@umhumgum when you "scream" it's partially to intimidate the oponent but it also serves to force an exhalation of air after your strike. when you are kicked after a kip ir a scream, it much harder to get winded then if you have your lungs full of air.

@umhumgum To answer your question the "Scream" is called a kiai, ki hap, or several other things based on style, national origin, etc. Basically it's a show of spirit, emphasis, and in more practical terms: a way of getting air out of the body to avoid being winded if you get hit in a fight, a way of tensing the body to produce extra power, and a way of increasing one's focus. As for it being graded, that really depends on the organization's rules and the judges.

@umhumgum in martial arts screaming is done for a number of reasons. one is that screaming tightens your abdominals, and this gives you tighter, more concise movements. It also FORCES you to breathe after, so it helps you maintain your breath during an intense performance or fight. the final reasons are that in real life situations, it could potentially scare an attacker.

It amazes me how disrespect some american people are, you watch a boxing match hosted in LA and all you hear is the constant thrum of people yelling out what the people boxing are doing wrong, even though they have little knowledge themselves. Where as you watch a boxing match in a country like Japan you hear little noise because they respect the fighters. Although it doesnt really apply here as people are only yelling out their support it would still be very disteacting.
