Herakles. HERAKLES. Hercules is the name the Romans gave him, if you're setting it in ancient *Greece* you should use his *Greek* name. Herakles. Lol Herakles raising a second family, the reason he was doing the 12 labours in the first place wass the fact he was tricked into murdering his original family. Mangled mythology much?
does anyone know of any helpers of mythology? like how hermes was the messenger for the gods. im trying to find a helper or a symbol of something that helped people achieve tasks. if anyone knows of this matter and if they can help me out with this that would be really cool thanks.
"Helpers" to whom, and for what? There's so many ways that that can go.
Muses were sources of inspiration for mortals, so that can be a form of help.
Ganymede was one of Zeus' male lovers and was given immortality such that he could serve Zeus (mostly as a cupbearer) while never having his fantastic looks fade.
Deimos and Phobos were in a sense, Ares' helpers... as he never went to war without them.
So many ways that that could go, you gotta be more specific.
It took me a second to realize this was actually the story of the Giants war instead of the Titanomachy. Looking at the "Titans" in this series I wonder if it was part of the inspiration for the God of War video game. I don't know why they thought it was a good idea to make Poseidon into the merman version though. He literally looks like a fish out of water pogo-ing around with no legs.
* Sigh * I really dislike the mashup mythology. Hercules murdered his first family after Hera drove him insane and performed the 12 labours to atone for it. He sailed with the Argonauts for a time and helped fight against the giants, not the Titans (they were LONG before Herc's time) before remarrying. His second wife was assaulted by a centaur, who Hercules killed, and who tricked his wife into giving him a poisoned tunic. Herc immolated himself and was made a full god by Zeus. The end.
Didn't replace her... just that she only appeared in a single episode. The only replacement was Dionysus in place of Hestia, which is of course classically correct. Neither of them appeared in this episode either.
ares is the god of war, but he is just a coward, he cryed in the trojan war when he had a wounded, and left the war, look at hephaestus, zeus trow hephaestus over seas, it took 9 days before he landed in a island and broked his legs but he dint cry, he made a new leg for himself.
Hephaestus did deserve a seat on the council! He crafted the other Olympians weapons and was the patron god of artists and craftsmenship. Olympus would've been nothing without him!
Becauses gods were extremely vain... and he was one of only two gods to ever be born ugly, such that his own parents (Zeus and Hera) threw him off the slopes of Mt. Olympus, the day he was born. They were embarrassed of his hideousness.
No surprise that they allowed the others to pick on him.
You've got two stories confused/blended with each other. Learn to have half a clue what you're talking about, before attempting to "correct" someone else.
@hypersonicchaos12 See, I thought the story was that Hepaestus was the product of one of Zeus' many, many, many affairs and when Hera found out, she was so enraged that she threw Hephaestus off Mt Olympus and he landed in the sea (how he survived but had deformed legs).
No, quite the opposite. Hephaestus was one of Zeus' few LEGITIMATE children (along with Ares and Hebe).
Hera took great pride in her pregnancy with him, as she felt sure he'd be a magnificent god (she was rather disappointed in Ares, due to his bloodlust and Zeus' general lack of regard for him) who'd make Zeus forget all about his favorite child (Athena) and his other lovers.
When they saw how ugly he was, all those hopes faded. Zeus threw him off the face of Olympus.
Every time I watch this I just keep thinking that Athena must be thinking 'told you so!' when she tells the other gods that it was Hepheastus who seized power by freeing the Titans XD
"The epic battle between the Olympians and the Gigantes, who (for whatever reason) are referred to here as 'Titans.'"
That's how they're most commonly referred to; most people wouldn't know the term "gigantes", since it's just Greek for "giants". Titans means "giants" too; I can't recall ever seeing the term "Gigantes" used except as a footnote.
No offense, but if that's the case, then you couldn't possibly be all that familiar with the story as told in the classics.
The Gigantes, were the original race of Giants in Greek Mythology. They, along with the Kyklopes (Cyclopses) and Hekatonheires (100Handed Ones) were originally imprisoned inside Gaia (mother Earth) when their brother (Cronus) refused to free them after defeating and castrating Uranus.
Later, they (led by Alcyoneus) would rise against the Olympians.
The show was aimed at 8 to 12yr-olds, for crying out loud. I hardly think skirting the topics of misogyny and murder via domestic violence, is that horrific of an omission.
@ImmortalSynn Besides, Hercules didnt even kill Megara and his children on purpose. He had no ability to control his emotions, and he occasionally had random bursts of anger, during which he could never control himself, ending up doing things that he immediately regretted once he regained control. He would attempt to purify himself of his crimes. Hence, the 12 labors.
