  • OK, my son is out with concussion, and has permanent stretch marks on his back from an illegal cross-check from behind into the boards, ultimately causing a hairline fracture to his lumbar vertibra ... you don't NEED to do that ... get back to me from YOUR hospital bed. He is now a patient at the Dartmouth Sports Concussion program from being hit into the boards head first. I get hockey --- been a part of it all my life --- Ify ou rely on being a goon, youa renot playing the GAME.

  • This is one very "narrow" video. =p

  • fucking idiots hockey is a hitting sport you assholes

  • The best way would be to eliminate checking from behind the goal line 99% of check from behinds comes from that area. It would also keep USA hockey from overreacting to this!

  • 3:43 if thats not legal, im never playing hockey again.

  • Ya we wouldn't want defense to step up on the forward. We should just let them walk around us while we back up into the net. Thanks USA hockey, what a great idea.

  • This is absurd. The real problem is a total failure by the referees to keep the contact away from the head. I coach in a high school league and I estimate there are 10-15 hits to the head every game with maybe 1 or 2 penalties called.

If the refs can't call a check to the head, how the hell will they enforce this new rule???

Let's protect the head! Come on refs.

  • @jcn0wpf I also coach HS and bantam levels and agree with this entirely. The rest of the blame goes on the numerous crappy coaches and parents out there who encourage the illegal stuff.

  • wow the one that made this ideo are a stubid retard.

  • Iceburg wtf are u talking about players only get paralyzed when there hit from BEHIND into the boards

  • u dumb asses wait till u get hit open ice like the "illegal" hits and get a concussion or get paralyzed. if u think this rule is stupid then your a dumb fuckin bitch who just plays hockey to kill people and u probably get alot of penelaties dont u.

  • Why don't people grow some balls? There are ways to open ice hit that are completely legal. Im a bantam defenseman and I LOVE knocking the shit out of people and the only penalty ive gotten in 3 years was last weekend for TOO MANY MEN ON THE ICE. If you cant take a hit, play some fucking soccer and quit bitching about how we play our sport.

  • This is the gayest proposal ever those so called "illegal" hits are so weak my grandma could have done that. If this rule gets passed i think i'll protest by destroying kids more than usual.

  • is this some sort of joke? if i wanted to rub one out i'd go to the bathroom. i agree with getting rid of hits to the head and hits from behind but this is ridiculous. most of these hits he is showing are beautiful, clean checks. whoever proposed this was obviously softer than puppy shit when he played

  • THIS IS DUE TO JACKASS PARENTS PUSHING THEIR 12 YR OLD KIDS TO PLAY HIGHSCHOOL LEVEL HOCKEY, WHY NOT HAVE A MINIMUM AGE OF 13 YRS OLD TO PLAY HS HOCKEY????

  • lol people seem pissed lol but wait till u get your shit rocked too hard

  • This makes me sick. Why don't we just go on ahead and make it an official rule that all players must wear a pink too-too? Seems fitting.

  • usa hockey should be embarrassed to put this bullshit up if the kid has the puck and gets put through the glass then its his fault for not getting rid of it quick enough or having his head down.. this wont do anything..if i ever get a penalty called on me for a hit like those "illegal" ones ill just sit two minutes and then actually run kids..give the ref a nice fuck you

  • fuck this! i play physical. boo hoo. 3:40 was a perfect hit. perfect. this is pussy shit. its too easy to dangle if your not worried about getting put on your ass.fuck this. it this point its not even hockey. im going to continue putting people on their asses and evryone else should too.

  • Ok, im a very physical hockey player and if you are going to tell me and along with the vast majority of hockey players who arent afraid to hit or get hit that we shouldnt hit hard and hit only to get the puck then your insane. The fans love the contact, they love the fights if you dont want hitting in hockey lets just cut off our blades and play ringuette?

  • Hey Doc, try Google Chrome.

  • Hey Doc, try FireFox.

  • Watched this at the USA Hockey officials seminar at Planet Ice in Johnstown, PA.

  • I mean TheRedSnapper44. Sorry

  • I have to agree with Redsnapper33. If these kids were properly and consistently coached on checking right from the beginning we wouldn't be dealing with these rule changes. Checking completely changes the game and it will not be hockey without it.

  • Bullshit. I am no goon at all at 5'4 120 pounds but I loved to hit. And last night I get a two game suspension for hitting a kid with the puck on his stick. He's looking down at the ice and got his shit rocked, but somehow that turns into a suspension. I am also a ref and think this is bullshit. Hockey is slowly turning into a pussy sport.

