How would any other dual-prop aircraft or helicopter cope in a similar situation? I imagine that in forward flight configuration it can continue (albeit limping) as any other dual-prop can, in VTOL configuration, who knows.
At any rate, SEAD operations are always carried out in areas where troop-transporting or attack aircraft are in operation, and it no doubt possesses/will possess IR countermeasures of its own.
@lazyhl1994 Keep in mind that they were pretty close before it got loud, and also remember that noise exponentially decreases over distance. They didn't reference what distance the Osprey was at, or what they test noise level at - or which helicopter they were comparing it to. Just remember that Future Weapons just does brief overviews - not all the details.
Why props?....why not ducted fans like the Harrier or like the new F-35? Then it could take-off or land in either mode. It seems like they just couldn't let go of the helicopter features...but are they needed?
@JetMechMA I believe I can answer this, the turbine engines in the Osprey are interconnected, so if one fails, the other turbine can still drive both blades. If you have a jet engine, and one fails the aircraft will flip over and people will die. This aircraft can glide if both engines fails, but it´s autorotation capabilities are very limited and below 1600 feet in hover mode, you are shit outta luck...
this thing is also the most dangourous aircraft in the us military. They can make all the changes they want the fact still remain that its base design makes it very easy to lose control if not traveling at the proper angles.
What happens in combat when someone shoots one of the engines or props? The props are too big to land like an airplane in case of engine failure, although I would assume some sort of auto-rotation would assist, and having a prop shot up would also result in the inability to land vertically exposing the same weakness as a helicopter's tail rotor. I suppose it wouldn't be worse than a helicopter in that situation, but it doesn't look like it has the wing area to land like a plane.
@travelbytommy It can land like an airplane, and in fact it can fly in airplane mode with one prop inoperative. When landing in such a scenario, the props are designed to 'broom straw' when they strike the ground, so the pieces don't penetrate the fuselage. I have heard that it can actually climb with one propeller working when its in airplane mode.
the osprey cannot auto-rotate, however if an engine fails the other engine can pick up the slack and deliver power to the failed engine via the interconnecting driveshaft system.
They construct the Mv-22's in my hometown of Amarillo texas :D the plant is next to the airport and they fly around the city allot for testing oh ya fun fact they also made the UH-1 "huey" in amarillo (Bell is in amarillo lol )
It's awesome. Great for quick deployments not just for Special Operations use but it can be used for USMC fast deployments. Shows another perfect example for deploying USMC MEU(SOC) units quicker onto the battlefield and fast deployment. MV-22 Osprey kicks #%&. Hopefully another version of a VTOL transport will be with jet engines in the future like around 2014. Hopefully. Gotta give credit to these engineers who created it. Congrats to them.
Also I think, that If you want a special forces operation or a surprise attack, you need something quick, swift and silence. This was just has the first one.
they say its 75% quieter than a helo, but that does not sound quite right. we've got an airforce base nearby, and they've recently been flying them around our development. they're actually a lot louder than the blackhawks they used to fly.
It can perform a roll on landing with the nacelles at about a 45 degree angle, so basically like a regular plane there is a video on here of them landing like a plane the video is by ospreymech, just type that in. Comparing this to a harrier isnt a very fair comparison, the harrier is much smaller and has a way different function. Harriers are awesome though.
true... but a big deal is made out of the V22's VTOL capabilities when it wasn't the first aircraft to have them. to me, the Harrier is a far more impressive piece of machinery- it uses jets instead of rotors, i mean, that's pretty cool.
hey ppl.. can this thing do a normal landing like an airplane??... seems to me the rotors stick out too much beneath the fuselage to do that.. so if the nacelles got stuck in airplane mode, its curtains for the plane right?.. the crew could prob eject..
they are getting a lot of publicity nowadays, in movies and shit. and yeah, they aren't as good as a heli or a plane, so they aren't specialized. that's the idea- a long-ranged versatile VTOL transport. ad they aren't the only VTOL plane, there are Harrier jump-jets as well.
Actually, the Osprey is able to make a smooth, but rushed landing with one engine out because of driveshafts running from one nacelle to the other, so that both rotors can be driven off of one engine. It does need more than one .30 cal though...
True, it may be mostly a transport, but it does need better armaments, like the weapons found on an Apache or Cobra. I'm going into the MArines to become a pilot of one of those.
I'm no airplane tech but I am a diesel tech. If ANY vehicle loses 50% of it's power it's toast especially aircraft. Not to mention that it will be quite difficult to make an emergency landing if it's in Heli mode.
Man id love to fly one of those they look badass, I hope they have fixxed all the issues and all. I love the large Blades they got on it looks so fucking badass.

You wouldnt be able to mount anything under the wings or else youd shoot through those massive proprotors in fwd flight and a side mounted gun would likely shoot the nacells when hovering. Belly mounted minigun is in the works but keep in mind, its already got a guy sitting on the ramp with a machine gun to cover troop egress. Weight is an issue too.

noise very much depens on form, shape and relative angle of the rotor blades to the other rotor blades
