You are tired, the land around you is being destroyed and your girlfriend is either dead or missing. running away or facing more trials is a tough choice...
While it took longer, I think the game was better for only having 1 developer. A big game, with so many developers, has all those potentially conflicting viewpoints and styles. With only 1 person, yes it'll take far longer, but it feels far more focused and solid. Nothing is half-done because someone didn't feel it wasn't right.
The game itself is really impressive and fantastic, although I don't think the whole "one person did it all" is that big of a deal, lots of people know how to program - thats the hardest part, making those graphics would have been pretty easy, and chiptune music isn't super hard either. I'm not knockin' it tho - like I said I love the game.
Are you kidding me? It is incredibly difficult to program, especially at this level. Pixel not only composed the music (without any knowledge of how to properly compose music so it sounds well done) but also created all of the sprites and environments himself. He had to program all multiple endings and how each item could effect another's existence.
He designed each animation for each character, oh believe me I could go one. He had to learn programming by scratch, deal with day to day life and still showed the dedication to this project despite the exertion and length. This is no small feat. How about showing some respect to its creator, as belittleing everything he did isn't exactly "not knockin' it".
@Bidon45 By all means, go out of your way to make a game that stands up to Cave Story by yourself, and then put it up on the internet for free while still needing to make a living... Idiot
@Bidon45 You're clearly not involved in the gaming industry...
I'm attending my third year at a game dev high school, and I can say that it would take about the combined skill and knowledge of half my class to complete a game of this size and standard in a year. The programming and graphics aren't HARD, but they're time consuming as hell and what's REALLY HARD is designing gameplay. This game has the best flow I've seen in any platformer since the classic Mario games.
I bet you guys didn't know that he wrote everything that was used for this. He wrote Organya which is the synthesizer that cave story uses. He made ika chan (which I'm sure was to test water mechanics for cave story). The musis is his own composition, the art is his own art, and the engine is his own engine, built from the ground up.
Most game developers don't even write their own engines anymore. And usually hire another guy to come up with the musical score of the game.
@Bidon45 In my head, it's also easy to program a game, and in my head... it's easy to make a good storyline, graphics and music. But to create a game like this... well, that's just impossible. Making a game takes allot more then just program and create some graphics. Cave Story has been made perfect before it was released. It has everything pixel wanted it to have, to create a game like this requires patience and allot of love.
@darklordmol99 I agree, I made it quite clear that I have great respect for him and the game and I think its a masterpiece really. All I'm saying is that I don't think its that surprising or a big deal that it was made by a single person. In FACT.... I'd be surprised if it was made by a team, because you're more likely to find masterpieces made by one man, because the idea/concept isnt polluted by multiple minds with slightly different ideas of how the game should look/feel. Know what I mean?
The Doctor has the flowers, the Mimigas are kidnapped, Curly's probably dead somewhere since you lost her after the fight with the fish... Prof. Booster was even hopeless, begging you to find Sue and evacuate. Who knows why you just turned down Kazuma's logical request to flee with him... little do you know it'll save the world.
after all the struggle during the game, all the funny scenes, and the not so funny ones. you suddenly fall into an empty world full of sadness and the whole scenery turns so melodramatic that chills of sorrow crawl up your spine. Kazuma wants you to flee with him, but you feel so wrong to do so, to give up everything you fought for all the time! And thus you decide to face the horror, you decide to stand up against this goddarn doctor and his twisted mind! <3
curly can be saved if you drained the water
then you can meet her in the plantation in amnesia
then you need to the graveyard to found ma pignon , i think everybody know that...

Call me hipster, but I think I liked Cave Story more when it wasn't so popular...

And remember that only a single person did all of that. That is a feat, and is a skill you can't over look.
