  • Im so confused. Y is it a prototype? And whats that mean? And y is it the only one left?

  • nice one if it wasnt for back to the future i would never of known about this car

  • @OldestManInCanada: Had the company managed to stay afloat until the 1984 model year, they'd have gotten the Twin Turbo version into the market.

@threezero1944t: No. The prototype used a 4-cylinder Citroen engine which it still had at the time this video was shot. To my knowledge it hasn't been replaced. The production DeLoreans ALL had PRV V-6 engines.

  • @Dave1982 Yes, Im aware of the PRV, and the citroen 4. I know he had a rotary motor in the works at one point. Thought it was a citroen rotary too.

  • Did this have a wankel? If so is it still running it?

  • They should have made a more powerful version of this car

  • @OldestManInCanada

They couldnt. They had to comply with the U.S emissions laws. People always forget that when this car was built, it was no longer the muscle car era, it was the 80's and the rules have changed, they were forced to cut performance

  • Actually the New Castle, PA / Youngstown, OH area dealer working with PPG (proper paint for stainless steel) in Pittsburgh, PA

painted at least one DeLorean in RED (request by Owner) -- it looked great!

I actually saw this car at his dealership in 1982/83 !!

  • the only thing i dont like this car is that it only comes in one color

  • @ronjonsk8er631 because its polished stainless steel

  • @ronjonsk8er631 Then you don't like DeLoreans. The stainless steel is what makes a DeLorean a DeLorean. If you want cooler look at a Bricklin. Basically the same car, but uses acrylic paint instead of steel.

  • @TheARDENWOOD The bricklin was nothing like the Delorean. Only thing in common was they both have gullwing doors.

  • @threezerol944t You missed the point entirely. The cars have history and gullwing doors in common. The front ends are very different yes, but the key difference between the two cars is the stainless steel.

The stainless steel is what makes a Delorean a Delorean. NOT the gullwing doors or rear engine. Its that metal, take that feature away and your left with a sharp angled briklin TYPE car. Just a generic car with gullwing doors as a selling point. Keep Deloreans naked.

  • @TheARDENWOOD The bricklin shares no history with the Delorean. Malcom Bricklin is a liar. That would be the Lotus esprit. While I agree stainless looks good, and is unique, even without the steel its not by any means generic, like the bricklin. The only thing the bricklin, and D have in common is gullwing doors. Even the way the doors operated was totally different. Their are so many "key" differences, not enough room to list them here.

  • the production model is a far better looking car, and feels more "expensive" than this one...

  • no the first prototype was in 1976 and this is the one no joke look it up

  • SHINEY!!!

  • 0.58 seconds - Driver looses control of car and runs down Delorean enthusiasts.

  • wonderful i like this prototype more than the official car.

  • Nah, kinda looks more like a camaro of the same era

  • I have read Delorean's Biography, by John Z. DeLorean with Ted Schwarz and the book is sitting right here next to me now. It explains all of the "dope" scandal ,etc. He was a genius. When he worked for GM...he came up with tons of ideas and working systems that they used, and were good ideas, and they worked. He was honest..and he got SET UP. yeah..your good ole guvment set him up, and shut him down. You think the big 3 would let him get successful??? yeah right.

  • crazayjj, his book was very interesting, he explained how his dad used to create a prototype for an engine block out of wood in their own house.

  • How much ? ^^'

    My dream this car *_*

  • It was sold at a RM auction last year fro $100.000. I think a museum bought it.

  • HE APPEARS ON SCREEMN AT :35...WEIRD

  • No, that is not Biff. Tom Wilson was NOT at this show.

  • @Dave1982 lmao BTTF lovers swear they see everything. lol. I'm glad they made the last revisions into production. Though this car is unique IMO the final product looks amazing.

  • IS THAT BIFF IN THE RED POLO SHIRT???

  • Does anyone know, approximately, how many 'DMC 12- 1979 Protoypes' went into production, and/or how many still exist today in prestine condition?

  • I think the 'DMC-12' protoype was released somewhere around 1979, 2-years prior to release of the final redesigned model. Now, beside the gull-wing door windows, and the rear tail lights what else looks different b'tween this model and the final 1981 design.

  • Pretty much everything. There are only broad similarities between Prototype 1 (seen in the video) and the production DMC-12. The styling, powertrain, interior design, and even the basic construction methods were totally redone.

  • In 1975 Lamborghini in Italy manufactured 12 DeLorean cars for early crash testing. The company operated under the name DMI: Delorean Automobili Italia.

Of these cars 4 are known to survive today. Not much is known about them and they were made of ordinary steel not stainless steel.

  • any links that you know of that show pictures of these original steel cars that were made for testing ?

  • DeLorean was charged with cocaine possession, went to trial, defended himself, and he was found not guilty due to entrapment.

  • John Delorean wasn't a dope head and a DMC motors in Texas is re-manufacturing 12 a year.

  • Fuckin A

Now thats what i Call a Shine!

  • yes, yes. But nothing can thouch this car.. I mean NOTHING! Period!

This is THE, One and only : Concept Delorean!

