  • And here is the english for anyone that is interested ;-) Lord, have mercy! Day of wrath! O day of mourning! Day of wrath! O day of mourning! See fulfilled the prophets' warning, As foretold by David and the sibyl! How much tremor there will be, when the Judge will come, How much tremor there will be, when the Judge will come, Day of wrath! See fulfilled the prophets' warning, Day of wrath! O day of mourning!
  • Here is all the latin: Kyrie, eleison! Dies iræ! Dies illa! Dies iræ! Dies illa Solvet sæclum in favilla Teste David cum Sibylla! Quantus tremor est futurus, Quando iudex est venturus, Quantus tremor est futurus, Quando iudex est venturus, Dies iræ! Solvet sæclum in favilla Dies iræ! Dies illa!
  • See what it says in Latin and it gave me the shivers at how meaningful everything was.

  • the first time I've watched this in five years and it still gets my heart racing.

  • All films should begin like this...EPIC!! :) loved it!!

  • Dat Clopin.........damn

  • Isit me or does the father's voice sound like rasputin voice in Anastasia

  • Clopin's last note I can hit yay

  • @MsAloisTrancy I'm learning to sing this song, I really want to hit the last note.

  • @Li5021 well...it's a D over high C so you should practice either a falsetto or your scales (don't try to hit that note on your first try or you'll ruin your vocal chords) for the first few days just gradually move up the scale..after a few days you should aim to reach a high C...and then once it's comfortable, aim for the D. i'm a high soprano and it took me 20 minutes to warm up well enough to hit that note comfortably..so rest assured don't force it out..:) good luck!

  • @theslykit Thanks for the info, I'm going to be taking some singing lessons from a friend of mine who used to be a professional singer.

  • I remember seeing this in the theatre when I was 6.

It was the best thing I'd ever seen.

  • Dude, I get fucking chills at the ending of the song ALL THE TIME.

  • How did this movie get a G rating? I'm not even talking about the subtext; they say damn and hell frequently, and a character explicitly dies onscreen by being kicked in the head and having their skull fractured on the ground. You can see the body and the blood for christ's sake! Not to mention the villain burns people alive in their homes and has his subordinates whipped.

  • @garrysmodmoviemaker1 My guess? Children didn't really understand what happened...

I will admit, it wasn't until I was like 10 or so I understood Quasi's mother died.

I did understand the people being burnt to death, but I never thought about it too much...

I blame children being naive :P

  • @garrysmodmoviemaker1 It's a religious movie and those weren't originally bad words. The Bible says both frequently. It's all in context.

  • @garrysmodmoviemaker1 Well.. Frolo doesn't SUCCEED with burning them haha Pheobus saves them

  • @TheJakeFTW You see half the city on fire in a later shot... it's pretty clear what happened to the people.

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard, there is such a beautiful message in the movie as well

  • Best song of the whole film! Oh what I would give to do this for the school play instead of Beauty and the Beast...

  • That last note sung by Clopin always gives me chills!

  • sing along eh....please like this if you couldnt sing along to the last part of the song. LOL

  • That is one big riddle.:)) I love disney, at least the old one at least. They always have a message to tell. My favorite line Frollo ever said was "I am guiltless, she ran, I pursued" Oh, running over stolen goods, huh? Running equals death, and on a church too. Still I love this movie

  • Probably one of the most epic intros to a Disney film.

  • Oh, what I would give to have your voice, Clopin.

  • Someone mind telling me who or what 'Kyrie Eleison' is.

  • @cobrall009 Kyrie = "oh God" Eleison = "have mercy on me"

  • @shikaluv21

    Thank you.

  • @cobrall009 you're quite welcome x3

  • Movie starts

    Walt disney prsents

AAAAHH AAAAH AAAAH AAAAH AAAAH AAAAh AAAAH AAAH AAAAH AAAAAH AAAAAAAH AAAAAAAAAAH, AAAAAH AAAAH AAAAAh AAAAAAAH AAAAAAH AAAAAH AAAAAH AAAAAAH AAAAAAH AAAAAAAH AAAAAAAAH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH, thats how u start a movie with chorus singing

  • @vergilheartnet IKR!!! that is my favorite opening to a movie.