  • @Freeezeyz

The problem with USA hockey is there total disconnect from the youth game. They create rules that are not inherant of NCAA or NHL, yet they want to advance youth hockey into higher levels.Officials and coaches struggle with inconsistant coaching and officiating at all levels, leaving the game to penalities in the teens/20ties , shorting the player and the advancement of the game. In 2010, they installed the new head contact rule, I have pictures of head contact fractures & no calls?

  • @Freeezeyz I completely agree, just yesterday i was given a two game suspension for skating up with the puck, and hipchecking the guy that was trying to get the puck away.

  • It ain't even hockey anymore

  • THIS IS RIDICULOUS. USA hockey wants to turn the game into a non-check game. If a player has the puck you should have the right to seperate him from the puck. Elbows down, shoulder to chest should not a penalty!!! USA hockey is a joke

  • I like how they give examples of the USA girls team checking. Make sure you kids grow a pony tail too!

  • These rules r just about as retarded as the ppl who make them!!!!!! STOP listening 2 these overprotective parents!!!! WHO CARES ABOUT THESE STUPID RULES!!!! It's a sport no matter how many crappy rules u make somebody is ALWAYS gonna get hurt!!! I'm 11 and I HATE THESE RULES!!!! This is hockey NOT community dance class!!! Let the game go on!!!!

  • Why is it so hard for you guys to understand that this is an EXPLANTATORY VIDEO about what will be legal and illegal AFTER the rule change? Agree 100 percent on the fact that they could have solved this if there was better coaching and refereeing, both of which is horrendous at the in-house level, but that does not exist, so they don't have much of a choice. Honestly, a better approach would have been to create a dual track for recreational hockey - 1 checking, 1 non.

  • I am a Level 3 coach and during my level 3 seminar, one of the speakers stated that USA Hockey's biggest problem in the loss of players from the squirt to peewee level. This is their way of retaining players...more girls will now play PW and other kids that normally might lose interest due to physical nature of sport.

They should have simply created a new PW level, like recreational or something like that.

If this was so great for player development, why wasn't it implemented 20 years ago

  • USA Hockey is just an insurance company. Bantams will be next as they don't want to pay claims. In my opinion they are riding the safety card to reduce their costs and increase revenue. It's all business and not about the kids.

  • Honestly, this is a joke...A lot of those hits in the second half were legal hits. Hockey is a rough sport. Your going to take a cheap shot, get hit in the head, etc...especially if your shorter like I am. Get over it. Get speed, toughen up, and keep the game the way it is. Hitting from behind, boarding, and other hits with a blatant intent to injure, sure, make the call. But c'mon, if you can't accept the fact that hockey gets rough, you should probably consider a different sport.

  • @Nitrox1491 What they are showing is how the new checking rule will affect Pewee level (12 and under) hockey, and not Bantam (14 and Under) and above. They are not specifically showing examples of illegal checks, but what will no longer be allowed at the 12 and under classifications. Angling, pinching off along the boards, 50/50 puck battles, leaning, body positioning, and generally battling hard, and using ones strength and balance in front of the net, or on the boards, is still allowed.

  • So many of the supposed illegal hits look like they should have been called as boarding penalties right then and there.

  • Jokeful, Why not just pad the boards and use a foam puck while you are at it ... I played D2 college and this is a shame to the sport. I'm only 5'7" and would much rather take a hit then be rubbed up against... Hockey is a rough and tough sport... get over it.

  • My kids will one day play hockey so thins pisses me off and the blue puck was bad enough, I played my whole life with a big boy puck lol. It must've been all the bitchy southerners who have no hockey culture. As a Minnesotan i think we should not have to abide by the rules of those who can't play hockey im pretty sure the east coast is with me on this too. If we aren't a bunch of bitches we shouldn't be forced to play like some

  • @Hallmark17 there is no DII college hockey

  • if i wanted to be a bitch id have chosen tennis not hockey...

  • bullshit. i'm 17 and considering quitting for my last year before i go to college. this isn't a game for faggots. if you can't take a check then hockey isn't for you. man up usa hockey this is a joke

  • Its about time you take out the illegal hits. This will force coaches to actually coach and kids to actually learn how to play hockey and not just skate and kit. Many kids only know how to get the puck by hitting and not with any skill.

  • Hockey is a contact sport, don't get rid of hits that are legal (or what you guys call "illegal").

  • The hit at 2:41, is a legal check. Since when is that not playing the puck? The main reason for a check is to separate the player from the puck, and checks aren't meant to be gentle. He didn't go hands to the head, he went hands to the shoulder. If you can't handle getting checked, don't play hockey.

  • @Jonezz65 Not a legal check even in checking clarification. Extended his arms to check the player. Have to use your shoulder or hip to separate the opponent from the puck.

