one thing cocktiels prefer to sit on a flat hand or shoulder vs. clasping a finger. put your hand flat up to it like a step and they are more apt to step up on it. All mine had wooden perches but preferred to sit out on the open horizontal cage door on a terrycloth (no loops open fibers) covering.
@wildcatjdh Not necessarily true. Their feet are designed to grasp something more securely when they can wrap their toes around it. All the babies I've raised were trained and perfectly content to climb onto my finger without any difficulty. If they *cannot* grasp your finger, then their feet may not have developed correctly.
I would like a pet cockatiel. I saw one in the exotic pet store, and it was the only one of the three in the cage that would not stop looking at me and didn't make screeching noises at me when he saw me. He climbed the rungs of the cage to get a better look at me, and he seemed very curious and calm. I would like to get THAT cockatiel because I felt a special bond to him. I believe that you cannot choose the pet--the pet has to choose you!
@TheMadameHannah I always thought that. Nice to know someone thinks in the same direction as me. I've been wanting a pet bird but just dont know if to pick a lovebird or a cockatiel? Maybe u could help!
@ryan098098 Either can be wonderful companions. More importantly is to get your bird from a reputable breeder. A hand-raised, hand-fed bird will be a MUCH better companion than not. Both are very affectionate but the Cockatiels chatter/whistle and make more noise than lovebirds. Cockatiels can be taught to speak and I have heard of lovebirds talking, but it's rare. Don't be afraid to ask questions; a good breeder has nothing to hide. Talk to people who own them for starters :) Good luck!
@jesperolsen1997 What is the difference between a Corgie and a Husky?? Budgies and Cockatiels are different breeds of birds, different size/colour/shape/personality/traits etc
@MrCorncorncorn my bird does the same. It means they are comfortable with hearing your voice. the slightly puffy look is the "i'm lazy and listening. I'm comfortable" At least that is the behaviour i get from my cockatiel and he is a little over 4 years old.
My cockatiel hate me, bought him a mate and she hates me too. I tried getting her to be nice bit it doesn't work. She just tries nibbling me. The male on the other hand just bites the SH8t out of me. How can I tame em'?
I had a grumpy parakeet then never liked people. I had him quite a few years before he passed. It makes me nervous thinking about getting another bird.
i hate how people "MUST" always buy the "healthy" pet, it doesnt at all matter if the pet is sick, or ugly, or messy, or in anyway not normal! those animals do NOT want to spend their lives in small crowded cages, or tiny crowded tanks, dogs and cats that dont sell grow up in pounds! all that matters is what's on the inside!.. even with animals!
@AypawFia a few days like a week....mine still fight but its because the nest box is two small for both of them to be in there but its nothing like with force but like saying that your in my way or like making them move if he or she didnt listen to each other...but just make sure to keep an eye on them ..if you dont see them fight within a week or so then your ok...
My mom bought a cockatiel once that was merely the loudest talker but he really didn't turn out to make a good pet. He was always squirmy around me and at 1st it took a while just to get him to perch. He was the total opposite of my female bird which would run to me to get my attention. So my advice on buying a cockatiel besides the basic health and such is to get the one that is comfortable coming up to you and sitting on your finger/shoulder. They are the best.
i have two cocktail birds, i got them for free at the age of 5 years old.. and they arent exactly very tamed.. they cna sing and stuff but doesent whant me to touch them they run away from my hand.. i had them now for one month.. i would like to get help, my question is....
is it possible to ''tame'' them at the age of 5 so they can get up to you're hand.. or is it only possible when they are babys?
@DonChilenito My advice would be to try and get them to perch 1st by pushing up on their belly with your finger. If they bite you then just ignore it, don't flinch. If they bite really severely then there is a way to train that out of them that I learned. What you do is you take your thumb and index finger and grab their beak from the sides when they bite you. Not too hard, just enough to get a hold of it. Their beak can still go up and down a bit but not as much.
@DonChilenito Everytime you do this they will be more discouraged to bite. Also it is important to know how to pick them up when you need to. Perching works but while they are not trained and you need to transport them to another location you need to learn how to pick them up by grabbing them. They won't like it at 1st but they will get used to it. What you do is cup your hand over their wings and with your finger tips under their belly gently lift, don't ever squeeze.
@DonChilenito If their feet have been perching then their reflex is to grab it as soon as you lift them. So make sure you never pull them off roughly. Allow them a moment to relax their feet and let go. Another important thing which will be the most important to getting your birds to develop a relationship with you is petting. I don't mean like a dog though where you stroke their back. Birds don't really like that. They really like to be petted on their head.
@DonChilenito The best way to do this is to take your thumb and index finger and slowly and very gently move your fingers over the back of the neck area in a pinching motion. While not really pinching anything. Just beware of any pin feathers. They can kinda poke them. They like being rubbed all around the head and one the cheeks too with one finger. Just make sure you are very gentle and going slow.
