This is my daughters favorite song. She now has a son. It's my favorite too. It gives old married men a nice warm feeling having been old fashioned enough to appreciate a good woman and our children. This is a perspective I'm sure Stan was imparting with this song. There is no more to be said and no better way to say it. Thank God Stan Rogers spent time on earth to bring so much joy and understanding of life. Check House of Orange for a real statement of what people feel but don't say
This song takes my breath away each time I hear it , it's probably Stan's most beautiful song and his most melodic piece of music . The sound of Garnet's various guitars and the 12 string guitar in the background is simply beautiful .
Stan's wife said , this song explains the dichotomy of Stan's life --He loved being on the road but , he also loved being at home with his wife & son . We , all , have suffered a huge loss in our collective lives with Stan being with the angels now . Rest in Peace Stan
Thank God for U Tube , youve given me so much pleasure in bringing the most wonderful Stan Rogers music into my life. I will be eternally grateful. Graham from the Isle of Man
So many reasons to love this song; too few characters to list them all... it's astounding what happens when such an insight into life and such instinct for making music come together.
I'd love to upload some of Stan's music to listen to at work, but am afraid to do it because of the temptation to break into tears - or sing along, depending on which song it is...
I remember singing this driving back from the JR Hospital in Oxford on 1st October 1993 & yes my wife had just given me son, second son! All soo long ago, in fact he is taking his driving test today! But still a favorite song. Good luck with you test Matthew, who knows in years to come you may come across this comment!
i'm 23, listen to mostly metal/rock music, but stan has had a huge impact on my life. truly a great talent. wish i could have gotten to meet him and shake his hand. he's very missed.
The song was also a metaphor for Stan's life in that he loved singing and touring and that meant him being away from his family. In this context, the words are even more poignant. A great, great song.
I have the "remembering Stan Rogers" an East Coast Tribute CD. It is truly a jewel in my music collection. Recorded at the Rebecca Cohn in 1995. when I heard it for the first time, I knew I had to buy it, it might by difficult to find but worth the search.
Sorry if I'm wrong but the music of Stan Rogers, to me, seems to have the same size as the paintings of Joseph Mallord William Turner (Inglês Romantic Painter, 1775-1851).
@brantfordbelle You should go! I went to Newfoundland for a week, and it convinced me that I want to live on the East coast for the rest of my life, if I am so fortunate.
Possibly my favorite Stan Rogers song . He wasn't ashamed of tenderness, as many men are. And his vivid, rich imagery - fettered to foam (!), which = the sea but also endless hookups.
WHAT a voice!!! Beats 99.999 of the popular singers of these decadent times for certain. I could listen to Stan all day - and be healthier and wiser for it!!
Just stunning. I too remember John Wright singing this with a passion. Also another who has passed on, my late friend Mike Hand from Llandudno, who was a great Stan Rogers fan and sang his songs extremely well. Sadly missed all. But thanks for uploading this and making me cry a little....
In this one the stationary lock-keeper is asked why he stays on land. He sings of why he chose home over the supposedly free life of the visiting sailor. I'm always amply rewarded when I sit back and truly listen to another Stan Rogers song.
Classic song from my favourite album, his last. He was getting better and better all the time. If he had lived longer Stan would have been an international superstar to say the least.
" but that anchor chain's a fetter"......pure poetry!!

Is there any chance you'll be putting up Harris and the Mare?
It's my favorite Stan Rogers song, and I'm shocked that it's nowhere to be found on Youtube.

@bartleby543 I agree! Harris and he Mare is the best Stan Rogers song and can't believe its not here! It would be great if someone could put it up.

John Wright took a beautiful song and reinterpeted it into something beautiful. A sadness for the loss of two great artists.

One of my favorite songs by Stan. Such an emotional account of an interaction between one who stayed and one who went away - two worlds apart.
