Correct me if I'm wrong (everyone else does!) but wasn't his intent to produce a safer alternative to nitro? (Which killed many times more miners & industrial workers!) Now I'll grant you there were certainly many nasty military applications of the product... But the inventor is only marginally responsible. (I mean, when was the last time anyone blamed John Ford for the Blitz Krieg???)

A simplification. The Nobel prize is primarily a prize for great achievements in the sciences and arts. Literature, chemistry, physics... The peace prize is the only one given from Norway, and if my memory serves Norway was given the honor to avoid (or aid in avoiding) armed rebellion against the Swedish overlords at the time. (Norway was under Swedish rule at that time)

What is the actual reason us Norwegians are trusted to name the recipent of the peace prize! Did the Swedes choose to stay clear of it? He must have known the name of Torbjørn Jagland long before he turned Norway in to a Mr Bean sketch....that was BEFORE he retired from politics, and now he is in the committee......the Swedes won't touch it.

@pc0sence From what I`ve read it is because, at the time, Sweden and Norway were under a joint ruler and Sweden was in charge of foreign relations (including wars), so Nobel thought that norwegians, who didn´t have anything to do with wars in the joined state, could name the peace prize recipient.
