I have the same question as buukkoo. Im an amateur and im really curious about the proper way to compress highs and mids and lows and how those methods differ. I know its different for every track, but is there some sort of generalization that can be made about what is appropriate for the attack and release on the compression of each band?
Hi Daniel, love your videos. Just wondering if similar mastering settings using Ozone 4 would be a good starting point for any musical genre e.g. jazz!
hey quick question to anyone!! on the multiband compression. should i compress all of the bands like the the low mid, high mid,and high..or just the low..like he did here?
@buukkoo Experiment, compress the highs/mids as well as the lows, I apologise if I'm not that helpful, but Mastering is whatever sounds good. However, for it too sound good it has to obviously work, and for it too work you have had to have experimented to achieve the correct formula (compression of highs/mids/lows, EQ etc.). So basically Im telling you to try everything! or that mastering is just like Mathematics being recycled by a constant boring formula... you pick
Wow, this was the most detailed tutorial for Ozone compression that I've seen, and definitely the most visually well done. So easy to see everything you're doing. Thanks!
quick question hoping @dubstop can answer for me...whenever I export my finished songs using some basic built-in devices, my file always ends up being upwards to 45MB....what is going on with this and how can I fix it??? thanks to anyone who responds seriously! :D
@BuildingCastlesMusic k I'm just confused then on how to make it approriately sized...compared to, let's say any other song from iTunes or something where it's under 10mb...what do I do to make it like that?
@bigbagron He says it in this interview residentadvisor (DOT) net/feature (DOT) aspx?972 and I remember him saying either in an interview on Ustream that his favorite mastering EQ is one of the Waves. I can't remember much more specifically. Maybe what he meant was that if you're giving it to a mastering house to be mastered, you shouldn't touch the master bus with any plugins. But if you're the one doing mastering, well that's the only way to do it!
@bigbagron ...How else would you master? By manually hand-editting the waveforms? I believe what you heard was it's best not to rely on presets, not programs.
@MorrockW I'm not sure... deadmau5 had answered a question on twitter saying that when you're finished with a track, there should be no third-party plugins on the master chain.
@bigbagron Well I know deadmau5 mixes with hiss mastering chain already on the master bus, and he uses mostly the Waves plugins. So he must have meant something in a different way, or whatever. Did he answer it on Ustream or directly over twitter? I tried finding the question, because I'm in the hospital and have no better way to spend my time right now.
@MorrockW I remember he typed it. It was a long time ago, though. Pretty sure it was on Twitter, might have been on Facebook, I can't remember. Can you show me some proof of what you stated about the mastering chain and Waves?
@bigbagron Well proof about having a mastering chain can be found right here in this video, Ozone for example. Though maybe what deadmau5 meant was if you're sending a mix out to mastering, you should not have any plugins on the master bus (that will be the mastering engineer's job). When you master, you do it on a rendered track, not the master bus of the mix project. deadmau5, and a lot of new electronic artists are the exception to this rule. Just always remembe, if it sounds good, it is good
I gotta mention, sometimes in your videos it would be nice to hear the difference when you hit the "bypass" button, but the music is waaaay too low to hear anything...I know the volume needs to go down when you're talking, but just those parts need to be boosted so we can hear what you're describing.
@JBarber3d I think it's also difficult to hear because the mixes they start with are so good, they hardly need to apply anything in the mastering stage.
@MorrockW true, but not so much that...I know the differences are going to be really subtle, but the guy will be like "ok listen to this reeeally subtle difference when I push this button", and then...the overall volume goes way down.
Jesus, -3dB RMS. That is definitely not something you'd want to listen to in a club for longer than say, 15 seconds. Also some severe distortion on the kick at the end of the video btw. Not to be hating or anything but if that track was mine I'd rather master it myself. Either way thanks for the video though.
Produce or die! =P I think music theory is one of the hardest things in music. Mixing and mastering can be taught. But the language of music. @.@ retarded!

@anyname08 Why is that strange? If it's a wave file, that's completely normal.

@anyname08 It has to be an mp3 for that. Check your mixdown options and it should have the option to be mp3.

@burgerDish11 probably best to just take classes in mastering. You could learn to use this plugin in 5 minutes
on your own if you know how to master.

@T1nusk Yeah I noticed the severe distortion at the end of the tutorial. I suppose a lot of that could be down to YouTube's low quality audio though.
