wall in almost every room. You move books out of the way to use the lightswitch. There's none in the bathroom and 4 shelves in the kitchen, but hallway, bedroom, both offices & living room are packed. But you're still young. I'm almost 40 and my husband is past 50!

I've looked into Wicca before. I make it a habbit to learn as much as I possibly can and things change. So you never assume was was true 20 years ago is still the same.

    I'm Christian here.

  • When I'm an adult, my whole house will probably be a library! At least, I hope so! ;) That's cool you're open minded like that, my dad was Christian, and he didn't really like it that I was Wiccan, though he didn't stop me, because he was pretty open minded too. It was just sort of an unspoken agreement that we wouldn't talk about it. Learning about Mythology and Religion are my passions, they're so fascinating! I'm currently learning about the Christian Devil, which is really interesting.

  • I'm very open minded. It's a shame people are blinded by religious lines. There's too much we actually have in common and too much to share.

While Christian, I also possess a singing bowl, meditate, can ground myself quickly when needed and know what is expected should I partake in a healing circle. We're not all bible thumpers :-P LOL

Oh, and I DEFINATELY like the concept that whatever you put out - good or bad - returns to you thrice. By the way, I learned that before I read these books.

  • That's awesome, the world needs more people like you! It's also true that other religions have prejudices, my sister and her boyfriend are Wiccan, and they absolutely hate Christianity, which I don't understand. Wicca is supposed to be about being open and accepting. My two life mottoes are 1. An it harm none, do what ye will, which is the Wiccan Rede, and 2. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, which is of course from the Bible, and is Christian.

  • Hate sadly rises from ignorance and fear. If you don't know or understand something the "get them before they get you" mentality kicks in. There's also the "I'm right so you must be wrong" attitute. This is within a religion as well as between ones (Woodbaynes vs. other wiccans in the book). Both are wrong and sadly leads to a loss of knowledge and understanding. Not a gain.

My mottos are (1) Do Unto others... and (2) Love all (friends, enemies and strangers) and pass that Love on.

  • Yeah, I don't understand why people are intolerant towards other people and their beliefs. I mean, I know WHY they are, I just don't understand how someone could actually think that way. For instance, I think if my sister actually did some research on Christianity, instead of just making snap judgments, she'd find a lot of beauty and goodness. And all religions have elements of one another in them, they're pretty much all the same story, just told in different ways.

  • History plays a part. To borrow from "Lion King" some "put your behind in your past" instead of "putting your past behind you." LOL

In case you didn't know, Christianity borrowed from many religions. Jewish roots are obvious, but also pagan (rabbits and eggs at Easter, evergreen tree(m)/wreath(f) at Christmas). Christ was actually born in the summer, but we celebrate it on the day the sun is first visibly moves back North - His Light entering our dark world.

  • Yeah, whenever you study mythology you realize how all religions are about the same things. For instance, I have this fantastic book by Joseph Campbell called The Hero With a Thousand Faces, it's about how the "Hero Quest" in all mythologies and fairy tales is exactly the same, and the hero is always the same, it was really, really good and interesting. And I knew those things about Christianity, sadly enough, a lot of people don't, or simply won't acknowledge it.

  • I'll have to check that work out; I've never read it. There's a story I love to tell (too long for here) about five blind men and an elephant. Each describes what he reaches out and finds: the trunk, ear, side, leg and tail. In the end there are similarities and differences and the narrator asks the question, which blind man truly saw the elephant? There is a divine being so far beyond human comprehension that we need these "user interfaces" to interact. Each religion only sees one small part.

  • That is really cool! That's so true, to have as complete an understanding as it's possible for a human being to have, you need to have knowledge of all sorts of different religions.

  • Wise words.

  • Thank you! You're a very wise and beautiful person, too, the world needs more people like you! :)

  • Thanks! :) The same can be said of you.

  • Thank you! :)

  • You're definitely accepted, as I'm you! ;) I hereby dub thee Emma/imanicecreamcone, a member of sweptawayfanclub! :)

  • Hehehe, thanks, me! ;)