The gods couldn't be good or evil because the concept of morality was an aspect of their whims.
Also, if you spent less time watching loosely-interpreted movies and more time reading the actual classics, you wouldn't get ideas like Medusa being "raped" by Poseidon in your head.
Ovid makes it very clear that Medusa, who was supposed to be a virgin shrine-maiden, willfully flirted with and slept with Poseidon in Athena's temple. THAT'S why she was punished.
@ImmortalSynn actually i did read books and mythology and it states very clearly that poseiden raped her and in a fit of rage athena cursed her and blamed her for the loss of innocence
Oh? Well here, humor me a bit... what "books" would these be? LOL By who? What was the exact wording used to describe this "rape"... write me a sentence or two. I'd be more than happy to do the same for Ovid (y'know, the scribe who actually told the tale). So go ahead, I'll wait.......
@d3athbRinger well infact i learnt the rape from school lessons but there are many many stories on what happend to her, stories that say she was born a gorgon some say she insulted athena some say she courted posieden and the first story i heard was of her being raped by a lustful posieden and if you want proof of these stories all you need to do is google it
So in other words... you weren't able to answer any question I just asked you. Pathetic, but predictable.
PS. I was writing theses on these stories before Google existed. "Just Google it" is not the way to respond when someone asks you to back up your sources, if you want to come off as having half a clue what you're talking about... which of course, you don't. ;)
@ImmortalSynn erm considering i havent been in school for so long theres no way that i can say what the book was so dont get high and mighty because you think im wrong
Actually, you're making my point for me... if you want an unadulterated telling of the myths, then ditch whatever crap you're reading in these unnamed mystery-books, and go read the ACTUAL CLASSICS as inscribed by the ACTUAL epic poets. They're not hard to find. And yes, not the easiest thing to read decipher, but so much more "accurate" such that clumsy mistakes like this aren't made.
Did Hera ever do anything kind for anyone? It just that all the myths involving her, she seems to do nothing but become jealous and attack the lovers and mortal children of Zeus (I'm not saying what he did was right), did she ever protect/care for any humans?
The name is Alcyoneus, and (while not a Titan) he did indeed exist in the classic myths.
Also, aside from Prometheus and Epimethius, there's little account of direct/intentional interaction between humans and Titans at all.
Lastly, as stated in the video's info-box, this telling is primarily the Gigantomachy... aside from the series inexplicably using the title "Titans," it really had nothing to do with the Titans themselves at all.
Why are the giants always evil? I mean seriously if I"d been stuck in a ditch for thousands of years I'd be kinda pissed off too! Honestly with the exception of Kronus the rest of the Titans behaved far better and cared for the humans better than most of the Gods! i.e. Prometheous rules!
Question: How can Alceonas think he's got a big crack in his head? I just thought that was fun! And how did he know Hercules's name when he never told him what it was! :) Just somthing I thought was fun!
Never really though of that, lol. Though do know that that was a liberty taken by this series... there's not really anything in the classics about Alcyoneus being made of stone.
It's funny that this series censured almost all the greek myths but still have many references to the originals poems. here Hera and Ares are the ones who oppose Vulcan and this could make perfect sense given that they hate him in the real mythology
Forget Hades, ruler of endless riches and endless drones. Hephestus has every right to be mad at the gods, espesially Hera, who cast him out of Olympus just for his looks. It had to take a hostage taken (of hera) to gain him his rightful place amongst the pantheon. Now the only goddess he has to fret about was his faithless wife, Aphrodites.
Alcyoneus (of the Gigantes) was substituted here due to this series' general aversion to raising the issue of relationships between the gods, beyond mother-child. It was thought that having Kronos involved would skirt that threshold too closely, so he was taken out.
Kronos didn't actually kill Uranus, impossible to do to an abstract being. He just castrated him (which in those times was considered worse than execution) with his blood being resurrected in the form of Aphrodite, and his spirit surviving in his curse of patricide.
3-Kronos was zeus´s father titan of harvest, CHronos is father time, a greco roman spin off reference to him due to his similarities to time, his "real" name though would be Aeon
Again, you're confusing concepts. Aeon was the three-headed personification of time in terms of eternity, eras of human achievement, and the human lifespan; as seen by Greco-Romans. The *concept* of Chronos, as you're thinking it, was entirely pre-Socratic and only later associated with the being Aeon, and not actually a creation of (nor real reference to) the culture in relevance here.