  • Is youth football going all two hand touch?

I never understand why the USA refuses to follow anything Canada does? You would think they would look to Canada, and model their system on them since they are the best at hockey

  • USA hockey sucks

  • If these hits are "illegal" why were there mo penalties called?

  • @jumpinjoey51 what they are saying is they will be illegal under the proposed rule for PeeWees.

  • @jshherman I'm saying, why were these not penalties in the games? e.g. 3:15 3:09 Don't give us examples of "illegal" hits when, in fact, they are legal

  • Yeah lets let kids who are like 5'10 and 150 lb throw there weight around for the first time, this will cause more injuries, let the kids do it when they are young so they learn.

  • bulllshit x1042642517942192795421974274184721974815,

my parents even hate this gay rule

  • Comment removed

  • Not sure I understand what is wrong with an intimidating hit if it is legal. Intimidation plays a role in every sport, no? If an intimidating hit causes a forward to not come up ice aggressively, too bad. If that is the case, they should eliminate body contact at ALL levels. If it is truly about the skating and only the skating, then play no checking at every level.

  • Screw USA Hockey, here come all the independant leagues! Just like no dodge ball in gym, we are raising a bunch of powder puffs!

I will take my 4 boys to an independant league that allows checking (full checking not this oops excuse me I bumped into you BS).

USA Hockey as an organization is on the way out and they can take their ADM with them!

  • The lousy defense you see in today's NHL, the panic hockey, the mindless head shots, the blind passes into no-mans land, the clear up the boards to the other teams point...can all be traced back to crappy coaching. And USA hockey takes the lead with it's worthless certification program. Today's kids seem more interested with boucing pucks off their sticks like a circus clown then actually learning to how to skate, check and play the game with any intelligence.

  • USA hockey continues a 30 year history of failure by getting it wrong again. I played youth hockey on an elite Squirt team that went 53-3-1..and never lost a game in the US. We checked...voted MVP PW in my state at age 12 , went from PWs to playing D1 High School at age 13. Kids today aren't taught to skate 1st and think checking is throwing your arms into someones head. (I figured skated till age 7, and learned to skate head up and check with shoulders and hip). Coaching Cert process is a joke.

  • its not a girl sport this is wrong i always finnish my check with them embaressed

  • The people who think this rule is crap and that USA hockey will suffer is not a hockey player, or a slow, hack of a hockey player. You keep living in the past. Have you seen hockey in the last ten years? Keep lifting weights thinking like a football player, while skill and speed kicks your ass every game. Nobody is getting rid of checking, just getting rid of non-hockey plays. Your professional wrestling view of hockey is dead. Your kind of hockey is a dinosaur.

  • @ivan99x Absolutely agreed. If we ONLY want big guys to play (and only men, not women) then this plea for earlier and earlier checking is going to lead to that. Allowing kids to start checking at Mites would be totally irresponsible. Kids at that age (7, 8, 9) vary HUGELY in their growth patterns, and you can have a kid 4 foot 9 playing against someone 5 foot 2 who outwghs them by 25-40 pounds. If emphasis is allowed on just taking out the other player, boys with later growth spurts won't stay.

  • and the back checking clip, the kid had the puck it was a great backchecking job on the red teams back check

  • im from andover and if this happens, i will be so pissed off, this is disgusting and the kids 12 years old can suck it up, illeagal hits rarely happen.

  • This is horseshit. Out of all thier examples of an "illegal" hit, maybe only 1 or 2 could be classified as dirty and justify a penalty. All the other hits were either a player finishing thier check or separating the player from the puck. Good hard clean hockey to me.

  • @jellybeangamers That's what they're saying. They would be mostly legal BEFORE this rule change, but with not allowing checking at this age, they'd be illegal now. Incidental contact would still be fine. Slamming someone just to hurt them would not. You have to be playing the puck.

  • Thank you USA Hockey for ruining the game. In 10 years the % of US players in the NHL will decrease drastically. Canada. Russia, Sweden and the ret of the hockey world thanks you.

  • BAD IDEA.Checking was taken out of pw when I was a pw in the early 80s (if I remember correctly) and checking was obviously restored. Sending kids to high school/ NCAA hockey with virtually no checking experience would be irresponsible of USA Hockey. Furthermore, they will also be sending 15 year old kids to referee peewee games with no idea how to make these calls because the referees will have no checking experience themselves. I have been coaching for over 20 years...this is a bad move.

  • This is contemptible nonsense. I love this game. But if a defenseman cannot stand up a forward coming in with the puck and his head down, the game as we know it will be gone forever.

