85 isnt fast, but that wasnt the point of the 4.0. The 4.0 has a great power band that put down torque well, because that makes it a billy goat for climbing. dana 30's arnt shit, they worked great in jeeps because they are light weight yet can take a beating. Dana 35's are shit, thank goodness most cherokees shipped with the chrysler 8.25 rear axle. Long live the xj's! :-)
i got a 93 cheerekee and i gota say i love the thing, 220k miles still going strong, best thing i love is going over the speedomitor witch tops 85, when i can almost hit 100 in it.
When i bought the Jeep last year it was sitting in this guys driveway for 6 years. So thats why it has low miles. The dana 30 and 35 has nothing to do with the Jeeps reliability. And no the Jeep does not have a crap drivetrain.Get on MSN autos and look at The Cherokee most years had a 5/5 star reliability rating and all years for the Jeep Wrangler have a 5/5 star reliability rating. The 80s AMC Jeep are just as reliable as todays Jeeps. But i think AMC built a better Jeep then Chrysler.
@randomhero713 Idiots in charge at Jeep.. Getting rid of the Comanche and especially the Cherokee was the stupidest thing they ever did......... bombed ever since... duh
I get conflicting stories on the merger/ break up of AMC/Renault.Was it in 87? 94?Who do you all think is correct? Answer: ....In September 1997 all of AMC and Renault were renamed "Eagle". Yes! American Motors became the Jeep/Eagle division of Chrysler. Chrysler was obliged to buy parts from Renault for a couple of years and make cars out of them. This is why I am correct about my 88 Jeep being a "AMC "Jeep. The parts ARE all AMC! Mystery solved.
My mother has a 1994 Jeep Cherokee XJ two door, two wheel drive, Wit the ol idiot lights, With no option with 4 wheel drive, It doesnt have the lever by the shift, Does anyone know what years IT MIGHT BE?
MY 88 Comanche has a 7-Slot front grill ..........ALL the ones ive seen has a 9 slot grill. whatsup with that I wonder. Personally I think AMC built better Jeeps
@mopar8903 seems like late 80s on up had the 10 slot. ...i like the 6 better, but now have a 10 because it came with the front clip i put on. i also decoded mine and its an Eliminator, which i figured it was due to the stripes,Upgraded interior, factory Tach,10 hole Aluminum wheels.Has a sunroof, which I HATE lol
@97warlock Overall, the quality of vehicles were better back then. They used metal, not plastic for nearly every part. Of course, the plastic in today's Jeeps absorb impact when one is in an accident. I love the Comanche and will either get one or a Scrambler one day. But I also love my Liberty :D
@jakesaintsrow123 that is probably the most retarded response ever. Anyone can claim this and that. Oh my dads brand new truck needed a new one of these the moment he drove off the lot. Those responses are crap. Jeeps are crap, and always have been crap.
Really Jeeps are crap. Then why is there a 1991 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 engine sitting in my driveway with 143400 miles on it and it runs really good. All the people i have talked to that have owned Jeeps say they are among the most reliable SUV they have ever owned and one of the guys had a 99 Jeep GC with 293k miles. And there is a junk yard with 5 wrecked Cherokees and 1 Wrangler, all had 250+ thousand miles on them. FYI the 4.0 engine is one of thee Best engines ever built.
@WedidLandONtheMOON wow 143400 miles, thats sure a lot. Thats awesome, people can claim anything they want on the internet :-). My land cruiser has 295000 miles and is running great. Whats your point? The over all reliability on most 80's vehicles was crap. Because an engine is still running good, rock on it had a good engine.
@flight2k5 How about my 89 Cherokee with the original motor and original 5 speed tranny at 301983 miles? Why, I even have the original dana 35 on the rear and dana 30 on the front. No lift, everything is stock. You quoted that the Peugot tranny was crap and you were right. Not all jeeps were manual and Jeep only had the Peugot in service for a few years before switching over to the AX-15. Funny, the AX-15 is also used in Toyota's as well. Hmm.
@flight2k5 Not defensive. I own a Jeep. I also own other old cars as I like to fix them up as a hobby. I'm a mechanic by trade. I get irritated when people mention stuff with out doing research. You were right about the Peugot tranny being bad, it is. Which is why it had the shortest run out of any manual tranny used in Jeep. The 4.0 has been noted many times as one of the most Reliable gas engines manufactured and mass produced in any vehicle.
The AX-15 is such a reliable transmission, that Toyota, and Chevy *to name a few* use it in there vehicles. The AX-15 is manufactured my Asin Warner, the same company who also supplies the Auto tranny used in Jeeps as well as Many Toyota trucks.
if they brought old jeeps (2001 or earlyer) back... i'd buy each model :p
