The symbols that are in Harry Potter come from MANY sources, mainly from Legends, old mythologies and supersistion. This was a decision made by JK to make her books have some weight and feel like there is a rich history in the world she has created. They do NOT come from the modern day idea of "witchcraft". They are not trying to brain wash you.