  • Is'nt F1's duty on the forecheck to play the body and finish his check? This rule WILL SCREW teams with an aggressive forecheck.

  • This would be awful.

  • i have not seen one compelling argument or thread below to convince me this is a wrong proposed rule change... I say focus on skating, skating, skating. 99% of the kids in PW dont know how to check, half the coaches never played hockey and i dont want them teaching my sons how to check. My concern is player development. There is no study that shows moving checking up to bantam will be a competive disadvantage.

  • @catchnrays Its learning how to take a check moreso than trying to do a check. These kids going into bantams are going to be playing the puck with head down and get blasted and more injuries are coming, bad move with no checking.

  • some of those so called ''illegal hits'' looked pretty clean dumbass

  • As a ref, whether I'm right or wrong, I'm going to get yelled at no matter what I called. Thanks for making my job a hell of a lot tougher USA Hockey.

  • just another USA's hockey attempt to ruin the game.

  • Unbelievable. This is a case of "throwing the baby out with the bath water" . I love how USA hockey uses Canadian hockey to show examples. Maybe they would be more comfortable being called the Canadian Hockey Association or CHA! What we need, is train officials, kids, and coaches on good checking. If this doesn't work after 5-10 years, then you take the next step. If USA hockey truly feels this is a good move, then they should be condemned if they ever allow another player to "play up".

  • I'm really dismayed at the comments here. I'm guessing they're mostly made by people who've never played organized, full-contact hockey. If they had, they'd realize that the new rules don't make the game "weak" or "pussified." Rather, they protect young players at an age (11-12) where a greater difference in size and skill level is often present among players. I'll bet the complainers here are the same guys who bitch in C-level beer league about being bumped off a puck.

  • @docciavelli so what happens in high school hockey when seniors have been lifting weights for 2 years and freshman look like 7th graders. Explain how this size difference magicallty dissapears in high school. Explain how lack of checking experience is about to benifit the freshman get out of a corner with the puck as he is trailed by a senior defensman who also plays linebacker on the foootball team and a winger who also plays defense on the lacrosse team.

  • @shahoen Freshman who are that inexperienced and small won't be playing varsity with seniors who are 6'2".

  • @shahoen Assome question wonder if these so called board members realized this? Morons

  • This is just making the situation worse at the Bantam and High School ages... greater size differences in height and weight + increased levels of testosterone and girl friends in the stands!

Body contact should be introduced at Mites!

Can we see who voted which way + their rational?

USA Hockey… If you truly want to fix the situation: introduce @ Mites & fix the refereeing. Develop programs to teach the refs how to control a game…develop proactive not reactive referees.

  • My son would be affected by USA Hockey ramming the rule change through. He checked last year but possibly can't this year. He decided on his own to wait until the vote before accepting the travel team offer. No contact - no play. Considering he played on a team that could only attract 12 kids, this may be the death of his age group within the organization. He watched the video and don't want to be a part of this, noting some of the clips were women's hockey.

  • The Squirt level is where this proposed rule change should take place. These are good rule changes but they should be taught to the younger kids. The sooner you get the kids used to the correct body contact the sooner their stick handling and heads up skills will develop. There will be more injuries if you wait until bantams for full contact, the kids are stronger and faster.

  • Teach players to skate with their heads up, teach good checking early and teach refs to make the calls! The intimidation should come from refs who call bad checks and use the penalties to keep the game under control.

  • This could be fixed without changing any rules or dumbing down the game as some call it. If the officials would simply call the game properly in the first place by penalizing hits that are already illegal (cross checking, checking from behind, boarding, etc.) then the injuries would decrease dramatically. Checking from behind should be illegal all the way up to the NHL and until it is there will always be officials and players that don't understand the difference.

  • Are you kidding me? Those "illegal" hits are love taps, most of them. This game is being pushed toward the contact allowed in Basketball, which is almost none. It's seriously ruining the game.

  • @Jpmg2727 This is exactly the mindset of parents who've never played full contact hockey. I have, and I coach. I can tell you, getting blown up is *never* a "love tap." And if you notice the legal body play along the boards, there's plenty of physicality there. Quebec changed full hitting to a Bantam start, and it hasn't hurt their physicality in Juniors, neither has there been an increase in injuries at that level.

  • @docciavelli A. I'm not a parent. B. I'm a 25 year old whose been playing hockey since I was 4...up till Juniors and played college...I have 21 yrs of experience and played against and with a shitload of players who are now in the NHL. All I'm saying is your basically taking away the "checking" aspect of the game and replacing it with what seems like leans, not hits. It's absolutely ridiculous and NOT good for the sport...Put your kid in basketball if you don't want real contact.

