AllisonTheSNLGuru and jcjh20 (and anyone else who it may concern): Could you PLEASE help me pin down when that other grocery store (opposite the Pathmark) closed? Could it have been A&P and later ShopRite? Because A&P left South Jersey in 1982 (except for Super Fresh). Or perhaps this store moved to the Super Fresh (now closed) in Pleasantville which recently closed? Then ShopRite took over the old one and later closed?
Fond memories of working @ the Hazlet NJ Bradlees 86-88. I have to laugh about when we went on strike and at the time I think I was making $4.25 and we had to go to the union meetings in Woodbridge NJ.
@ALAKA777 Yeah, I know. I went past there 2 weeks ago during my visit to Jersey. I'm wondering if they'll ever do anything with that property. I had heard WalMart was supposed to go there, but now I'm hearing the property is still for sale/lease.
@RetroVideoFan nope i remember i was like 14 years old when this store closed I was standing beside the Woodbridge,NJ store when at around 10:30 P.M. the last store closed on March 15,2001
i notice all some of the walmart bashing in this video. now im not saying i love walmart but at least it is a store and i know that if walmart would go out of bussiness everyone would be saying i miss walmart and whatever store took its place they would hate that store
I loved working for bradlees, my store was the one in west caldwell.nj. Back in 1986-87, i got most of my high school buddies to leave they other jobs so they could come work with me there, it was a blast. Site and sound was one of my dept. and loved the sunday sale with castro oil which we only had like one pallet and by 12:00 it was sold out. It was one of the nicest job i had, back in the days.
As I write this, (2-7-11) the Bradlees store in Toms River (NJ) is 90% demolished, it started on 2-2-11, and in a day or so, it will be history. The entire shopping center is going to be demolished, and a whole new Dover Mall will rise up..........yeah, I know that sounds corny.
1 other MAJOR reason they closed....you could LITERALLY return ANYTHING at any time. Shoes get returned for a full refund, THAT WERE TOTALLY WORN through, probably worn for 6 months. Bradlees merchandise also could get returned at any time, or possibly within 90 days, with no receipt. this was ridiculous. u just give somebody a full refund for defective merchandise in return that is not saleable. HELLO??? I saw this happen for a year until closing and was totally astonished
i worked at 3 different bradlees stores my senior year in HS, and just after. worked at colonia, middletown, and hazlet in shoe dept. technically, i worked for JBaker shoes, who provided the stock and rented out the space in all bradlees stores. bradlees was all white trash, the reason? i made 6.50 PER HOUR LOL!!!! & the shoe dept. MGR made 10.00 an hour!! can u belive that? almost everyone that shopped here was on welfare or food stamps, really a shitty low quality store, no wonder its closd
I Miss Bradlees, Kmart (When it was Good) and Caldors. Im From Elizabeth Nj, and i have mad memories of shopping there when i was a kid with my mom and cousins on Saturdays. Glass Case filled with old Skool Nintendo Games in the Electronics section. I remeber Always begging for a Game and finally at the End Getting Zelda or something, and then we'd all order Pretzels and red slushies or soda from the Bradlees pretzle place, and playing Ninja Turtles on the arcade machines while they cooked! :D
Hey John, I worked there too and if you were a good negotiator and contributor to the company you got rewarded so i disagree! I was always paid more than fair!
I worked at Bradlees from 1995 to 1997. I loved shopping there, but as far as working there, the pay was questionable. That said, Bradlees should be remembered for being a good place to shop. I wonder if they've done anything with the Hazlet, NJ location yet.
I used 2 love going 2 Bradlees cuz they had a pretty good toy selection. I remember being like maybe 4 or 5 (2000/2001) and my mom telling me they were closing down while she was scouring the clothing department and I was looking at a Betty Spaghetty playset and even though it (obviously) was on clearance, I still didn't get it >:( lol, great store. What a shame it had 2 go. Same with Ames and K-B Toys...
well, some closed bradlees stores were also changed to the home depot. i remembered these in union, nj, hackensack, nj, and wayne, nj. the one in hackensack was changed to the home depot. some also change to buy buy baby as well.
Ten years later there are still a handful of untouched Bradlees that just sit there vacant with the logos on them in everything...in New Jersey I believe...the Bradlees in my town became a Walmart a few years after it closed in 2001...I still fully remember what the store looked like on the inside, and I found a great aerial shot from the mid-80's at a car dealership as well that showed the old road sign as well as half the rest of the town looking wayyy different
The bradlees near me in CT have been taken over. The one is Stratford was torn down and a BJs built there. The one in shelton is a bed bath and beyond. In trumbull the Caldor was turned into a khols. I too can still remember where things were placed in those stores when I go to them
@moldymac You should drive up to Manchester sometime. The entire Parkade Plaza is vacant. The Super Stop & Shop moved a block away and the old location, along with Bradlees and every other tenant in the mall, is sealed off. On second thought, don't bother. It's really very bleak.
yeah, they never have a damn thing you went in there for. Bradless a cost a slight bit more, but chances are you got what you wanted, and without getting lost in the process
thats because wal mart is not customer friendly, which is why you have to wait in line for a half hour, they dont give a shit cause they know they will still get people to shop there cause they have the lowest prices, its sad
Hey, I was just there taking pictures and brought home a couple of pieces of the red plastic for nostalgia purposes. Is that really why it was smashed? I just figured vandals got tired of looking at something still in one piece.
Yup. Comp USA, Circuit city, numerous small businessess, car dealerships. It just a sign of the times. Shit like this always happens before a depression hits.