@DonChilenito After a while the bird will come to you and put its head down at your hand wanting to be petted. Sometimes they will be a little torn for a while. They might put their head down then suddenly spring up and bite you then put their head back down lol. Over time they need to learn that biting you won't do anything. Also you will know when the bird is really comfortable and likes it when they dip their head down while being petted.
@HikaruYamamoto I never said thats not a tiel O_O He called it a keet so I said that he shouldnt be making a video if he doesnt know that that bird is clearly NOT a keet.
Your endless ladder exercise for this lovely bird is a bad understanding and since when people called you 'EXPERT'? you're not yet deserve with this title at all!
@doodieman74 You want to get the best one though right? When you buy one you are making a commitment and it is important you make sure you get one in good health and one that is friendly.
@doodieman74 so you would not want to know what to look for..health wise? or you dont care if the bird your about to buy is hand raised or not? well its not rocket science to me that your not the brightest crayon in the box..maybe your philosophy would work with buying a rat..but a bird come on man.... really??
@NuteBoycdxx not for the white ones. The grey ones yes. Also you can tell its a female by the stripes on her tail feathers and by the sound of her chirp.
you guys are stupid, he`s doing the ladder thing because the bird is about to jump off, so if you guys dont know what you`re talking about, don`t bothering commenting.
@EscaladeGurl Um.....Sorry for the "duh" moment here, but that bird is NOT about to leap off his hand -- a bird that was preparing to jump would spread it's wings and bob side to side. The cockatiel is clearly attacking his fingers, not just "testing" to step up. Birds are not like hamsters or rats or other animals that "run"; they'll happily sit if you leave them the heck alone.
Also, a broken blood feather would KILL a cockatiel if it was not treated immediately. They'd bleed out. FYI.
@IBPPinkPenguin did I ask you to respond to me? I didnt ASK you anything, you dont know ANYTHING. So shut up, I also didnt ask when a bird has a broken feather, so fuck off bitch.
@EscaladeGurl The penguin is right though. The bird wasn't about to jump off. Tho it does prevent them from jumping onto him to crawl up his shoulder but she wasn't giving indication that she was going to do that. She was however giving indication that shes irritated from having to step up so much. They wear out from that pretty easily and shes also no comfortable around his hands.
@IBPPinkPenguin correct. That bird was at some point testing the finger but then after a while became irritated from being forced to step up and perch. It actually wears them out after a little while and he apparently doesn't know this and you can tell she is uncomfortable around his hands thats why she nips at the fingers like that to warn him to keep them away.
OR! you can go in a store ask can i buy a cockatiel then they say sure then they grab one and you give them like 70 bucks wow thats hard it doesnt take 2:38!!!
mine chose me. he climbed up on my hand and arm, sat on my shoulder and didn't move. he did nip at my ear lightly and that told me SOLD. he's by little buddy still and i take him for car rides and outside, wings clipped of course.
this is to everyone looking to buy a cockatiel: adopt one!!!!! alot of people think that just dogs sn cats are at shelters, but theres lots of other animals in need of a good home.
Buy from a breeder if you want a good one. Pet stores also don't warn you not to get them addicted to seed diets! I bought mine from a pet store owner who was a breeder and I trusted her! Kept the bird for 9 years until her liver failed. Greatest pet ever!
Go to a breeder NOT a pet store! I got my cockatiel from a breeder who loves cockatiels and is hesitant to sell hers. It took a lot of determination to get her to sell to me ($100) but it was worth it. She is more cuddly and affectionate then my dog. She never bites and I constantly pet and touch her with no problem. When I'm lying in bed watching tv she cuddles close to my face and naps.
To be clear, healthy cockatiels DO sometimes sit around lethargically, puffed up. It's called taking a nap. :) When I see them in the pet store, it's usually early afternoon, which is when they (and mine) puff up, turn their heads into their backs, and doze.
hi i am going to buy a cockatiel soon hopefully and would like to know what time i should feed them how many times a day i should feed them and what is safe for them to eat and are pellets neccesary or is it not? please reply and give a step by step guide of possible
@kader3kad You should feed your bird in the morning after the sun comes up, not at night as birds are not nocternal. BIrds can eat just about anything (no avicado though, or the obvious things like over processed foods, food with lots of salt/sugar, caffeen, ect) Pellets are a better option as they are more ballenced then seeds and will provide your bird with all the vitamins it will need to live a long happy and healthy life.
@Turdbuckethat I might buy one form th local pet store and she hand raises them or she gets them from breeders that will hand raise them and she sells them cheap. So there is stores out there but they are hard to find
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!
I can not decide wether to buy a parakeet or a cacatoo or whatever this bird is called! Please tell me which is beter!