  • Hey turn on your TV and try and find the NHL hockey playoffs on prime time TV, you can’t it’s on Verses! Take checking out of hockey and you might be able to find it on your local PBS channel, if the Wiggles aren’t on.

  • I was going to post my thought but 98% of you agree this is bad. Let me also point out that USA hockey has children officiating games not to mention official that don’t understand the rules now at the youth level. They are going to interpret this as if a player gets knocked down it is a penalty. The problem as someone else posted there is a mix of size and skill level on the ice. I have seen teams sand bag it to win a trophy and I have seen teams pushed up to level they should not be!

  • USA Hockey is a joke. The longer we allow kids to skate with their head down, the more injuries we will create whenever checking finally begins. You want to do it right? Start checking at the Mite level and teach kids to play heads up. The whole notion of USA Hockey clubs for their opinion is a joke. They've already made up their mind. Now you will tell us what we're going to do. You'd think a responsible governing body would be neutral and present both sides of an issue objectively

  • @matthewrechin how do u think i feel, i checked last year and now i cant check this year, tell ne tghis isnt bullshit

  • @matthewrechin they make us all become crosby's

  • @matthewrechin there brains do not have that capabillity of having that quick reaction developing them early would make sense but there not gonna have mites level each other and cause injury so its not a joke

  • i agree if usa hockey would stop listening to the mothers and spend more time on the education and reinforcement of coaching heads up play and body contact from the mite age up we would not be in this debacle that they have created. in my opinion they are ruining the greatest game on earth.

  • @matthewrechin they dont have to skate with their heads down...they caN BE TAUGHT TO PICK YOUR HEAD up to make aplay your head will need to be up without checking cuz more position play will be in tact your argument is very good but hockey will be safer now but that physical aspect is gone and idont like that cuz ima bantam but mite is waaaayyyyy too young!!

  • @matthewrechin I can't agree with you more! USA Hockey is a complete joke and embarassment to the Gordie Howe's, Ted Lindsey's, and Bobby Clarke's who made this game exciting. Watching this style of hockey puts me to slepp as a coach, player, and fan. Play Inline Hockey if you're afraid to get hit....P#$%y!

  • Bantam - NHL all take hits. But not All players r hitters, scorers, play generators nor do they have to be. Checking is 1/5 < of game now, less ~50+ years ago! NHL history is leather helmet and little body protection. So is gear to make it more ruff or 4 protection? NFL w/ QB & Rec protection. Nerfed? How many ConCussions 4 your kids pre 14 and post? CC having life long implications for your 10 yo. Fact is, 14 is ~ the end of huge mental, emo, phys, maturity compared to post 14 or so.

  • What do the kids want to win more, the stanley cup , or the gold medal ?

Don"t try to make us Europe, its a northamerican game.Try having your kid play in a tourney in Canada when its ok to check, but his league in the us

doesn't allow hits. Thats where you lose a step internationally, and your kids get

hurt. Were on the verge of dominating this sport. This would be a step backwards.

  • If your kid does not want to play with contact then put them in a non-contact sport! Whats next, flag football?

  • These videos show "legal" hits which are currently a penalty such as the head shot in the last one. The "illegal" axamples are all ALREADY paenalties! The idea is to seperate the player from the puck and gain possession. Most of the videos did not run long enough to see who got possession but the one you could see, most resulted in the hitting team gaining the puck. That is the idea! The "legal" hits did not accomplish this in most of the videos. This is all just a crock.

  • This is how most adult rec league hockey is reffed. It's great for those of us not getting paid to play hockey but rather have day jobs the morning after our 9pm game. Is the rule proposal for professional hockey? Not sure I would be on board with that.

  • As a player of over46yrs and coach for over 18yrs, I can say this is going to harm the game of hockey. No more exciting center ice hits,no more hits for any reason except incidental contact,COME ON!The later you take to teach and allow checking the more chances you have of bad checking.Bad checking being hitting from behind into the boards, using your stick up high, using your elbow to make the contact(not shouldering someone and your arm comes up as a follow through). Its a tough sport don't ruinit

  • 3:42 was an excellent hit. You're not asking to get rid of "intimidating" body checks, you're looking to get rid of all checking, and keeping pathetic incidental contact and calling it "body checking".

  • many of the PROPOSED "Illegal" hit in this video... ARE ALREADY ILLEGAL NOW!!! If Refs would actually call elbows, blatant headshots and intent to injure.

Get Draconian witht he punishments for wreckless plays, but leave the good clean(not head shot, not interference, not boarding, not charging) hit in the game...

there's only about 3 good clean hits per game anyway, due to bad coaching and worse officiating.