tar-tar-us?i think he means tarterus.where has i my self am a huge fan of greek and roman mythology the words being pronounced correctly would be a huge bonus.atleast i didn't see hades at the sumit since he is only allowed on olimpus during the winter solstice
I teach a Greek Mythology unit in a middle school reading class. The students LOVE these videos. Thanks so much for posting them. I really helps get the kids interested in the stories.
Yeah we always read the D'Aulaire's version in the book and then watch the video. It's cool to compare and contrast and discuss the reasons for it (writer's audience, etc...)
@midoggett you do tell them that these are inaccurate, right? for example, they've confused and blended the Titans and Gigantes, and Hephaestus -was- on the Olympian Council
Heh, gotta love how toned down everything is. Kinda feel sorry for the kids, though. Since greco-roman mythology doesn't really come up in schools any more, they might always think Hera hated Hercules because of his ego... come to think of it, did they ever address Hercules as being Zeus's son? I've only caught 2 or 3 eps so far.
With the exception of Demeter & Persephone, familial relationships involving the gods were a subject that this series strictly and intentionally avoided, lest the topic of incest arise within a kids' show.
Alcyoneus wasn't a Titan. Damn this garbage ass series. He was a Gigante. This is the Gigantomachy that they are showing. They are confusing it for the Titanomachy though. The Titans are the uncles, aunts 'n parents of the Olympian Gods. And no, they aren't all evil, Zeus is just as bad as Cronus.
The Gigantes were a warring race born from the blood of Ouranus (1st Sky God, Zeus's Grandpops), so this story is definitely about the Gigantomachy (Battle of Gods & Gigantes). Stupid freaking series.
actually the gods was the terrible forces zeus took away our heat but prometheas the titan gave heat back to the world also zeus tried to kill all humans but the beast behemoth protected the atlanteans and other titan worshippers
he didnt really fight the titans but he did help the gods fight the gigantes, which i guess were like newer titans, they seem to have mixed both stories cuz no one really cares about the gigantes
In Greek mythology, the Gigantes or, commonly, Giants, were a race of giants, children of Gaia, who were fertilized by the blood of Uranus, after being castrated by his son Cronus.
Gaea, incensed by the imprisonment of the Titans in Tartarus by the Olympians, incited the Gigantes to rise up in arms against them, end their reign, and restore the Titans' rule. Led on by Alcyoneus and Porphyrion, they tested the strength of the Olympians in what is known as the Gigantomachia or Gigantomachy.
I think the Titans where right to be angry they don't seem evil in my opinion, the Olympians are the one that look down on humans like a bunch of Spoiled Dictators. The lava that spilled was caused by an attack by the Olympians *
Funny, generally Hephaestus is included amoung the 12 rather than Hades.
This is the 3rd "Titans Escape" story I've seen, the other two beeing the Disney movie and anouther one by Dreamworks. What was the actual myth about it anyway?
In the actual classic Myth... gods like Hephaestus, Artemis, Apollo, Ares, and Athena (shown here) hadn't even been born yet.
The Titan's king, Kronus, had already destroyed Uranus, with the help of his mother Gaia. But he broke his promise to her, to free the Cyclopes and the 100-Handed Ones from the underworld. He also ate his own children (Hestia, Hera, Demeter, Hades, Poseidon).
Their mother, the Titaness queen Rhea, had secretly sent baby Zeus to be raised by mortals.
This series was very careful not to delve too far into relationships between gods, let's the subject of incest arise in a childrens' show.
As such, Kronus and Rhea were left out, and the original battle with the Titans was merged into a later battle with the Gigantes, and Alcyoneus was subbed into the place of Kronus
When Zeus was a teenager, Rhea brought him in to be a cupbearer to Kronus. Gaia had given Zeus a potion, added to wine, that caused Kronus to puke up his now-fully-grown and completely undigested children. They then went to war against Kronus and most of the other Titans, and were losing.
Gaia appeared to Zeus and told him to free the 100-Handed Ones for reinforcement. He did, and they were so grateful that they gave him the thunderbolt, which he used to defeat and destroy the hostile Titans
Yeah, I already knew about the Olympian-Titan War, my question was about the whole "porphesy" of a mortal preventing the Titans from rising agian. I've seen it mentioned in movies like this, but I've never come across it in studying Greek Mythology.
Here they said Prometheus gave the prophesy, which would be feasibele considering he made many other such predictions. Prometheus's story was pretty humanisitc, so I wouldn't doubt it. Do you know what he is supposed to have said said?
There is no such prophesy that I'm aware of... mostly because all Titans that posed a threat to the gods (save for perhaps, Atlas) had been "destroyed" long before the first human ever walked the earth.
Probably the closest thing to any of that, would be Aeschylus' tale of Prometheus predicting that a male child by Metis would be strong enough to overthrow Zeus, and also of another potential downfall of Zeus, one he shared with Heracles upon being freed from the mountainside.
Herakles.