  • Dude, the archdeacon is Ratcliffe from Pocahontas! :D

  • @wolfemmpress he's also cogsworth from beauty and the beast and jumba from lilo and stitch

  • Holy fuck that last note makes my whole body break out in goosebumps.

  • Every time I search for this song I pray that I'll find some lost tape of Paul Kandel (Clopin) singing this in the recording studio so I can see him hit these notes....I never find it :'(

    I'll keep looking, though :)

  • the best part of this video is frollo's baby-killing face.

  • Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)

Dies irae, dies illa (Day of wrath, that day)

Solvet saeclum in favilla (Shall consume the world in ashes)

Teste David cum sibylla (As prophesied by David and the sibyl)

Quantus tremor est futurus (What trembling is to be)

Quando Judex est venturus (When the Judge is come)

    Found the translations :)

  • @MikkiPhantomhive with all the words like Judgement day is comin, This Movie sure is the most Underrated disney film ever

  • I'm sorry but the new Walt Disney Pictures intro ruins a great part of the movie. The black screen, the bells...what is their problem? Can't they live the past disney films with the previous intro?

  • I cant believe Frollo cant see the stupid cruppiton in himself! How blind is this idiot!? If I were their I wold give him a big kick in his BIG, FAT BUTT! And Quassimodo is not that ugly, trust me I have seen way uglier.

  • @sonicwinx77 he's just that arrogant...and conceited...and mean...and stupid.

  • i like how casually Frollo says

"it's an unholy demon, i'm sending it back to hell"

you know, like it's nothing out of the oridinary

  • @nurfbandana lol, true!

  • @nurfbandana He obviously does these things with frequency- kill a couple evil gypsies, send some demons back to hell, and all in time for dinner!

  • I. LOVE. CLOPIN. SO MUCH XD

  • I love the beginning of this song. So amazing. Coolest part is that the latin you hear in the background is an old Catholic song called "dies irae" which is about the day of judgement. So chilling but surreal knowing what they mean, i advise you all to look them up.

  • @elliemay19 It is because Frollo realizes that what the Arch Deacon said was true; that the eyes of the saints, Mary, and Baby Jesus witness his crimes. Plus, if you look at the faces when the lightning strikes they looked angered, that would deffinately scare the crap out of me.

  • How come Frollo looks up like he is looking at the statues/gargoyles and the well is on the ground? :S

  • @elliemay19 The eyes of Notre Dame.

  • @xknightmage Thanks But isnt he meant to be looking at the well?? x

  • my stupid computer is so slow, the audio works fine but it kinda kills the purpose of a sing-along if the words don't even match. Luckily I have it memorized :-D

  • did frollos voice actor do the voice acting for treasure planet, from the talking book jim hawkins has?

  • frollo saw this and pressed dislike button...

  • Sing the bells,bells,bells,bells

    Bells, bells, bells,bells

    Bells of Notre Dame

thats always been my favorite bit

so much passion in their voices

  • This is my all-time favorite Disney movie. It's a bit more mature than other disney movies, and i love that

  • I think that Disney threw its hands in the air and said, "Fuck it. Let's make her live and keep it close to the original this time."

  • Disney should be proud of having done this movie. It's so different than the others

  • Wow, I just realized Frollo is kind of like Judge Turpin from Sweeney Todd.

  • @Catsarethebestever11 OMG that is so friggin wierd....he went from ultimate good to bad villan D: or is it the other way around o.O

  • I love how to counter Frollo's justifications for what he did the preist says " You can lie to yourself and your minions, you claim that you haven't a qualm, but you never can run from nor hide what you've done from the eyes, the very eyes of Notre Dame." My second favorite line from this song is "Now here is a riddle to guess if you can...Who is themonster and who is the man?" I love Clopin! He is my favorite character!