  • Using your elbow to smash a players head into the boards will now be a "legal" hit

    WTF!?

    2:19 of the video

  • @3:50 "just focusing on knocking the player down"

Yea its a hockey tactic to remove player X from the puck. If you take away this aspect of the game you might as well add a 3 point line and free throws. WTF USA hockey.

  • for god sake checking is a part of hockey, you cant turn this sport into tennis and golf. if kids learn the proper way to check at a younger age they will be just fine, if they wait til bantams they will wanna crush people cause they finally get to hit.

  • could not disagree more...standing up a forward by the defense should be legal. The longer you wait to have contact like this...the more serious the injuries will be...contact should be allowed at the mite level. The kids will learn to skate with their heads up instead of down as they do now...

  • THIS IS HOCKEY ! NOT SUNDAY SCHOOL!!!

  • Do people not understand how many kids drop out because they are just 12, or even younger? I spend considerable time coaching/teaching/reassuring pre PW kids in the facts of checking. That it is not so much an issue of size. PW's: are very young. may have no prior hky exp. skates move fast! Pre PW's: intimidated by 'next years checking' often drop out have a choice to play checking or other sports If we want hockey to flourish, HEP points and no checking till Bant is wise! They drop out.
  • @macattak1 What do you think is going to happen now, they will drop out after peewee because there scared of being hit in bantam, Hockey is a physical game like football if a kid is not a physical player then move over to roller hockey. Im not faulting a kid for not wanting to be physical but hockey is a physical sport thats how its designed to be played. canadiens start checking at squirt level JMO

  • @machz800ps significant maturity happens ~12. Football is physcal to start but limited to foot speed and no boards. Also, very large kids often prohibited from playing in own age group due to size, etc. Hockey does not have this. The 160 lb 12 yo is not prohibited from his age group and skates R much faster then foot. Bantam + 4 years of HS. Six years not enough for your kid to learn checking? Problem is too many people here think checking IS the game or that their kid is NHL material.

  • @macattak1 PW's that have no hockey experience? where u live South America, lol. If they ani't played by then they weren't brought up in a hockey family and therefore have little, if any, chance of sticking with it, and thats why they drop out. To further dis your point, Canada starts checking even eartlier and I believe they have more than a couple kids that don't drop out.

  • @wiakevsha215 You a coach? Never had kids that don't start till PW or Bant? Natural athletes or not that decide to try? Had two of them in PW two years ago. One could barely skate. By end of season he was the 2nd highest scorer. Was not aware that one had to be born into 'a hockey family' to be able to play at all let alone be good. Never had a kid move from AZ, So Cal, Tx, etc. and wants to play hockey for the fist time in MN, Dakotas, etc? Yours is a very myopic view of the world.

  • Jake11171 You must not be a coach or ref. Have you never been to a game or hundreds of them where one team is abusive and their coach does not care and any complaint to the ref falls on def ears?

Calfy - Kids getting hurt is of course a symptom of poor coaching. So how are you going to fix that? Your solution? Also, how do over protective parents cause injury to kids? :\

HEP points are the way to go!

  • @macattak1 How am I going to fix poor coaching? Read that out loud and let me know if the light bulb comes on. Over protective parents- They want their kids to be included and be at a certain level. If that level is above their kids ability, they push and complain to nerf the game. When in reality, if your kid cant take a hit, play in-house or roller hockey... bending over backwards to accomodate EVERYONE only destroys the integrity of the game.

  • @calfy What I am hearing and extrapolating is that , for example, football is a very physical sport, thus kids that do not start till ~10th or even 11th grade, since they did not play before, are getting creamed and injured all over the place due to lack of exp. tackling???

If checking did not start till Bantam lvl how is it all of a sudden 'nerfing' the game? That is two years of checking before HS even starts.

Further, please explain logic on why we should Not start checking in Squirts???

  • if you don't want your kids getting bodychecked just sign them up for the local house league.

  • @devilsfan26 House league check also, they would need to move to roller hockey

  • @machz800ps Ah every house league I know of around here is non-checking, I guess it's different depending where you live. Then yeah I guess roller is their only alternative.

  • While I agree that people get hurt and there are hits that everyone can agree are out of line. But the vibe im getting from this is that open ice hits are bad, playing the body, while ignoring the puck is bad. Lets just make this roller hockey on the ice, and take away the tools that make great defensemen. I think there are bigger problems and kids getting hurt is a sympton of poor coaching and over protective parents.

  • Once again I was refering to BLATENT head shots right in front of the ref - they chose to ignore it. The refs can't be evertwhere - but they have to stop ignoring head contact 3 feet away. My son makes more body contact than his team combined and never hurt any other players. Got 1 boarding penelty entire season because his coach won't allow his players to play dirty hockey. Not true with alot of other coaches with a win at all cost attitude. Alot kids got needlessly hurt this year.

