@Khironification Only if Opeth include Death Metal stuff on their setlist, else it would be awesome, but not godly. And Pain of Salvation should be in there and they should play more stuff from The Perfect Element Part 1, Entropia and Remedy Lane. And Shadow Gallery should appear as well. And Threshold, Porcupine Tree, etc. ;)
Dream Theater and Periphery are touring through Europe together btw, in case you didn't know. I'm considering going to their show in Switzerland.
No he doesn't...on the album there's a soft part where he whispers "inside your tears" Obviously he chooses not to perform that part...forgetting lyrics is for amateurs. Mike would never do such a thing :)
The main difference between these gods and Dream Theater is that the vocalist in DT sounds like a squeezed teenager. (admit it, it's true. He can't perform as good as this. ever.)
it is true. i dont understand y people pick two random bands like that and pit them against each other in an imaginary fued. like those icp and slipknot fags. who gives a shit? opeth is better than dream theater cuz metal beats rock any day
@oniman13 when i posted my last comment i didnt know mangini was going to be their new drummer yet.
from what ive seen on youtube he seems to be pretty awesome. im going to see dream theater live in a month, so ill see if he can match my expectations for a dream theater drummer
@luckyluke193 Look up their audition video "The Spirit Carries On". Roadrunner has it up in 3 20 minute sections. They played with some amazing drummers.
@MrYourdoom yeah yeah, I love DT too. They play great. But for vocalist, Opeth wins. Labrie cant sing live as good as before.. Both Opeth and DT consist of great musicians
@MrYourdoom Hell yeah, I love DT, but everytime I hear their singer I just turn it off... But when I listen to their songs like Stream of Consiousness i truly notice how good they could be! But even then, I think Opeth is still the greatest band EVER!
i've been "youtubeing" opet a bit today and reading up on the comentary..and, found it interesting how many people know and love Dream Theatre and completly missed out on existance of Opeth. this is only an observation as i found it interesting..
looking forward to seeing both in Ljubljana at the end of the month. too bad they wont come to my country but hey - as long as they get close enough :D
Well is discovered Opeth before Dream Theater, and love them both as much. Unfortunate thing about Dream Theater is they fit the typical prog band with where every band member has to do a show off section at some point. I mean, i'm up for that, but those parts just go on for too long.
If you have no theory knowledge or have no desire to learn any, then you are seriously handicapping yourself as a musician and a song writer...not that they don't make sweet music but it can only go so far
see thats bullshit. some of the worlds best musicians dont or didnt know theory, like hendrix, stevie ray vaughan, rory gallagher, robert johnsonn, and without them, modern music wouldnt exist
and i don't think that they always use their knowledge to write a song. mikael said, that he has many many riffs in his books and just put them together. sometimes this is the best way to write a song
It's just that I watched them doing a lesson on youtube and the interviewer asked Mikael about the name of a chord he played and he said : ''I don't know''..But theory or not..does it really matter?
How many musicians sit down and think out a chord progression, a harmonized solo or a break down? Now compare that to how many write most of their stuff in a jam.
The majority of musicians understand theory and how their music works, but individual and collective creativity is far more important than knowledge.
I say that theory does matter, but some can get away without it, and some can't. Some people can write great music without any theory knowledge at all. I would however have to conclude that they will never reach their fullest potential without it.. Why not know when you can know?
dude the way michael goes back into the death metal vocals at the end makes for such an epic ending

@MrYourdoom I agree that LaBrie is definitely the weakest DT member. But Petrucci, Myung and Rudess (and Portnoy, too bad he left) dominate!
Also in my opinion Dream Theater are gods too, they are gods of the "DT-sub-style" of prog metal
luckyluke193 11 months ago
@luckyluke193 Their new drummer, Mike Mangini, is as good as Portnoy in my eyes. Maybe better in some areas.

@MrYourdoom Well I loved him in the 90's for sure, but ever since six degrees he sounds terrible live, in the studio it's ok, but not great.

You don't write like he does and say shit like that. Theory is irrelevant to the listener, but absolutely key to the musician.
