@vivelhistoire - A mí me sucede lo mismo, pero al contrario, intento que Callas me llegue, lo intento, y no lo consigo, de todos modos la considero una cantante excepcional, VIVA RENATA TEBALDI !!!

Geez! Makes you wanna ask that audience whether this is a circus or an opera performance. And to just repeat that part is really tacky I think. I guess it was a circus. Callas never did an encore as far as I know but then her focus was a different one altogether.

I love her Traviata, because she did it with her big voice and very healthy - its a voiceshow and I can only say that this woman has been ONE OF THE LIRICOSPINTOS of all times !
Listen to her Tu mami Alfredo THIS IS ITALIANITA AND INTENSITY !
La Tebaldi does have an extraordinary voice here, very intense, huge and pure... but I don't really like her interpretation, her verism schooling shows way too much here. You can't sing La Traviata the way you sing Butterfly or Mimi. I don't like her as Violetta.
But anyways, if all the opera singers we have today could sing and perform half as well as Tebaldi did, I'd be glad.
That's why Renata's voice interpreted so well desperate female characters such as Violetta, Manon Lescaut, even her Mimi is a strong woman in comparison to purely lyric interpretation. From what I know about her otherwise, she was a great person too.
Tebaldi does not go out of the frame of the voice. That is probably why she didn't lose it early due to overuse. She showed it is possible to get all the emotion through vocal art and the music itself. This is true bel canto.
Some people have had objections to Tebaldi's coloratura or the alleged lack of it. This may be true in some isolated cases. But overall the constant employment of super musical effects is much worse, re: Callas. This can be heard even in her 1958 Traviata (not the Lisbon) where she shouts some of the notes. Although perhaps dramatically justified now and then, it became more and more or a habit and eventually took over. I don't think any soprano today can sing like Tebaldi.
her, Ghena's interpretation is not something that stirrs me so deeply as Renata's. Plus there is something electrical in Renata's voice that is just ecstatic! And she is able to thin it down when necessary and give it full rein when she sings above the orchestra. Very unique! Ghena, in comparison, has a beautiful voice in all registers, huge too, but lacking in "electricity" of the ecstatic, almost crazy kind that Renata had. That's why Renata's voice
Here is one observation and feel free to disagree and offer counter arguments.
The more I have been listening to opera, I have come to a conclusion that Tebaldi is my favorite singer. Interpretation wise I don't see her inferior to Callas, plus she had the voice to back it up. I respect Callas for her interpretation however, she pushed her voice in roles where it did not fit, and her lower register in dramatic roles is simply afwul. Ghena Dimitrova does have the voice, however, her
Wrong on all 3 accounts ,. While all 3 were arguably the Best this role belongs to only 1 >The Late Great Beverly Sills PERIOD.............................
She is MAGNIFICENT, so highly EMOTIONAL PERFORMANCE! I adore LA TRAVIATA, especially the second act that contains this and the heartbreaking duet with father Germont. While I was listening to this, I recalled the Covent Garden performance from the early 1990s with Gheorghiu as Violetta. I have it on DVD - OUT OF THIS WORLD!
Renata Tebaldi the absolute very best Soprano of All-Time as heard here, only Callas could rival her and it was a close rivalry but i would have to give Tebaldi a slight edge and let's not for the wonderful Beverly Sills a Great Violetta. In my opinion they are the top 3 Diva's in the history of Grand Opera, Tebaldi, Callas and Sills. Great video Thanks for posting. 5*****
I think it would be great a Traviata with the three of them, Sills first act, Tebaldi second (both scenes) and Callas third. The second act of Tebaldi's Traviata is one of the greatest things on earth!
bravissima ed io sono un callasiano, ce ne fossero cosi` oggi come lei e maria callas , magari ritornerei al teatro
