I just applaud the dude on his forthrightness and willingness to take a chance lyrically, even though the pictures he painted were (and definitely are now!) unpopular. He was telling stories, and they were interesting. Today, he wouldn't be allowed to voice those viewpoints, even though his contemporaries would be free to espouse all the misogyny and sexually explicit content they want! Sad.
What I loved about him (apart from the obvious talents) was his willingness to explore some rather dark, definitely non-politically-correct subject matter! In "Jamie" he writes as an obsessed character, reminiscent of the even darker "I Just Can't Get Over Loving You," in which the narrative is that of a stalker! And then in 1985, "Girls Are More Fun," spoke to the gay community, affirming that yes, heterosexuality is the way to go.
Hey cy, I actually found the episode from 1982 where Ray was performing alongside Sister Sledge. The episode wasn't actually that bad, now that I was able to see it again. Unfortunately Cy, I don't have the capability of posting that episode on youtube, but if you look it up on ebay or google, there's a strong possbility that someone who may have recorded that episode last summer, might be selling it along with some additional old school episodes on ebay!
The dancers just briefly danced to the song from Ray, then Don started talking, which then segued into a performance from Donna Summer. The other episode I recorded (I don't know if I can find it), was this one:
Season 11, Episode 22: Sister Sledge/Ray Parker Jr.
Original Air Date—1982
I might have recorded over it (it was a average episode, but you might like it, if you watched it). Ray performed two songs: "The Other Woman" and "Streetlove".
Well on this actual video that I recorded, they only played the song in the background,I think Don Cornelius was talking in the background about to say what was coming up later in the show (I think Donna Summer came on stage to perform "Supernatural Love" right after "Jamie" went off)
But I instantly recognized ray's voice from a previous episode of soul train I recorded some time last year (2007) that came on television. Also I recognized his voice due to the ghost busters song he did as well.
I just heard this song for the first time(i'm only 23 yrs. old)on a best of soul train episode that aired a couple of weeks ago on my network tv here in atlanta from dec. 1984 (donna summer/the staples singers). It has that super early 80's sound, and it kind of sounds cheesy in certain aspects, but I can't lie though, it's kind of groovy. cool song, but nowhere near his ghostbusters song, lol1 peace everyone!!!
Hi all can anyone tell me if they have Ray's song called "OLD FASHIONED LOVE" Ive looked high n low on here & for the life of me I cant seem to find it would be much appreciated its such an awesome song my gf & I kept that with us when we 1st met that was 16yrs ago since then we have never heard it since I would love to find it again moreso for her - Cheerz
I could stay here all day listening to these great songs that somehow don't make "The Best of" compilations and hardly ever play on the radio (no pun intended). Ah, but our hearts and our brains remember and enjoy them even after 20 years. Thanks to victornewman06 and all the other treasure hunters who share their finds with us.
@victornewman06 You used to have a gf name Jamie? The reason why asked because there is a girl I like & her name is Jamie too I really care about her if your wondering
