This orchestration is brilliant. I can't even begin imagine trying to orchestrate such a piece, but the melody especially is done with such imagination.
I think I found the recording you mean on amazon.com and amazon.ca. I don't know why Kocsis would want to re-orchestrate the Prélude, Forlane, Menuet and Rigaudon movements, if that is indeed what he has done. Ravel`s orchestrations can hardly be topped, I should think.
@ByzantineCalvinist If you mean Hungaroton Classic HCD 32106 your question is irrelevant. Kocsis orchestrated Fugue and Toccata only. The rest of the cycle is Ravel's own.
You won't belive it but the premiere of this piece made by Zoltan Kocsis I heard in Praha with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kocsis. Please see my videos from Praha. He conducted all pieces of the Tombeau. It was great.
Wow, I have never heard this before. This is great! I've listened to the piano version about a thousand times, but never this. I actually like this better.
@janpeterdegraaff This is Zoltan Kocsis himself directing Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, and the CD is called "Orchestrations by Zoltan Kocsis".
It just goes to show how orchestrally complex his music was. Both Debussy and Ravel knew how to write orchestral music for the piano! :L Thank you very much!
Oh ok one more time...!

Oh, that's good. I can't imagine anyone presuming to improve on Ravel's own orchestrations.

Anyone not familiar should also check out Zoltan Kocsis' orchestration of the fugue; really clarifies the lines and is just ridiculously beautiful.

@ByzantineCalvinist I don't believe so, but it's on Amazon, and probably on Spotify.

I love so much this music. I never heard that version. I'm very very happy to know that it exists. Thanks for the share.

Listening to this, you would've thought that Maurice Ravel himself orchestrated this. Kocsis did very well with this orchestration.

Sent shivers down my spine! Why oh why did Ravel never orchestrate this?
AttemptingToBeBusy 1 year ago
@AttemptingToBeBusy He orchestrated the four movements of Tombeau de Couperin for small orchestra. This piece obviously needs a larger orchestra.
