@kjellturi I did explain but the video was not complete, in the process of my converting the clips to a format usable by windows, i lost 5-7 seconds off of the first part of each clip.
I DO plan to remake this video, keep checking in for updates.
@OblivonKnight Yes I still plan to remake this video. And with a few days 'off' work coming up I hope that I will be able to do it. The skipping around was not due to me, it was due to the camera that I was useing at the time recording a format that was not compatable with my computer, and in the conversion process i lost 5-7 second off the front of the videos.
best way to calculate how much rings u need to add is by this.Finish first row, finish second row (i started from 14,second row=14,then i added 1 on each 2 and got 14+7=21 for third row) now see the diameter of second row and third row including binding rings. mine second row r=3cm third row r=5cm. now calculate O2-O1=> 2Pi(r2-r1) and i got 12.56 cm. Now divide that number with diameter of ring + x mm (mine was 1cm+2*2mm+ i added 6mm for gap) and got 6,28~7!!! so 7 rings per row=constant
@sweredom so if third row has 21 rings (u need to add 7) so u will add 1 at every 3 for a total of 28 rings.then u will add 1 at every 4th for total of 35 then 1 at every fifth for total of 42........
Thanks so much, i'm watching from Italy and you're explanation is clear and simple! Your tutorials have been very useful! i hope i will be the first girl here in the "medieval-nerd-community" on youtube (^_^ i'm joking no offense intended) to make a ring-mail huberk... hope, cross fingers!!
@Demonlord789 I just recently made my first glove. I you start with the expanding weave for the finger tips, and expend it out maybe ones, then start weaving it from there working down with will be your finger, you'll want to leave enough space in your fingers so that you can close your hand.
Then you will weave a piece for the back and front of your hand and connect it to when you have made for your fingers. That is the tricks part, getting them all to line up.
Great vid, but I see one mayor problem. I am making a coif at home and I started with 14 rings just like you. Then I added 7 rings, just like you said.... skip 2 each time. So I end up with 21 rings. But If I want to expand it, I can't use the pattern you said, because 21 is uneven. Could you explain me what is best to do next?
@Tw1stedMoogle I finished that piece and made it into a bottle holder for my glass bottle that i use to take to ren faires with me. Have thought about making a nice flower pot hanging basket with the weave and a few other fancy ones though. just no time as of late to do much of anything.
@07tives No problem. I plan to remake this video sometime. It would seem that when i Converted it from some kind of apple format to WMA it cut of a nit bit of both the begining and end or each clip.
lol you are out of rings i got my dad to make them but that are a hell of a lot smaler but it makes a lot of differents in the fikness and lookes a hell lot better hope you get some more rings sinsirly 07tives
if youre unfortunately a perfectionist like me, you'll want to be aware of how many rings are on the outermost row before you start expanding, if the number isnt divisible by 2 then you will be adding 2 rings next to eachother at some point, so what i do to avoid this is add one every 3 on those rows. also, i skip the expanding step on a row here and there because i ended up with too many rings in the later rows
You're very welcome. While this video isn't the best, due to the camera that I using only recording in a format now supported by windows movie maker. But a remake of this video is on my list of things to do. It's just not very high atm... sorry :p But thank you for the comment.
rather than puting one ring every other one i put in one ring on every ring (14 extra rings) and its worked out so far should i worry about it not working near the end or later? i don't see why it wouldn't just wonderin because we did it differently
Everyone does it differnt, and there really is no WRONG was to do about doing it. It's that that the every other rings way works better for me, helps me keep the expanding under control. and it seems to look a bit better.
1. is there a way to fill that ugly big ring in the middle or to make a coif without one sooo big?
2. do you continu the expansion when your down to the face part?
Thank you
P.S. coif is said like tihs : take the wha from what, but put it between the c and f, like this cwaf. Im sorry, this is the best example i can find (im french :P)
Yes, I DO plan on redoing this while video. I filmed it with a diff camera then I am use and if recorded in the wrong format for my computer. and in converting it I seems that I lost a few seconds off the end of each clip.
1. You can use a smaller ring yes, but you just need to have enought room so that the rings will lay right.
2. You continue it till about the forehead. as such a time you would stop the expanding weave and continue the normal weave till you get down to about the chin. After that you will want to start the expanding weave again to that it will be wider around the neck/shoulders.
greetings i liked your video, but i was wondering if you would mind doing a demenstration shwoing how to make the actual colf form around the head, face, and neck, like the crusaders of old, because im not sure how i would get the angles right.

Can you make a video where you dont jump so much and show how you make a full circle? I dident quite get it when you suddenly had more added to it.

Extremely nice explanation! Very easy to follow!
I like your explanation on changing directions or adding shapes!
I'm currently working on a Hauberk using 6 in 1, and will be starting on the Coif soon. When I work it out I'll post a vid on expanding 6 in 1.

@daretotelldatruth to close your hand. because when you close your hand the glove will move up your wrist. Hope that was helpful.

I Bet if you tried you could make a nice hanging steamer basket with this.
Have it going up the inside of the pan and then hooking to the edges so it hangs about 1 inch off the bottom of the pan.
Using some kind of wire to keep it's shape on the bottom maybe.
Just an idea that i think would be cool.

cool! this was so much help! i always thought that to expand the weave, you work with varying sizes of rings...
kybigbro 2 years ago
Well I'm glad that this video helped you.
And I had also thought that the expanding weave required getting larger and larger rings but you only really need the one over sized ring.
But you know that after watching the video. :P