This is great one !! But I was wrong for recognizing Ares and Hades. It made Hades in wrong form. Hades should be more spooky and powerful.

I thought Kronos was the king?
hayabusa118 2 years ago 16
Yes, he was.
As has been mentioned several times:
Alcyoneus (of the Gigantes) was substituted here due to this series' general aversion to raising the issue of relationships between the gods, beyond mother-child. It was thought that having Kronos involved would skirt that threshold too closely, so he was taken out.
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
@hayabusa118
Uranus=> Cronos. Cronos slays Uranus and becomes the master of universe.
aizik2005 1 year ago
@aizik2005
Kronos didn't actually kill Uranus, impossible to do to an abstract being. He just castrated him (which in those times was considered worse than execution) with his blood being resurrected in the form of Aphrodite, and his spirit surviving in his curse of patricide.
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
@ImmortalSynn I have to agree with you on that.
Rtkat3 1 year ago
@hayabusa118 kronos was the first titan - not the king
megauin2 1 year ago
@megauin2
Actually, you're completely wrong on both counts:
Kronos was the LAST of the Titans, and indeed he was the king.
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
@ImmortalSynn there was a Kronos and a CHronos...dont remember which i s which though xP
ty0052 1 year ago
@ty0052
It's "Kronos" or "Cronus", and they were the same being.
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
@ImmortalSynn no, one was supposed to be time itself and the other kind of a "lesser" version (and daddy of zeus and the others)
ty0052 1 year ago
@ty0052
What kind of moron asks a question to something he (obviously) doesn't know, then attempts to refute the answer, as if he did??
Argue with me all you'd like, if you had half a clue, you'd realize that the answer's not going to change.
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
@ImmortalSynn
1- i never asked nothing
2- look for yourself if you want
3-Kronos was zeus´s father titan of harvest, CHronos is father time, a greco roman spin off reference to him due to his similarities to time, his "real" name though would be Aeon
ty0052 1 year ago
@ty0052
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
@ImmortalSynn so there ARE a kronos and a chronos ¬¬
ty0052 1 year ago
@ty0052
A concept (similar to Mandos) and a being, not two beings.