  • i know latin it's not it is french besides he sings 'morning in paris'

  • i lik how the archadecon tells frollo what he have done and yet frollo still tries to justify his actions and believes he did nothing wrong...true villian!!!

  • @AnimeDollxAna2 in his eyes he WAS doing the right thing....which is why belief and tradition need to change as the times change....Frollo just couldn't deal with the idea of change :3

  • Clopin wins ^_^

  • OMG! The girl in purple at 1:29 is the same girl who hugs Quasi in the end of the movie, and steps up to the plate for treating Quasi right!!! ♥♥♥♥

  • omg clopin is my fav character

  • I think you made a small mistake in your description on who sing this song. Paul Kandel andTony Jay you got right. However Tom Hulce did not sing in this song David Ogden Stiers did.

  • I fucking love Clopin. <333

  • Frollo hates ugly people ;(

  • Frollo disliked this video....

  • Steven Schwartz (Wicked & Pippin and many other masterpieces) + Allan Menken (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and practically every awesome movie Disney made) = YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Am I the only person who totally gets shivers whenever Clopin sings =D He has such a great voice.

  • the chorus lyrics had the word cum in it ha!

  • @TheHaxman999

It is LATIN! they do stuff like that! and now that i think about it, wasn't the English language derived from Latin? hmm...

well, anyways, the phrase "Teste David cum sibylla" means (I hope) "According to the testimony David and the Sibyl" a little rusty on my Latin here!

  • @hinatagirl282008 English was derived mainly from Anglo Saxon and roughly 15% Latin was mixed in with it over the years.

  • @CheifPaco

well, there you go. I don't know what I'm talking about!

  • @lexdeathnotefan that's bit Greek its latin. I believe its got something to do with anger.

  • Thumbs up if you want Clopin to take you home :D

  • Clopin is AWESOME! What does the foreign song say? Sorry, I don't know this song. :( BAD FROLLO!

  • I don't understand how anyone can say that these kinds of movies are inappropriate. My Mom loved to watch this with me when my sisters and I were little. It had an awesome plot and story, plus characters with depth

  • @AE901213 What idiots called this inappropriate? Moreover, how can a Disney movie be inappropriate?

  • @RustyPete12 oh trust me, there are ways for a disney movie to be inappropriate...Little mermaids priest having a boner, Kovo in Lion King 2 "And make a pride...All our own", But granted these are the best movies for kids and can still be highly enjoyed by adults.

  • @RustyPete12 What's inappropriate is Esmeralda's dance. Kids won't see how, but adults will recognize it as a stripper routine. She even uses a pole.

  • I dare anyone to make a video post where you sing along (beautifuly!) through out the WHOLE song. If you nail 5.55, well then you have my enternal respect :)!

  • I bet my life that Frollo's the one who dislikes!

  • i love how this has Greek in it :)

  • @lexdeathnotefan its latin :) hehe. i love how it has latin in it <3

  • I heart Clopin!

  • between quasimodo and the boat "driver" i think the last one is way uglier

  • Everytime I hear the mother scream 'Sanctuary, please give us sanctuary!', her voice feels like a knife cutting through the very core of my soul... the voice actors for this movie were incredible

  • heh heh they said teste david cum XD

  • Paul Kandell has the most beautiful and vibrant tenor I've ever heard!!!

  • ''Kyrie Eleison'' means Lord Mercy

  • I love how forthright this movie was incorporating religion. Love the Latin!

  • what a way to open a movie, this is the best way to draw an audience in... with an epic song and a dark opening, just beautiful. I love this, I never liked this movie when I was younger but I just rewatched it yesterday and I realize what a masterpiece this movie is.

Disney bring back the old Disney, we want more movies like this!

  • This opening is just so epic!