  • Actually this is THE CONCEPT Delorean, the true FIRST prototype was the second car built which was destroyed by Lotus. This one had NOTHING of the production car.The second car had the drivetrain, and I think the frame of the production cars. But everyone refers this as proto1.NOTHING on this car made it into production making it into a concept of what the Delorean SHOULD have been and NOT what it became. The 2nd car was in line into what it became.Making it the FIRST prototype of the production car.

  • DeLorean <3

  • The Delorean engine is a 2.8 liter PRV V6. PRV stands for Peguot, Renault, Volvo. You can get a 197 hp version of the PRV V6 from DMC of Houston.

  • i dont think people buy it because of the engine.

  • man dude the stainless steel is fucking awesome!!!

  • yes thats why you have -6 comments now -7

  • that was a heavy car being made of stainless steel

  • Not really. This car only weighed about 2800 pounds. It's stainless steel over a fiberglass body with Lotus frame.

  • That is so awesome

The first one is definitely my favorite prototype out of the three

  • I want one!

  • i wonder is that the only delorean prototype

  • There was one made of wood that I know of before the company started. There was also a few others made just for display purposes while they were figuring out the final design on the car. But this car was the only working prototype made that I know of. Johnny Carson sat in this car when Delorean was trying to get him as a investor. Carson got one of the first production DMC-12's with a bad alternator. It failed when Carson was driving the car home.

  • no there were approx 28, many constructed by Lotus, most destroyed at least three remain plus this one

  • @lcw288

Its the only one thats still around. The other prototype was destroyed

  • The only thing that sucks about SST is that it is hard to keep clean.

If you touch any of the SST body panels, it will leave a smudge mark, and look horrible.

Ask anyone who has a stainless kitchen appliance, and a small child.

But when kept clean, the DMC-12 is one of the most beautiful cars ever made!

  • DMC sells stainless cleaning kits for Deloreans. It's not really that bad. I've seen a video from DMC open house where they can repair the panels. Someone said you can use turpintine as well. I don't know if that's true or not. I saw a DMC at a car show a couple of days ago with a 210 hp twin turbo engine from Island Turbo. I figured the car had a 0-60 of 6 seconds.

  • I don`t care if the doors hit another car in a car park-I love that car!!!!

  • The doors would never hit another car in a parking lot. DeLorean gull wings require a mere 14 inches of clearance, compared to up to 40 for standard car doors.

  • ya i own one. beautiful. but the doors DO hit the car next to you when some jackass at macy's in his suburban decides to park 1/2 inch from you, and a hummer pulls in on the other side!

  • I typically park my delorean driver's side door inches from walls and open them just fine. You need clearance UP, not out.

  • The prototype used a Citroen 4-pot engine, and the actual car used an underpowered Renault-Volvo V6 engine. They should have used the engine from a Lotus Esprit in it, afterall, they did look very similar.

  • Even the Lotus engine at that time wouldn't have helped power this beast; it was too damn heavy. Engines at that time period were notoriously underpowered in general. They produced one prototype Delorean with a twin-turbo, which was the only car they made that could get out of its own way. It was John D's personal car I believe. Saw it at auction a couple of years ago; don't know where it is now.

  • dang they put it in cution they shoudlnt have they should have kept it for john as his only twin turbo Delorean and have it as for show car

  • the PRV engine is not underpowered, just restricted by US emission rules.

    Uk spec had higher BHP.

Esprit engine was pretty poor reliability, not fantastic BHP (check google) and now cost a fortune to rebuild even in the UK unlike the PRV

  • Awesome first Delorean ever! That was auctioned of on e-bay a few months ago for a $100.000. Did you get Katie Delorean's autograph?

  • Yes I did gether autograph, but not at this show.

  • The Most Futuristic Car ever made!!! no one have this mixture between beauty and power... even it never reached more than 210 Km

Bricklins are better... much nicer interiors and exterior

  • I googled one of those things, honestly I have to say it doesn't hold a candle to a DeLorean. Might as well be a kit car from it's looks and it's construction. Neat, but no comparision for a DeLorean as a whole.

  • yes it does, firt of all it had the gull wings first, a V8, and a much sportier exterior....and its Canadian

  • Mercedes had gullwing doors before anyone else. The Bricklin is awesome looking for sure, but rear-engine and stainless? Come on, it's no contest.

  • BUT it DID GET JZD inspired to start his own Company to produce a 2 seater NO PAINT..GULLWING SPORTCAR..SAFETY VEHICLE..basically fashioned in THE SAME likeness and time span era as the Bricklin.

  • Bricklin? Are you crazy? It may be tied with the Delorean for the crappiest car ever made, but I have to say that as far as looks go, the Delorean beats the Bricklin hands down; interior and exterior.

  • Car of my Dreams!

  • I'm gonna get one... Someday

  • i saw that exact car while before it was restored, whil i was getting mine fixed.

  • The Most Futuristic Car ever made!!! no one have this mixture between beauty and power... even it never reached more than 210 Km/h

  • mmm stainless steel car...

it'll never rust, but it'll dent like a freakin bastard

  • That was kick ass that John DeLorean's daughter was riding shotgun. I saw her before I read your description. Cool Video!

  • That stainless steel boothing is brilliant. Love it, want it, need it.

  • Nice delorean...Prototypes of anything are usally really hard to find!

  • Man I wanted to go to that so bad.

  • WOW !!! ABSOLUTELY COOOOOOOOOL !!!!!