It's "Poseidon", and please try to have half a clue before you act as an (amateur) authority on something.... it's rather obnoxious otherwise.
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
the he titan king's name was cronos(or kronos spelling in this matter means little)
mageanimefan 2 years ago
As stated several times here, Alcyoneus was of the Gigantes, and any mention of Cronus was intentionally avoided in this series.
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
tar-tar-us?i think he means tarterus.where has i my self am a huge fan of greek and roman mythology the words being pronounced correctly would be a huge bonus.atleast i didn't see hades at the sumit since he is only allowed on olimpus during the winter solstice

You pronounced it correctly, but spelled it incorrectly.

I teach a Greek Mythology unit in a middle school reading class. The students LOVE these videos. Thanks so much for posting them. I really helps get the kids interested in the stories.
midoggett 2 years ago 10
Glad I could help.
Do make sure however, to remind them that these animations are somewhat (and in a few, heavily!) modified, for the sake of being a children's show.
But then again, I'm sure you encourage them to read the classic works anyways. :)
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
Yeah we always read the D'Aulaire's version in the book and then watch the video. It's cool to compare and contrast and discuss the reasons for it (writer's audience, etc...)
Thanks again!
midoggett 2 years ago
Ah, good stuff. You're very welcome.
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
@midoggett That's cool. Do you ask the kids to point out the differences as assignments?
TerryB01 1 year ago
@midoggett you do tell them that these are inaccurate, right? for example, they've confused and blended the Titans and Gigantes, and Hephaestus -was- on the Olympian Council
LordSvzklx 11 months ago
@midoggett so what do u think about Homer?
station4hiphop 7 months ago
Heh, gotta love how toned down everything is. Kinda feel sorry for the kids, though. Since greco-roman mythology doesn't really come up in schools any more, they might always think Hera hated Hercules because of his ego... come to think of it, did they ever address Hercules as being Zeus's son? I've only caught 2 or 3 eps so far.
WatchThisReview 2 years ago
No they didn't.
With the exception of Demeter & Persephone, familial relationships involving the gods were a subject that this series strictly and intentionally avoided, lest the topic of incest arise within a kids' show.
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
XtraTrstrL 2 years ago
Get a grip dude.
Half of that crap is already explained in the info box, as well as the fact that the series is modified for age/time.
Quit spamming the threads with all your whining.
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
actually the gods was the terrible forces zeus took away our heat but prometheas the titan gave heat back to the world also zeus tried to kill all humans but the beast behemoth protected the atlanteans and other titan worshippers
HmongVangRocks 2 years ago
So when did Hercules fight the Titans in real Mythology?
appleciderisgood123 2 years ago
he didnt really fight the titans but he did help the gods fight the gigantes, which i guess were like newer titans, they seem to have mixed both stories cuz no one really cares about the gigantes

the titans were not evil this show is really not acurate

WTF, where did you read that the Titans were good? They're evil and they always have been.

Not all of them were evil.
Some Titans, like Hyperion, Metis, Leto, etc; had no quarrel with the gods, were even the parents of several of them.