HikaruYamamoto 8 months ago
Its biting him because it dosn't want to be held by chubaka

this is to everyone looking to buy a cockatiel: adopt one!!!!! alot of people think that just dogs sn cats are at shelters, but theres lots of other animals in need of a good home.
LittleMissSuperGirl7 10 months ago
Buy from a breeder if you want a good one. Pet stores also don't warn you not to get them addicted to seed diets! I bought mine from a pet store owner who was a breeder and I trusted her! Kept the bird for 9 years until her liver failed. Greatest pet ever!

You don't BUY Cockatiels. You STEAL THEM FROM TEH STREETZ!
Totokorquil 10 months ago 3
Go to a breeder NOT a pet store! I got my cockatiel from a breeder who loves cockatiels and is hesitant to sell hers. It took a lot of determination to get her to sell to me ($100) but it was worth it. She is more cuddly and affectionate then my dog. She never bites and I constantly pet and touch her with no problem. When I'm lying in bed watching tv she cuddles close to my face and naps.
MrCricket2006 10 months ago
no if u buy it from a breeder they r normal and hand tamed
PrettyHermitCrab 11 months ago
how much are they?
biggestpetshopfan 11 months ago
To be clear, healthy cockatiels DO sometimes sit around lethargically, puffed up. It's called taking a nap. :) When I see them in the pet store, it's usually early afternoon, which is when they (and mine) puff up, turn their heads into their backs, and doze.

hi i am going to buy a cockatiel soon hopefully and would like to know what time i should feed them how many times a day i should feed them and what is safe for them to eat and are pellets neccesary or is it not? please reply and give a step by step guide of possible
kader3kad 1 year ago
@kader3kad You should feed your bird in the morning after the sun comes up, not at night as birds are not nocternal. BIrds can eat just about anything (no avicado though, or the obvious things like over processed foods, food with lots of salt/sugar, caffeen, ect) Pellets are a better option as they are more ballenced then seeds and will provide your bird with all the vitamins it will need to live a long happy and healthy life.

Show me a pet store that sells hand raised tiels and I'll buy one. Most pet stores sell parent raised tiels which are very hard to tame.
Turdbuckethat 1 year ago
@Turdbuckethat I might buy one form th local pet store and she hand raises them or she gets them from breeders that will hand raise them and she sells them cheap. So there is stores out there but they are hard to find
