  • " but that anchor chain's a fetter"......pure poetry!!

  • IMHO one of Stan's finest work...gives me chills!

  • my dad shared stans music with me when I was little and now I can show my boys what good music is....... brings happy tears to my eys

  • This is my daughters favorite song. She now has a son. It's my favorite too. It gives old married men a nice warm feeling having been old fashioned enough to appreciate a good woman and our children. This is a perspective I'm sure Stan was imparting with this song. There is no more to be said and no better way to say it. Thank God Stan Rogers spent time on earth to bring so much joy and understanding of life. Check House of Orange for a real statement of what people feel but don't say

  • @fps44 "...Stan....(brought) understanding of life." Beautiful analysis. Just beautiful.

  • This song takes my breath away each time I hear it , it's probably Stan's most beautiful song and his most melodic piece of music . The sound of Garnet's various guitars and the 12 string guitar in the background is simply beautiful .

  • Stan's wife said , this song explains the dichotomy of Stan's life --He loved being on the road but , he also loved being at home with his wife & son . We , all , have suffered a huge loss in our collective lives with Stan being with the angels now . Rest in Peace Stan

  • Thank God for U Tube , youve given me so much pleasure in bringing the most wonderful Stan Rogers music into my life. I will be eternally grateful. Graham from the Isle of Man

  • So many reasons to love this song; too few characters to list them all... it's astounding what happens when such an insight into life and such instinct for making music come together.

I'd love to upload some of Stan's music to listen to at work, but am afraid to do it because of the temptation to break into tears - or sing along, depending on which song it is...

  • i really wish he didnt went back in the plane even though it was to rescue peoples :/

  • that's sad. so beautiful.

  • I remember singing this driving back from the JR Hospital in Oxford on 1st October 1993 & yes my wife had just given me son, second son! All soo long ago, in fact he is taking his driving test today! But still a favorite song. Good luck with you test Matthew, who knows in years to come you may come across this comment!

  • After so many years still bringing tears to my eyes...

  • Undoubtedly one of Stan's greatest songs -- Lock Keeper --breathtaking and magnificent

  • i'm 23, listen to mostly metal/rock music, but stan has had a huge impact on my life. truly a great talent. wish i could have gotten to meet him and shake his hand. he's very missed.

  • Check out Gorka's excellent cover - same baritone, wonderful guitar.

  • @DEProf06 Sorry, Gorka doesn't hold a candle.

  • The song was also a metaphor for Stan's life in that he loved singing and touring and that meant him being away from his family. In this context, the words are even more poignant. A great, great song.

  • I don't know you, but Stan Rogers has influenced my life for over thirty years. His song sang loud. TheRoots. nobody said it better

  • What a golden voice!!! This man was more talented than any 10 modern singers put together!!

  • I have the "remembering Stan Rogers" an East Coast Tribute CD. It is truly a jewel in my music collection. Recorded at the Rebecca Cohn in 1995. when I heard it for the first time, I knew I had to buy it, it might by difficult to find but worth the search.

  • Sorry if I'm wrong but the music of Stan Rogers, to me, seems to have the same size as the paintings of Joseph Mallord William Turner (Inglês Romantic Painter, 1775-1851).

(excuse my english - I live in south of Brazil

  • @mannalert Your English is fine.

  • Breathtaking!

  • wow what a voice another life cut way to short

  • I've never been east, but stan has a way of taking me to the coast. Something my blood longs for. I feel "home" in his voice.

  • @brantfordbelle Come home my friend

  • @brantfordbelle " 'home' in his voice" is a truly beautiful expression.

  • @brantfordbelle You should go! I went to Newfoundland for a week, and it convinced me that I want to live on the East coast for the rest of my life, if I am so fortunate.

  • Is there any chance you'll be putting up Harris and the Mare?

It's my favorite Stan Rogers song, and I'm shocked that it's nowhere to be found on Youtube.

  • @bartleby543 I agree! Harris and he Mare is the best Stan Rogers song and can't believe its not here! It would be great if someone could put it up.

  • just heard him for the first time, wow, what have i been missing!

  • Possibly my favorite Stan Rogers song . He wasn't ashamed of tenderness, as many men are. And his vivid, rich imagery - fettered to foam (!), which = the sea but also endless hookups.

Truly an anthem for loyal husbands everywhere.

  • WHAT a voice!!! Beats 99.999 of the popular singers of these decadent times for certain. I could listen to Stan all day - and be healthier and wiser for it!!

  • Just stunning. I too remember John Wright singing this with a passion. Also another who has passed on, my late friend Mike Hand from Llandudno, who was a great Stan Rogers fan and sang his songs extremely well. Sadly missed all. But thanks for uploading this and making me cry a little....

  • If I could thumbs-up this page eleventy-thousand times over, I would. Brings a tear to my eye. <3

  • Sweet merciful little naked cherub wings... i can't believe I haven't played this song in years........ Thank you!!

  • nice version but not a patch on John Wrights' rendition.

  • @alexairlie

John Wright took a beautiful song and reinterpeted it into something beautiful. A sadness for the loss of two great artists.

  • @alexairlie But, this is THE version. It's not "nice", it's breathtaking. And it's his.

  • {AWESOME SONG} I also love to hear my Grandson singing it!!

  • One of my favorite songs by Stan. Such an emotional account of an interaction between one who stayed and one who went away - two worlds apart.

  • In this one the stationary lock-keeper is asked why he stays on land. He sings of why he chose home over the supposedly free life of the visiting sailor. I'm always amply rewarded when I sit back and truly listen to another Stan Rogers song.

  • Each one of his songs was a short story. Beautiful.

  • been listening to Stans music since before I was born, its still my favorite. He was a musical magician, on the level of Beethoven, Bach and Chopin.

  • @tkbywatr Cool...........Agreed.

  • Speechless.

  • One of my abolute favorites.... so hard to pick a favorite of Stans though. All his songs are amazing!!!

  • id solve it with a top six, no 7, no 8, damn your write

  • Classic song from my favourite album, his last. He was getting better and better all the time. If he had lived longer Stan would have been an international superstar to say the least.

  • a beautiful song. thanks for uploading.
