  • Hearing John pick it solo I hear Steve Goodman's half of the syncopated rhythm missing. It makes me miss Steve Goodman. Great song. John and Steve were great together.

  • Ain't it the truth.

  • Wish the sound quality was much better.........

  • I don't think you understand the sarcasm. He isn't joking about someone beating their wife!

  • Love it one of my fav prine songs

  • Love John Prine, can't quite get past "beats his old lady with a rubber hose" as a cute little joke... times change.

  • @seemedlikeagoodidea I don't really think that is meant a cute little joke. Basically, the guy beats her with a rubber hose and then takes her out to dinner and buys her new clothes {as a poor attempt at an apology}. No one approves of that situation, but that's the way that the world goes 'round.

  • @time37 Well, the audience laughs, as I think they are meant to, because face it, this was written and sung in an era when spousal abuse was still thought to be kind of funny, something you could joke about. That is the way the world used to go round, but nowadays the world stops going round when that happens. I admire John Prine enough to be pretty sure he'd agree with me.

  • @time37 they're laughing about the bathtub freezing part

  • God as my witness, I loved and listened to this song for over 20 years. I just heard that it was not half an enchilada, but half an inch of water!

  • greathair,crazylicks&insanelyrics :He he .

  • he does real well all on his own out there. and that ain't easy. nope, that aint easy, but Prine, he can do that.

  • love when you see no dislikes but what can i say who could dislike it its a masterpiece

  • 0 dislikes. nuff said.

  • when a singer stays close to music and tells how it is made.. drops it live and invites you into the song... the audience are no indicators or they were spellbound or hushed. Some laughed as I did earlier in life... cried this time and hummed the words.

  • he sucks

  • @mitchlong1 and you are dumb

  • @mitchlong1 your confused haha

  • look at that ...no dislikes .

  • I saw John and Iris in Eureka Springs a few years ago......Fantastic what a showman.....

  • John Prine is the first rapper

  • I love the way that big puff of smoke rolls out at the beginning.

    God I miss the 70's.

  • GREAT SINGING AND PICKIN--5 STARS FOR A GREAT RENDITION--TY JOHN

  • john tells this same story onan interview on an earlier album. was that you?

  • BEST SING-A-LONG EVER!

  • Thank to above information I found out that John Prine is playing in Tucson at the Fox Theatre. It has not been advertised AT ALL! Tickets are almost sold out and I am PO'ed!!! Grrrrrr... Thank you for posting this.

  • Masterstroke of pure genius! Thanks for posting this

  • THATS THE WAY THE WORLD GOES AROUND--GREAT VERSION OF THIS SONG--5 STARS FOR YOU--TY SMOKEY FOR SHARING--JOHN

  • Somebody else liked that guitar picking too. Listen to the picking for "Knee Deep" by The Zac Brown Band - sounds like the same thing that John is doing here.

    And I like 'em both!

  • The tune, his finger picking is timeless...it's a sound that really sinks inside of you like it's primal, in your nature.

The other fascinating thing is that this audience so appreciates the word-smithing...that they actually clap before each chorus. Remember, they are hearing this song for the very first time, before Bruised Orange came out (I'm assuming from his intro talk).

It's a sign of how good Prine is, but also a sign that audiences just a few decades ago were just more discerning.

  • John Prine, I just wanna snuggle you and put a bow on you, in a basket, on a rainbow and keep you forever!!

  • @flyingeye108 and @omgitsher I agree I'm 17 and this music is still better than half of the stuff out there today

  • Im 12, and I love this song

  • @omgitsher98 good! I'm 14 and i love this song as well, its nice to see theres some other kids other than my friends and I who still have a good taste in music hahaha!

  • one of my all time favorite artists wish he was on the top charts he deserves it!

  • Man, what a guitar picker. Great sense of humor

  • so great to see one man and a guitar capture a crowd. not much of that now!!!!

  • @mrbatmansbabe you stole that "happy enchilada" from one of his live albums.

    its an anecdote he tells

  • great song..it had me in tears

  • Beautiful...

  • What a fabulous guitar player this man is. His playing here is just exquisite; simple but precise and joyous to listen to. I've got the bug to try and learn some of his songs!

  • I must say I love this, perfectly delightful. The man does "sing" the truth. Isn't it just the truth?! Wonderful post.

  • Loved Prine and his faboulous songs since I `d heard him the first time in 91`!! Have all of his records! These old recordings are the best I`ve ever heard !! and yes , he is in a class by himself as a singersongwriter!!!

  • How can all these people sit still.

  • 2:37 to the guy who got up and walked away: GET BACK HERE AND SIT DOWN DOUCHEBAG!

  • John is realy on top of his game here as far as his guitar playing and voice .

  • john prine is the shit

  • I remember being a little girl with my dad and him and me singing this song together in the car . "it's a half a inch of water ..." I would always say " it's a happy enchilada " it brings back good memories .

  • @MrBatmansbabe funny...he tells a story about a woman who called the song the same thing

  • wow! thanks for posting this! was there a time when this was considered 'country music"? this must have been when country music was actually good.

  • If you don't like this song ... well I reckon you get a big red nose ...

  • " Naked as the eyes of a Clown" One of the greatest lines ever written. Thank you John.

  • " Naked as the eyes of a Clown" One of the greatest line ever written. Thank you John.

  • ^Thank you -this is amazing. I love all John Prine songs!!!!!!

  • Where is this? What show?

  • @electraluxx Maybe Austin City Limits ?

  • @cabolynn Yes you are right.......Laurie

  • "It's a half an inch of water and you think you're gonna drown".....Don't sweat the small stuff, eventhough it might not seem so small at first :)

  • happy enchilada

  • there are great songwriters, then there is John Prine in a class by himself

  • Think about this... The audience is hearing this song for the first time ever and you can tell that it's already made of Gold.... God Bless John Prine

  • Was he sorry

  • What was he smoking in the beginning?

  • @TheKaizer0007 Yeh, you can see the cigarette on the headstock of his guitar.

  • Naked as the eyes of a clown! beautiful

  • The best part of a John Prine concert is when it is just him and his guitar. He is every bit as good in 2011 as he was in 1978.

  • Great upload!

  • E P I C
