man, i saw this plane at an airshow, they were raising money for it to take off once more. they are big ass, awesome and loud. (i also saw take off :D)
A team of air cadets from 1122 (Marmion) Squadron ATC will be cycling 30 miles on the 12th of June, from their squadron HQ to DCAE Cosford in Shropshire to raise money for XH558 - you can help support them here! -

Nice! But...at what cost? Is it worth TWO MILLION POUNDS ANNUALLY to fly it? Vulcan Operating Co told Lottery that airshow fees would pay all costs for sustained operations. Now, we're finding out that's not true. Sorry, guys, but TWO MILLION POUNDS ANNUALLY was never gonna come from airshow fees. A blind man couldda seen that before you started. I seem to recall the RAF retired it because, aside from being old, it was also EXPENSIVE TO OPERATE. VulcantotheHANGAR!
The deterrent aspect doesn't enter into your reasoning? Had they not been there, life could have been slightly different, given the Soviet penchant for expansion. Another thing - our nukes were a defensive measure, not offensive, but thanks anyway for your "nuclear bombs were never used in a act of aggression during the service of this plane" comment. I'm sure everyone appreciates the history lesson.
This to pg200: Maybe to celebrate the fact that the nuclear bombs it was designed to drop made it possible for dicks like you to continue speaking freely - and in English. Point made?
Huh? Nuclear bombs were never used in a act of aggression during the service of this plane. "made it possible for dicks like you to continue speaking freely "
Those bombs never MADE it possible for anyone to speak freely.
A crass individual? I believe you have the exclusive on "crass", as you appear to be a sad, blinkered, obtuse (that's a synonym of crass), individual, idealist to the point of laughability, with no idea of what our armed forces did (or do today) in order to ensure that your comfortable middle-class existence remains inviolable. Now off you go, hug a tree, and leave national security to real men.
in a few years, and even today Strategic bombers are not needed due to the new updated ICBM's which are cheap to make and can get 8 times faster to their targets. Can also be quickly fitted with any type of warhead and are very hard to intercept unlike a giant bomber that can easily be shot down before it even reache's close to its target.
well Im talking about nuclear delivery. Only time a nuclear weapon will be used is for last resort or high alert use. And of cource the last resort will probably be protected by 10+ high tech SAM launchers. So bascially bombers would be usless since they would get shot down by a far run.
Bascially bombers are only good for attacking poorly armed countries with carpet bombing. But soon that will be usless too since now even poor countries are getting pretty good Anti-Air technology.
well that is true, a US MM III ICBM costs about $7,000,000 a unit. But I think it would still be used then sacrificing a $2-3 billion bomber, filled with a $2,000,000 Missile with a nuclear warhead, and about 2-3 Lives piloting the aircraft.
they 'replaced' it with the tornado. the vulcan was considdered obsolete as a high altitude bomber with the advances in soviet SAM technology so they pretty much mothballed the fleet. i still think it would have made an excellent cruise missile platform, had it been 10 years younger then it may have been used for just that because at the time of it's retirement, cruise missiles were pretty new and the upgrades would have been thought to be too expensive.
i would say give it the afterburning oylmpus engines the TSR2 should have got and with some minor aerodynamic alterations your would have had a supersonic stealthy low level attack bomber up there with the b-1
Not to be a nitpicker, but the Vulcan was (is) technically transonic, as its max speed was around decimal 92. The transonic regime extends from decimal 87 to 1.3. First ever 'lectric jet too, and could out-turn F4's and F15's at altitude. And if that isn't enough, looks-wise it's the proverbial dog's balls.
thing is the raf are a bunch of dick really they alays get rid of the best vucan sea harrier etc it seems an impossibility but hey just keep our heads up and eventually she will be up nand flying
i got an idea why don't the raf take back to vulcans for service so like the vulcans get support to stay flying and see active service because she's still advance and they take one of them to airshows for the public
Lamorock, this is not an old stupid plane, it is a reminder that britain could once build good aeroplanes which defended the u.k and helped the united states win the cold war, these were the only planes that the ussr could not intercept with their fighters, unlike the b-52. Do some research, you may be surprised at how important this plane was.
@mattmilkscows23 the Vulcan never flew sucessfully against 1200 SAMS in operation Linebacker, Xmas 1972 the most sucessful bomber campaign in aviation history
@jers59 In the 60's a 8 Vulcans sucessfully penetrated the US airdefences. Operation Skyshild - one Vulcan was intercepted the seven others got to their targets in the US and returned to base unscathed.
Thanks for the message okaaaiiiden - I'm not sure I understand you though!

Ahhh but its the cost. Granted in a full on war missiles are better for fast damage. In a long drawn out war the bomber can still be used.

I dont think the bombers are quite that much. I guess its hard to say. To quote Red Alert "Time will tell" ha ha
Th3Gr33k 2 years ago
A B-52 is about $2billion to take care off. And that is just a regular bomber. A strategic or even stealth bombr is way more.

Good pint, navnig. I always wondered why the RAF didn't make it a platform like the USA B-52 has been.

Well you could fly it low altitude which has been done with another bomber that bears the name B1.

yup true but the vulcan was subsonic, not to mention that the 1st vulcan flew around 30 years before the b1 took to the air

Was at Hurn in 1990 to see Vulcan on an extended show, the most awesome show of power short of the space shuttle.
Hope it makes it to Bournemouth for the summer airshow, didn't fly 08 when it was meant to.
Kinc34 3 years ago
There is nothing on earth that even comes close to developing the power this thing chucks out its tail pipes.
You can show all the B-52's, B1 Lancers, B2 spirits...nothing can rival the sheer presence this thing has.
