In reply to your question, Penny was desperately trying to locate Desmond...She had limited information about the island (in other words, she knew it had specific properties), and she hired people to set up a tracking station to detect electromagnetic anamolies. When the button wasn't pushed, a large amount of energy was released, and her tracking station picked up on it. The man called Penny to tell her that they may have found Desmond.

Locke got blown up too I believe-- but not killed. It's hard to remember, but I'm pretty sure he was blown off into the jungle. Then he woke up with no voice. Desmond's conciousness was sent back in time...... so he didnt die either. Finally, a popular theory is that Jughead, the bomb from season 5, is behind a concrete wall in the Swan. so it could possibly be the magnetism.