14jamesg 2 years ago
Not necessarily, Titans came in many forms... only some of them chose to resemble humanoids.
That said, this telling blends elements of the Titans, Gigantes, and others into one.

jurn77 2 years ago
In Greek mythology, the Gigantes or, commonly, Giants, were a race of giants, children of Gaia, who were fertilized by the blood of Uranus, after being castrated by his son Cronus.
Gaea, incensed by the imprisonment of the Titans in Tartarus by the Olympians, incited the Gigantes to rise up in arms against them, end their reign, and restore the Titans' rule. Led on by Alcyoneus and Porphyrion, they tested the strength of the Olympians in what is known as the Gigantomachia or Gigantomachy.
syler100 2 years ago
I think the Titans where right to be angry they don't seem evil in my opinion, the Olympians are the one that look down on humans like a bunch of Spoiled Dictators. The lava that spilled was caused by an attack by the Olympians *

ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
Since when did Hades get a throne on Olympus?
Serpentara12 3 years ago
Plato listed Hades as one of the original 12 Olympians, mostly due to the rituals observed in the 12th month.
I agree though that he's not commonly among them, yet this telling chose to include it.
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
Funny, generally Hephaestus is included amoung the 12 rather than Hades.
This is the 3rd "Titans Escape" story I've seen, the other two beeing the Disney movie and anouther one by Dreamworks. What was the actual myth about it anyway?
usa2z 2 years ago
In the actual classic Myth... gods like Hephaestus, Artemis, Apollo, Ares, and Athena (shown here) hadn't even been born yet.
The Titan's king, Kronus, had already destroyed Uranus, with the help of his mother Gaia. But he broke his promise to her, to free the Cyclopes and the 100-Handed Ones from the underworld. He also ate his own children (Hestia, Hera, Demeter, Hades, Poseidon).
Their mother, the Titaness queen Rhea, had secretly sent baby Zeus to be raised by mortals.
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
wtf y is "alcionus" king of the titans?! that spot belongs to Kronos!
jurn77 2 years ago
This series was very careful not to delve too far into relationships between gods, let's the subject of incest arise in a childrens' show.
As such, Kronus and Rhea were left out, and the original battle with the Titans was merged into a later battle with the Gigantes, and Alcyoneus was subbed into the place of Kronus
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
wtf thats stupid.. and its kronos
jurn77 2 years ago
Know what you're talking about before you attempt (and fail) to "correct" someone:
Kronus, Cronus, Chronus, Kronos, and Cronos are all accepted spellings of the same name.
Chronos, however, is not-- it's the name for a philosophy, not the titan.
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
When Zeus was a teenager, Rhea brought him in to be a cupbearer to Kronus. Gaia had given Zeus a potion, added to wine, that caused Kronus to puke up his now-fully-grown and completely undigested children. They then went to war against Kronus and most of the other Titans, and were losing.
Gaia appeared to Zeus and told him to free the 100-Handed Ones for reinforcement. He did, and they were so grateful that they gave him the thunderbolt, which he used to defeat and destroy the hostile Titans
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
Yeah, I already knew about the Olympian-Titan War, my question was about the whole "porphesy" of a mortal preventing the Titans from rising agian. I've seen it mentioned in movies like this, but I've never come across it in studying Greek Mythology.
Here they said Prometheus gave the prophesy, which would be feasibele considering he made many other such predictions. Prometheus's story was pretty humanisitc, so I wouldn't doubt it. Do you know what he is supposed to have said said?
usa2z 2 years ago
There is no such prophesy that I'm aware of... mostly because all Titans that posed a threat to the gods (save for perhaps, Atlas) had been "destroyed" long before the first human ever walked the earth.
Probably the closest thing to any of that, would be Aeschylus' tale of Prometheus predicting that a male child by Metis would be strong enough to overthrow Zeus, and also of another potential downfall of Zeus, one he shared with Heracles upon being freed from the mountainside.
ImmortalSynn 2 years ago
Although they say vs Titans. I think it's more vs the Gigantes since Heracle joins.
hung44 3 years ago
Well, that, and Alcyoneus was of the Gigantes (not Titans) as well.
