  • I completely agree with you. This movie sucks.

  • Suspiria isn't the most intellectual film ever and while it is one of my favourite films of all time, I do think it's a tad overrated as the "scariest horror movie ever". Nonetheless, it is a technological marvel and one of the most unique horror films out there which is why people consider it a classic. I also think Jessica Harper was really good in this!

  • Love your reviews man, and I can see why one might not "get" Suspiria or many of Argento's films for that matter, and to each their own. Argento's work is more focused on atmosphere (you noted the color palates, and the camera work.) much of his work is very surreal and doesn't really stick to any sort of linear story line. it doesn't click for some people. I love it though, and this movie still scares the crap out of me! :-D Maybe check out Deep Red, or Opera. Might like those better.

  • I think it's great that someone young like yourself is curious about the old movies. I am 39 and never heard of Argento or Suspiria till a few days ago. Funny thing is I saw the trailer with the skull-face woman putting the flower in her hair and I remember the commercial freaked me out as a kid. I saw David Lynch's "Eraserhead" a few years ago and I see your point about these movies, but they were intended for an off-beat audience that was not as over-saturated with imagery as we are today.

  • You refer to "The Exorcist & "Psycho" as movies you get but don't get "Suspiria" might have something to do w/ "Suspiria" is done by a Italian director not from a Hollywood main stream perspective.

Argento has a art film take on his movies over all.

  • The fact that Suspiria is a classic, i think, it's because of the beauty of the film. More than a good movie , it's visually stunning.

  • The movies good because it doesn't make sense, if that makes sense.

In Italian movies, the directors don't try to create something that the audience can relate to, they do something that they come up with themselves. If you appreciate the movie from the cinematography, then it's an A+ film.

If you rent the film "Tenebre" it's more story based, and Dario Argento directed it.

  • there is no need to review this film it is the most horryifying film of all time, you are a nigger for actually thinking that your opinion holds water against one of the greatest films of all time directed by one of the greatest film directors of all time

david lynch owes his life to Dario and so should you

go die you napoleon dynamyte wannabe

  • cool, racist.

  • @durden85 how am i a racist for calling you a dumbass?

  • "you are a nigger for actually thinking that your opinion holds water"

you sound like a delightful human being.

  • @durden85 niggers come in all colors because nigger means dumbass (hint check chris rock. i love black people but i hate niggers)

again answer me you napoleon dynamyite wannabe who has NO idea of what is a good horror film or bad especially when you insulted one of the GREATEST horror classics EVER and proably think that scary movie two is better than this. how am i racist for calling you a dumbass?

  • I don't know why I'm responding to you. I think you're ignorant for using the "n" word so freely, for calling me a "napolean dynamite wannabe", and for thinking that I'm jumping at the opportunity to defend myself and my opinion to someone who insults me with nothing pleasant or valid to say. I don't have to defend my opinion to you. It's a film that I didn't personally enjoy as much as I had hoped. That's great that you absolutely love it. I didn't. It's just a difference of opinion.

  • @durden85 ignorant says the guy who did not read the meaning of the term nigger.

nothing valid? im pointing out how your a niggger(aka DUMBASS (i put that in caps cause you cannot read)

you did not personally enjoy it becuase to you your idea of horror is shit like scary movie two or some bs like i know what you did last summer just admit it. because if you truly were a horror fan you would not insult one of the greatest minds in horror EVER.

  • @Panditha666 You certainly sound enlightened on the wide world of the English language. You would have to be a true dumbass to not know someone is going to assume you are racist when using the word "nigger". You sound like a fucking child. Whether or not the film was any good you need to stop riding Argento's dick so hard.

  • You should watch it again, being careful to observe environment, especially height levels.

  • Ok, sorry for answer too late (work). What makes "Suspiria" that classic is not the establishment, but the style. Is experimental in the form. rather than the content. The plot is very simple. Argento slightly refused to make a concious story to make it purely creepy looking (the screetchy colored photography, the Loud soundtrack, the M. C Escher-style decor). I'm saying this as a fan of the movie (just like with "Evil Dead" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre ('74)". I'm from Mexico, BTW :)

  • I don't put Suspiria in with other horror films. It's been drawn up from your unconscious, a bit like Eraserhead.

The ballet school is based in Freiburg, Freud's home town.

  • Man,

I've got to disagree with your review. Go see it in the cinema with good stereo sound. The Goblin soundtrack is more essential than the script.

Everything thing is overdone in this film. It's supposed to be like a lurid nightmare, a traditional, nasty Grimm's fairytale. The dialogue is dreamlike, the ending is supposed to be chaos, like a dream ending before you wake.

  • the colors music and story is great.

  • "I don't get it!" - Best endorsement ever.

  • I agree with you 100%. I don't get why this movie is so popular. Besides the brilliant cinematography, the movie is broken. The acting is so stiff, yet over-dramatic (the scene where Suzy passes out in the studio for example). I can forgive the murder scenes for looking fake (it was the 70's after all), but they must have known then that it didn't look good. So why go out of your way to shoot the scenes in such close detail? This movie doesn't know what it is: a B-horror flick, or a piece of art

  • The popularity is because is a flick that plays straight more with the form that the content, including that "silly and over dramatic moments" which includes, as the same with the cinematography and the music, in a similar context that "Halloween" had.

Now today is considered by many people that recognize the real artistic merits in the film form, seeing in the film more than a scary movie not well counted

  • That... and the fact that the blood itself was intended to be that... it's a horror fairy tale!

  • The film has it's problems. One thing you left out is that characters are introduced and then completely dissapear with no explanation.

The film to me is like a nightmare. It doesn't make too much sense but it's scary anyway.

  • The thing is here- IT'S GOOD TO PILE ON MORE than ONE genre into a movie. It makes the movie a lot more interesting. I love movies that are multi genre.

  • yes that is true indeed... but what was about is that Suspiria became as a "Wizard of Oz" idea, Horror Fantasy, that's just it...

  • The problem with the dialog is that the movie was originally written with elementary school aged kids in mind. But Dario then changed his mind saying that having little kids in that situation would be too much. He decided to cast twentysomethings in their place...........but much of the original dialog was kept! The best example was the scene where Olga was making fun of Suzy and Sara's names which resulted in Sara sticking her tongue at Olga like a little child while Olga hissed at her.

  • I think it also adds to the surreal atmosphere. You just feel that things are a bit off, and whacky.

Personally, to me it's irritating watching the films of today feel there's a need for perpetual witty dialog. In both movies and sit-coms. I'd rather listen to a bunch of elementary school kids sometimes.

  • listening to you i know that you didn't like this film... i enjoyed Suspiria a lot, but i would say that "Deep Red" had some more action, maybe you would like

  • hey durden85, if you don´t get this, try Inferno, it gonna made you more clueless, but for me is a great movie, is different from other movies really

  • If you didn't like this, I wouldn't recommend that you get any other Giallo style movies from directors such as Lucio Fulci, Mario Bava or Dario Argento.

The dialog is one of those things that just kind of got lost in translation... literally. This would have been written and acted in Italian, so if the dialog comes across as "cardboard", it has a lot to do with translating from Italian to English and then of course, the English language track was dubbed.

  • Your are certainly entitled to your opinion, and you just didn't like this film, and you stated your case intelligently. I don't think anyone needs to convince you to like it.

The Giallo genre of film is kind of weird, strange things happen for no apparent reason... I guess we would all "get it" if we Itallian...

A great example is a film by Lucio Fulci called "The Beyond". I love this movie, but I don't know why... there are lots of strange occurances in it that don't really make sense.
