Plenty of Columbia students are able to attend only through the financial assistance of the school and others and the assumption of a large amount of personal debt. While there is certainly a degree of academic snobbery, financial/class snobbery is really not apparent. I know of students who have escaped civil war in their third world countries of origin and now attend the school. You're ignorant.

These students know nothing about education, which means giving both yourself and others the right to hear opposing arguments so people can make their own minds up.
That "protest" is probably one of the most un-American thing I've ever seen. It made those students look and sound like animals, not rational, thinking human beings. Statistically the areas with the highest rates of college attendance are also the most liberal. I will never say that thier are not intelligent conservatives or that qualified conservatives shouldn't be allowed, (in fact they should be encouraged) to teach. However amoung intellectuals there is a disproportionate amount of liberals whichever way you cut it. Universities are also private institutions and if you feel Columbia is too liberal then don't send your children there.

I dispute two premises of your question. "Paramilitary" connotes something inaccurate, since they do not carry weapons. "Taking the law into their own hands" suggests usurping regular law enforcement. This group acts in support of the Border Patrol. Their goal is to observe the border and alert the BP rather than to apprehend those crossing the border illegally; they are more like a neighborhood watch group than "paramilitary". As long as that doesn't change, I support them.

Plenty of Columbia students are able to attend only through the financial assistance of the school and others and the assumption of a large amount of personal debt. While there is certainly a degree of academic snobbery, financial/class snobbery is really not apparent. I know of students who have escaped civil war in their third world countries of origin and now attend the school. You're ignorant.

relar, the reason you often see older people as conservatives is two pronged. the first part is that as people get older, they are required to spend more time raising a family and working to support it, which takes time away from them being activist. the second is that its mostly the older generation, not the middle or the younger, that is conservative because of the time they were born.

Statistically the areas with the highest rates of college attendance are also the most liberal. I will never say that thier are not intelligent conservatives or that qualified conservatives shouldn't be allowed, (in fact they should be encouraged) to teach. However amoung intellectuals there is a disproportionate amount of liberals whichever way you cut it. Universities are also private institutions and if you feel Columbia is too liberal then don't send your children there.

I dispute two premises of your question. "Paramilitary" connotes something inaccurate, since they do not carry weapons. "Taking the law into their own hands" suggests usurping regular law enforcement. This group acts in support of the Border Patrol. Their goal is to observe the border and alert the BP rather than to apprehend those crossing the border illegally; they are more like a neighborhood watch group than "paramilitary". As long as that doesn't change, I support them.

Thanks for the dialog, Simon. It is good. Full disclosure: I work for a German company in a N.Amer. plant. Half our team is from Jalisco and Zacatecas (Mexican states). I am glad my country still draws people and strongly support legal immigration. But guests or new family members should enter through the front door. We cannot admit more than we can assimilate in a given period. Someone who stood in line and followed the rules to get in should oppose those who go around the rules (cheat).