  • All of the proposed legal "hits" are simple body contact legal in every adult no-check league, or the NBA. It's a contact sport. If you don't want to get hit, take up golf. The body check is a very unique aspect of hockey. I'll go so far as to say it is the soul of the sport. Don't kill it. Just because Bettman wants to ruin the NHL doesn't mean we have to follow suite in the lower leagues.

  • I thought I was clear about the coaching as well as officiating. I know the refs can't see everything. I said BLATENT head contact. Meaning the ref is standing 3 feet away watching it take place - and ignoring the head shot. For some reason this season the refs chose to ignore this type of play. I never yell at refs but I know parents get out of control. My son's coach WILL NOT allow his skaters to play cheap shot hockey. You're right, alot of coaches do allow that type of play.

  • Dear Friends,

I am not sure, other than removing legal and necessary checking from U12 how this changes anything, since checking has always served the sole purpose of removing the player from the puck.

While NHL has become primarily television entertainment, IIHL rules have been fairly clear for a long time. When teaching checking, coaches begin with the idea of skill and puck control, and few good coaches allow the use of body contact for intimidation.

    Teach good checking early.

  • I hope USA hockey is prepared for their insurance to go up! There will be a significant rise in injuries once this is implemented. Kids that have great hands but have their head down the whole way are going to get hurt more because of the size difference at the Bantam level. If they want to help kids stay in the sport longer and develop them into good hockey players, then go the other way. Let them hit at the squirt level! Some of the examples that this video shows as illegal hits are fine

  • The problem is terrible officiating and coaches teaching their skaters to play the head, not the body. After an 80 game season, the amount of blatent and brutal head contact allowed was a disgrace. The penalties for head contact have to made draconian to stop coaches from teaching this type of play. And the refs HAVE to do their job. They're not on the ice to make judgement calls. Head contact is head contact. The players have to learn to control their bodies and be taught legal checking.

  • Terrible officiating huh? Are are you a ref? If you can do better take the test and get out there and do some games! Yeah there are officials who are not so good, but there are just as many if not more poor coaches and players and especially....PARENTS! USA Hockey requires us to be recertified every year and we are annually evaluated. Those who don't cut it don't get games. Coaches should have to attend a ref clinic and pass the test. Most of them don't know the rules, so how can they teach!

  • @njethird a ref's job is to make split second judgement calls for the entire game. Only experience is going to help improve that so the call is consistent and meets the standards of USA hockey.

Also I don't agree checking needs removed from the game, however players who don't play the puck and just check are looking to just hurt people and that isn't what USA Hockey wants to happen and so that's why these changes are being suggested.

Also the game is changing and USA is just trying to keep up

  • I think this proposal is a great idea! Let's teach players about skill and finesse rather than brute strength. Cutting a player a off to pick up the puck requires more skill than pushing them from behind and then trying to grab the puck. It's also usually more effective. Body contact is an essential part of the game, but let's teach them how to do it effectively and safely. The game's much more satisfying that way.

  • @mshannon80 Have you ever watched a game of hockey, played or coached? You have no idea what you are talking about! This would change the game for the worse. Think of what is going to happen when all of the sudden they start getting hit at a much faster pace abd are not prepared for it!

  • i like your idea, but please keep looking for better clips/examples: several of these "incidental contact" are confusing at best (discretion calls), and don't say "sticks ARE on the ice", they are usually just not held horizontal in these clips, but not "on the ice"

  • Dang it #91 Red!! Play the puck dammit!! At 3:58 he definitely commits a Roughing and another possible hit to the head penalty. Very nice hustle, but he needs to learn to get his hands down. Why wasn't he called for any of these infractions which are already covered in the rulebook? Was your great grandson on the other team Hef?

This video makes about as much sense as the proposed rule change. I'm more confused than ever.

    SOS SOS SOS

  • At 3:48 #91 Red makes another headshot and should've been put in the box- again. I guess the tycoon didn't have much time to review additional family oriented videos. This hit was illegal and is already covered in the rulebook. It was the second offense in the same game and could have easily been called with intent for a five or a ten. Someone get that kid under control; he has great vision and potential.

  • At 3:39 #91 Red proves me wrong and shows the hockey community world wide how to back check your donkey off and make a textbook perfect hit. There's a lot of hot hockey moms that he could busy himself with instead of destroying the game.

  • At 3:19 Hef proves that although age is just a number, every scout in the building will be writing down that defenseman's number. What a great clean check with no possibility of injury. Maybe that winger will get a little wider next time.