  • 3:03 For everyone wondering what those words mean, they are from the song Dies Irae, or Day of Wrath. "Dies Irae, dies illa, Dies irae, dies illa That day of Wrath, that dreadful day, Solvet Saeclum in favilla shall heaven and earth in ashes lay, teste David cum Sibylla as David and the Sybil say Quantus tremor est futurus What horror must invade the mind Quando Judex est venturus when the approaching Judge shall find Quantus tremor est futurus What horror must invade the mind
  • A terrible singer voted this down.

  • and THAT is how you start a movie. WIN.

  • Love frollo, the most human, and inhuman villian in all of disney

  • best...music...evar...omg

  • anyone else see that the guard who says "you there, what are you hiding!?" is the lead guard from alladin.... mind blown 0.0

  • DAMN. clopin held that last note for 8 seconds. O____O '

    completely orgasmic <3

  • @ToxicChewingGum i think it was more! like 14 lol focus you'll hear the "m" at the verryy end when Quasimodo lands on the floor.

im not sure but i read a comment somewhere that he holds it till the end.

  • I can't follow this song at all, I wish they could just tell me where those bells were.

  • This man has texture in his voice - a great achievement in itself. It gives it an 'Epic' edge, which this film is exellent at.

  • It seems impossible, but the italian singer sings the last two words half tone higher.... Check it out....

  • @SoulHudsonSlash yeah it's true :D

  • @SoulHudsonSlash Just call him Clopin and be done with it.

  • @SoulHudsonSlash Amazing right but technically at least as far as the movie goes he would be a Parisian singer as Notre Dame is in Paris.

  • @SoulHudsonSlash By "Half tone" do you mean "Half steps"? I havent heard the term before and Im a music major lol. Just wanna make sure Im not missing out on something :) but nice research!

  • Paul Kandel is god!! that high D at the end is heavenly!! my goal in life is to extend my range the 2 half steps up so that I can sing this song without having to sing the last two notes falsetto.

  • Its insane how epic this movie's opening is!!!!!

No other cartoon ever starts this epic hahahah

  • Haha i love how it goes from the sweet little Disney opening to the epic opening of the movie...

  • haha Bells of Notre Dame sing along,

just have fun with it, keep up with the music... and y'know. Find a way to hit the ridiculous (in a good way) high tenor note at the end <3

  • Why is Quasimodo redheaded, and green eyed when his parents have dark hair and eyes? I guess he's pale because he's stuck up the bell tower all his life, but the hair and the eyes are weird. >.<

  • @emcee2456 I never noticed that, but then the redhead gene does seem to pop up just randomly, my mum is redhead green eyes, and none of her parents or grandparents had either one...

  • @emcee2456 Could be a dormant gene from the dad or something.

  • @emcee2456 Maybe he was adopted

  • Great Intro

  • how long does Clopin hold the note at the end of the song? i can't tell because of the chorus..

  • @aburny from what I head he pretty much kept it up until quasimodo was swinging though the picture

  • @aburny he holds it until a few moments after the part where Quasimodo lands. You can hear him make the "ame" part of "Dame"

  • @AnimeIdiot19 yeah he is like EPIC.

  • the begining is similar to beauty and the beat, they are both in france, and the bakerman at the begining.

  • telio

  • 2:53 That is definitely the voice of the head soldier from Aladdin! :)

  • What language are they speaking at 3:00?

  • @mNmz013 Latin.

  • @mNmz013 It's latin.

  • this is one of my fav. songs

  • "A tale of a man and a monster"

As a kid Quasimodo was the monster and Frollo the man, now that I'm older I see that Frollo is the monster and Quasimodo the man (:

  • @Geertos13 Yeh, when I let my little cousins watch it, I understood from when he goes 'now here is a riddle...'

  • Clopin should be more famous than the Jonas Brothers, his voice is EPIC!

  • @StrangeToledo i know right!

  • Can anyone translate the latin in this? I know that kyrie elesion means lord have mercy, dies irea is day of anger and dies illa is this day, but what does the rest mean?

    Like quantus tremor est futurus?

