Keep in mind as soon as you apply moist heat (steam) the felt will contract and "shrink" so make sure your hat is large enough to shrink a bit and still fit. Wool shrinks the most with fur the effect is less noticeable.
@CountryTroubadour That fancy machine just pushes out steam really fast... so if you have a stove top, a pot with a lid with a hole, and some water you're good to go!!!, just let the water come to a strong boil, til it starts steaming and coming out of the hole. Bring the brim up to the steam and move it back and forth to let the brim "relax" it should be fairly easy to shape after that. if you mess it, just steam it up again and do it over. careful not to make too many exaggerated creases
until you have reached a close version of the desired look you want. once you do that, make those sharp creases to give your hat some character... :) questions? message me
@nightwalker2830 ask somebody like friend if it look like the hat fit and feel, if it feels alright with the hat so it dont is to tight or loose then you have find your hat
I reshape mine with a kettle. Boil the water and use the steam coming from the spout. There's more than two ways to shape a brim--you can really do whatever you like. I prefer something more curled and rounded than what he shows here and angled from back to front.
Yo so de durango and proud dog.
I custom shaped my Atwood palm leaf hat with a large clothing steamer from Walmart. Once you reshape, you will be hooked and may tweak it at least weekly! I later ran into Dustin at the tack store and was in a tweaking mood. To get the best results, we used Dustin's "secret sauce" to set the hat. This guy really knows what he is doing, is very professional, and has a HUGE catalog of hat shapes, styles, construction, and more in his head. He is to hats what a master farrier is to horseshoes!

is there any way to shape the brim of a straw cowboy hat?
cruncher8918 3 years ago
Yep. The same way as a felt hat, steam and shape, but be careful a straw will crack.