At 3:30 we see another check already covered in the rulebook; Elbow. Presbyopia?

  • At 3:01 I think the bachelor forgets to tell us that girls aren't all naughty and can make perfectly clean hits as well.

At 3:10 Scott Baio's part-time landlord doesn't seem to grasp that #23 White makes one of the most phenomenal and cleanest checks I've ever seen. This should've been put in Part 1 under "how to hustle and make a clean check with no possibility of injuring the other player" section.

  • At 2:40 #4 White shows us that #91 Red would be better off painting his entire body safety orange and perhaps putting a reflective band around his mid section. Hef might even let him work at the mansion. Certainly #91 Red could have easily been called for a headshot which is already in the rulebook.

At 2:51 we see that girls can do more than just pose. It seems that #10 Red is practiced at the art of boarding; already in the rulebook.

  • At 2:19 the jet-setter turned hockey commentator informs us that #29 Red does a great job "pinching-off" #8 White while leaning on him. If a hit to the head was analogous to dung excretion then I would be in complete agreement.

Those are the "legal body contacts". Now for the "illegal body contact, no attempt to play the puck" part of the show. Doesn't that say it all already?

  • At 2:00 in, the iconoclastic pornographer shows us a great example of a defenseman (#5 Blue) playing a one on one with #25 White. He says he (#5 Blue) turns with the opponent (#25 White) and closes the ice. I see #5 Blue hit #25 White as hard as he can but it has very little effect because #25 White is a big boy. If the roles would've been reversed I guarantee you that #5 Blue would've been destined for the dashers.

  • At 21sec into the video Hugh tells us that #89 for Edmonton does a great job having incidental contact with #93 for Detroit. It appears to me that #89 Edmonton actually purposefully trips #93 Detroit while impersonating a proctologist.

At 50sec we're enlightened on Pavel Datsyuk's finer points of maximus interference. I wouldn't be surprised if Hugh has Datsyuk's named tacked to the back of his silk threads.

  • Is this guy wearing a silk smoking jacket whilst he applies the rouge just right on his prized porker he wants you to marry? For a second I thought this was Hugh Hefner commenting on how to plug all apertures at Fukushima. If this is who I think it is, he really does look like the magazine founder too.

Are these seriously the examples that USA Hockey is going to put forth to make their case to eliminate checking from PeeWees???

  • canada is really gonna kick our ass in hockey now

  • Can't wait to see our refs try and differentiate between "legal" and "non-legal" body contact. I'm sure the inevitable varied interpretations will lead to some heated debate during games with coaches.

  • The examples of BAD contact is mainly the same player in Red #91. Have the refs call a penalty and discuss with the player's coach. There should have been at least 2 and in all fairness 3 penalties called on this kid.

  • I totally agree with this new rule. The focus should be on winning the puck and using appropriate body contact to do that. Last season we had a Bantam take an illegal hit from behind, causing severe injury, including a broken jaw, bleeding from his ear and possible brain damage. Bottom line is that kid that hit him should never play hockey again in my opinion. I also agree that the responsibility is on coaches to teach kids properly and on officials to implement the rules effectively.

  • The examples show virtually no contact and actual checking, what about the middle ground. The differentiation point seems to be the checking player's attention to the puck. Can a player check an opponent and take the puck?

  • Just another step towards the "pussification" of America.

  • @theS0CK1 I am so happy that i played hockey when it was a sport...now its turning into a glorified mens league!!! what a joke...its sad that the sport that i have grown up and been my life that i love...has turned into a sad boring sissy game. This is a joke and really really disgusts me.

  • I'm not sure what all the hub-bub is about. All this video is showing are examples of what is currently the no checking policy used in Mites & Squirts that is now being proposed to be applied at the Pee Wee level.

However, I'd like to continue by saying that I don't agree with the proposal because of the reasons USA is stating ... to reduce injuries and focus more on playing the puck than the body ... as an official I see more of the problem lying with poor coaching. Teach kids hit properly.

  • they are dropping usa hockey? thats great, where is that happening? and is there anyone taking usa hockeys place?

  • USA Hockey is basically an insurance company, so there goal is to reduce the amount of claims they have because the membership has grown dramatically in recent years, therefore meeting financial objectives in there effort to grow. As a Level 3 coach, I'm for keeping the sport safe, & that starts with educating the players, coaches, and referee's when issues arise, and we have all seen programs that have poor education and coaching. Very poor changes without input from coaches or referee orgs.

  • Sure hockey is rough but are we teaching our kids skill or just to knock someone down and half the time not even gain the puck. USA Hockey is attempting t