  • That last note was the most perfect thing ever! I didn't even know a man could sing that high O_O I love you Clopin, so very much :D

This movie is fantastic, now I want to watch it :D

  • You know, Snowball doesn't run very fast. You'd think a horse can outrun a woman carrying a baby quite easily, even if she is weaving between buildings.

  • THIS is how you start a movie!!!

  • any one else think clopin can fucking sing add thumbs or comment on my comment !!! immediatley

  • @anyonecanjoin99 god that last note...its...soo...FUCKING ORGAZMICALLY AWESOME!

  • @anyonecanjoin99 that last note its like "Damn" its so hot

  • @anyonecanjoin99 Clopin is fucking amazing

  • @anyonecanjoin99 Yes. I do think that. But what more is there to say? He's amazing.

  • @anyonecanjoin99 YES! Like in all the old classics everyone could sing so HIGH! It amazes me....

  • @anyonecanjoin99 i agree with you 100% :)

  • @anyonecanjoin99 I´m agreed!!!

  • @anyonecanjoin99 i think his singing is what music should really be, not all this lady gaga crap.

  • @anyonecanjoin99 Damn straight. He can sing amazingly.

  • @anyonecanjoin99 Lol I just wrote a comment exactly like this one!! =D I LOVE CLOPIN'S VOICE/CHARACTER.

  • @anyonecanjoin99 he sounds like the singer from trans siberian orchestra GREAT VOICE :D

  • Who is the one person who disliked this?! D":

  • *evil giggle* my cousin was the supervising animator for Clopin. I found this out AFTER I named him my favourite character. I have great respect for my cousin now :P

I love this movie simply for the raw horror factor in it with the corrupt Frollo (Hellfire song) and the way that the people were treated so badly. Everyone became so friggin touchy about movies that offend no one that they don't make them like this anymore. Disney, WATCH YOUR OLD MOVIES AGAIN: GET BACK TO MAKING MOVIES THAT COUNT!!

  • @AlbinoNineTailedFox Mike Surrey is your cousin? Sweet! He also animated Timon from TLK and Ray from PatF. What did you think of those characters?

  • @AtarahDerek I love Timon. I haven't actually had a chance to see PatF yet :'( But I love the clips I've seen of Ray. Actually, I and each of my cousins and siblings born before '94 have original sketches of Timon. It's really cool

  • @AlbinoNineTailedFox OMG LUCKY 8O

  • @AlbinoNineTailedFox Wooooowwww.....! Awesome!

  • see, this is what MADE disney. They are stepping back on the right track with the princess and the frog movie, i didn't like it, but it was a good step none the less.

    and one other question

    when the choir is singing

what language is it that they are speaking in

    is it latin or wat

  • @DreGon451

    Yeah its latin.

I also agree with what you were saying about disney getting back on the right track though I didn't like the movie. It was good they stepped back into animation.

  • This one song has more soul in it than Montana, Jonas and Highschool musical.

Actually this is so good its not to compared to them. I think I'll buy this and Hercules so when I have kids I can show them something I loved when I was a kid.

  • @Ganthrithor13 I hear that.

When I'm old enough to have my own place, I will take all of my old disney tapes with me. I have almost every disney classic movie ever made. The only one I don't have is Hunchback of Notre Dame. I never had it growing up, and ever since I first watched it, I have felt deprived. If I ever have kids, I will show them this movie when they're about 7 or 8, or when I think they are old enough not to be scared by it. I know if they are anything like me, they will love it.

  • oh my gosh!!!!! I absolutely LOVE clopin's voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and this whole movie is epic!!!! why can't there be any movies like these today?

  • My favorite Disney movie of all time :]

  • @Remember2fly1 mine 2 so much better than the stuff crapped out by disney now

    -_-

  • Kyrie Eleison, Lord have mercy. It'd seem that most of the lyrics within the cathedral songs are in latin. Fitting, because France is mostly Catholic. I'm Eastern Orthodox, but I still think these psalms are beautiful and their lyrics moving.