Anyways, I've never even heard of Bradlees. Hopefully the next generation won't forget about Circuit City, and how it took on a corporate giant like Best Buy.
Used to work at a Bradlees as a member of the early morning flow crew.
Every week day from 5am to 2:30pm, we would get to the store, unload the truck, organize the merchandise, then when the truck was fully unloaded we then proceeded to re-stock the shelves.
It was a blast! My fellow flow crew members were a joy to work with and my manager was very cool. It was one of the best times of my life, even if they only paid $6.45 an hour.
I used to go to the one in Toms River, NJ - it was off exit 82A (Route 37 East). I swear, for pretty much all of 2001, the Bradlees sign was still up in the parking lot, depsite them closing on New Year's Day.
South NJ still has a Bradlees...sort of. There's a dead Bradlees that's been closed since the late '90s, but the building is in surprisingly good shape. No graffiti, no broken windows...even the sign's intact!
I was going to ask if it was the one on Route 322 in Egg Harbor Township, but I got my answer below. That's a Foreman Mills now.
The one I used to shop at was on Route 37 East in Toms River, off of Exit 82A in the Toms River Center. It closed in late 2000-early 2001, but the sign was still up for most of 2001. I can't remember what it is now.
Actually, the vacant building is still there! Passed by it not too long ago and wondered if Bradlees was still around. Really didn't know they went out of business..
The one in Toms River Center is still vacant?! I remember it being vacant as of late 2005, but I didn't think it would still be...whoah.
The one on Route 322 in EHT was vacant for a while, and the sign was up for a few years before Foreman Mills took over the location (I for one hate Foreman Mills!). It was in the Cardiff Power Center, which is such an awful shopping center (Pathmark, a gym, and a buffet). The Karin's Curtains sign is still there...but Karin's Curtains isn't.
Yup, it's a shame that the building formally as Bradlees is still vacant. I have such fond memories walking in there so it was like taking a trip to the past when I drove by it. That old supermarket (looks like it used to be a shoprite) in the back of the center is still vacant as well. Had to be vacant as long as I remember, since the 80's maybe!
I never knew there was one in EHT where Foreman Mills is. That center is indeed shitty though. It looks more like a spawn of Pleasantville in there
I think that supermarket was an A&P, and I think it had been vacant since the late 90s.
LOL - yes, there actually was a Bradlees across from the Shore Mall at one point - I think it closed when the Toms River location closed. LOL - and it's not even in Pleasantville!!!! And the Shore Mall? Don't even get me started on the Shore Mall!
Late 90's huh? Damn, could have sworn I remember it being vacant even when I was younger, in the mid 90's at least.. There's also a vacant supermarket in Brick (i think near route 70) that has been there a long long time..
Shore Mall seems like it's dying a slow death.. I'm surprised it's still hanging in there!
I have many memories of Bradlees and Caldor growing up.Everything was relatively expensive by today's standards.I remember a 45 rpm going for $2.99.The Atari video games were like 19.99 or $29.99.I was told by older people that they NEVER had new stock. They were a good 10 years behind everything.
bradlees and caldor were the shit i used to buy madd shit from them wow caldor closed in 1999 and bradlees closed in 2000 so u can see they were pretty screwed
This brings back a lot of memories some goos, some not so good but mostly good times I had working at Bradlees store #122 in Whitehall pa 18052.we closed feb 21 1998 this makes me feel nostalgic for the good old days, if any of my former coworkers read this I hope that these last 10 years have treated you well and hears to the future to whatever it brings, take care Bill K.
I miss Bradlees. Caldor too. Remeber when stores used to have a thing called "stock" unlike Wal*Mart that only has 2 of anything on the shelf, and won't re-order somthing unless the shelf is empty. And now that the smaller discount competitors are gone, the Wal*Marts are sooo crowded. Everyones there because you get it at Wal*Mart or you don't get it at all!
They used to exist in North Carolina where I grew up, but alas they're a memory..same with Zayre. Roses (a small-sized discount store in the mid-Atlantic) used to be fairly easy to find but now they've almost entirely gone AWOL...blame the Wally empire :-(
LOL I've noticed that too..the last time I went into Roses, a couple years ago! Certainly nothing like the Roses of old; much smaller stores (what few are left, the remaining fossils) and crap stuff...not much different from Dollar General, which is more prevalent. (Heck, maybe better)
@LynolsOffice Oh, I loved, loved, loved Caldor. My husband worked there when we were in high school; he got sick of the commercial they'd always played, and I tease him by singing it, since I have a good memory, lol.
i remeber this store evrey well they were not so great there stores uslay were dark and creepy eather that or they tryed to much to look like caldor bit over all they were better then wal mart

The slowed down voices are eerie. If this commercial aired in the 70s, i would have had nightmares about it!

I feel the same pain about Caldor and Bradlees too; I used to shop at those stores back in NJ when I was a nipper.

I miss Bradlees too. :-(
They used to exist in North Carolina where I grew up, but alas they're a memory..same with Zayre. Roses (a small-sized discount store in the mid-Atlantic) used to be fairly easy to find but now they've almost entirely gone AWOL...blame the Wally empire :-(

Roses has unfortunately turned into a junk dollar store.

LOL I've noticed that too..the last time I went into Roses, a couple years ago! Certainly nothing like the Roses of old; much smaller stores (what few are left, the remaining fossils) and crap stuff...not much different from Dollar General, which is more prevalent. (Heck, maybe better)

Dollar General IS better than Roses. Totally. At least they sell name brand stuff, lol.

@LynolsOffice Oh, I loved, loved, loved Caldor. My husband worked there when we were in high school; he got sick of the commercial they'd always played, and I tease him by singing it, since I have a good memory, lol.
Stupid Wal-Mart.
