Yeah it was very common on studio records throughout the 1980s. Furthermore when I had a Yamaha DGX 202 it was one of the patches in there as well. So that's what led me to believe that's what was being used
I thought the same thing when I first heard him say "the 4". I realize now that he means the 4 in the key of Aflat major. But technically it's a five of flat7. These guys are using very little theory when they teach so it's better to just ignore what they're saying and listen to what they do.
By the way, you refer to the chord that is not part of the sacale of Ab. The progression that you are using is not based in Ab as a MAIN TONALITY. You are playing in Fm as a MAIN because you are using this progression: i-iv-V (Fm,Bbm,C, 1:38)then you go to what is call "SECONDARY DOMINANT" (Db is the 4th of Ab, but is the V (dominant) of the new key Gb (no necessary bVII).There is a lot of missing info, etc,etc....
In sec :44 you refer to "this chord takes you to the Gb maj9" as the "4th" and is WRONG. First, the chord is an extension and is Db13b9#11 and resolves to Gb because Db is the 5th of Gb (basic theory: V-I). I thing, no matter what you should have to explain this and some other stuff to REALLY help people to know to play...anyway good groovin'
Man I would love to know what notes those are. I kept pausing this clip and writing the notes as they "seem" to appear by the hand placement but I still can't get it to sound correct. *Sigh*~ Somebody help me please!! GREAT CLIP THOUGH!!
jobimboy's advice is correct. just start with the leading tones while focusing on the rhythm. this style is called playing in the pocket. some of the riffs are ahead of the beat, others behind it.
You have to brake it down by intervals, doc. I've faved it so I can look at it again. I'll git witcha an' break it down fo ya when I've completed my research.
i love groves like that! woo! lol

what exactly do you call gospel music?
Fartan117 2 years ago
more of a feel-type genre, based on devotion 2 God. original songs remakes of old hymns.

I wish I had that gift of an "ear" for the notes. Some people have it. Some don't. I'm one of them.
