  • there is a very simple answer to this, although i completely disagree with the drinking age, the reason it is what it is, is because the majority of accidents with cars or violence happen with people between the ages of 18-25. This simple rule that people under 21 cannot drink helps prevent a SHITLOAD of extra car accidents, because everyone knows that a dumb teenager can get drunk and drive like a maniac.

  • @bulletz4life

"everyone knows" derr derr, ah yes you know everything

the accidents were lowered when they made harsher punishments for drunk driving and that's fine. But saying the drinking age is reasonable is justifying an unfair law. Also, when an adults whos 18-20 drinks, instead of calling family of friends for help they know its illegal and try to get home stealthily, that leads to more drunk driving.

  • @spilledinsanity no drunk driving shouldnt be a huge ass fine it ould be like getting a speeding ticket 1 night in jail unless you hit someone

  • How does a politician determine the maturity level of those he doesn't know? Someone who is 16 may be more mature and responsible than someone who is 22. The drinking age hasn't worked. It's done nothing but increase binge drinking.18 yr olds are exposed to alcohol in college all the time and the gov expects the drinking age to stop these people from drinking? All it does is fucks up peoples lives with charges and huge fines. the gov doesn't give a shit about me, why should they care if I drink?

  • Im in the united states navy serving as an aircrewman. Myself and my piers have to act with above adverage amount of maturity and discipline in order to perform our jobs. The only thing civilians are exposed to is what they see on the news. We are put in extremely dangerous situations during our jobs putting ourselves and our fellow crew in harms way on a daily basis. I think we have enough maturity and discipline to have a beer at the bar.

  • its not realy sick i think thats wrong word

  • definitlyyy stay 21 thered be so many car accidents if not

  • you can go to war and die and you can vote for your country but u cant take a sip of beer

  • A lot of people in the military are still immature. I've spoken to US Marines before and a lot of them act really rudely and offensively. Here's the thing. At age 18, you're still irresponsible. Which is why they don't allow you to drink. The laws are absolutely fine.

  • There you go you said it! If they are still immature DONT LET THEM IN THE MILITARY! they too irresponsible to drink but they are responsible enough to die! Holy Shit! read what you say!!

  • Drinking isn't a bad thing if you don't abuse it. A lot of people like beer, I think people who fought in the war deserve a little more freedom.

  • i don't think the age should be lowered, most 18 year olds don't think things through, yeah if there in the military they should be able to just show there military id but if there if there just some 18 year old punk who wants to drink and has no relationship with the military then hell no. i'm sorry thats the way i see it.

  • i agree, as long as you show proof your in the military, you should be allowed to buy alchohol, the government trusts them enough with the resposibility to protect there fellow soldiers and civilians, they trust that they will be able to mentally stand up to seeing dead children etc to be able to take the life of somebody if need be. but they dont think there responsible enough to handle alcohol? stupid. but an18 year old off the street has not had military discipline instilled in them.

  • it should

  • In Denmark, Europe, the legal age for BUYING alcohol and liquor, is 16. The legal age for drinking it is 0. The age for driving a car is 18.

I think it's a good idea familiarizing people with alcohol a good time before letting them drive, kinda to familiarize them with the effects if being under the influence of the wonderful thing that is alcohol.

  • They did allow this when the Vietnam conflict was going on, but then they changed it back to 21 after all that was over...

  • i think it shoudl stay 21...because of the reasons they cited when they raised it.

but i think a exemption should be done for service men...lol...

i think if u got the balls to kill for ur country..u got the balls to drink a bottle of vodka.

  • While these days it's easy to own a vehicle at age 17, HELL NO...The age limit shouldn't be lowered. Especially in Houston, where we got alot of bad driving Mexicans...Fuck no! Keep it 21.

  • Good, keep it at 21 in your hick-ass Texas. Fuck, keep it at 21 for all the backward-ass, creationist, racist, puritannical redneck states south of the Mason-Dixon line! However, in the civilized North, the age should he lowered to 18. When I was a student, I lived in a big city with public transport, not some bullshit suburban sprawl. If I had a drink, I could take the subway home, or (gasp!) walk! Why can Euros buy beer at 16, but in America the 1920s "demon-rum" mentality remains?

  • Damn, you're pretty stupid. You sure you're not a hick, dick-head?

  • Way to generalize the south as nothing but redneck racist hicks. shows how good of a student you were in college.

  • Having more public transportation has nothing to do with the drinking age. there are taxis, etc in the south. No matter what if the age was lowered more people would decide to drive drunk in the north and south you yankee piece of shit. Laws are made with the masses in mind, not a pompous big city bitch. Funny that you mention racism when the majority of your post is derogatory to people below the mason dixon. If being an asshole is your idea of civilization you need to go back to college.

  • god dam shut up you num nut fuck tard.

  • Its 18 in europe

  • yo dumb ass down here in the backward-ass creationist racist puritanical redneck states south of the mason-dixion line, we do have citys, and taxis and guess what... where not all racist, or rednecks, and were not backward, ok come down here and say that one thing we do do right down here is back each other up.

  • The yshould take it away like in some countries in Europe.

  • I agree!

  • I'm 20. I'm an Airman. I've been to Iraq.

I can't have a beer. If I did and got caught, I'm fucked. That is bullshit. Everyone fucking knows it. I have EARNED my fuckin' right to drink.

  • i dont want to sound like a school nerd because im not i have Es, but your brain isnt fully devoleped until you are in your very early 20s, and alcohol can damage the process, but who really cares! have a beer!

  • 18 years of age most of us go off to university college or work. and i believe we are old enough to make our own decisions and plus we are legal to buy pron and buy lotto tickets we should be able to drink aswell. liek wtf? w.e everyone turns 19 sooner or later so i guess we just have to wait. or if you live in the states 21

  • i agree and its bullshit cause u get to smoke wen ur 17 and thats AS deadly as drinking

  • u smoke when yur 18

  • its 17 in california

  • A social security number basically is a stamp saying you are or were at one time a breathing human being. It is no sign for maturity or even responsibility.

If you are so adamant on that then raise the age for legal adulthood to be 23. Maybe then it will make sense to have a drinking age as ridiculously high as that. Until that day however drinking goes hand-in-hand with every other aspect of being an adult.

  • My premise is; Though 18 is adult enough for people to take on legal and financial responsibilities(which is good for them as developing human beings),they're typically not wise enough to drink responsibly. And it's not wise to usher the young into legal and financial adulthood by putting a can of Malt Liquor into their hands. But if thinning out the population and raising insurance premiums is your aim, then lower the drinking age by all means.

  • What my greatest desire along with keeping the age of adulthood and the drinking age level is some kind of culture change. I want more than a flat drinking age change on a certain day for no reason. I want classes that not only teach safety but appreciation and understanding, perhaps drinking licenses and permits to buy/consume, etc. How is it that I can be served wine at 14 in a restaurant in quebec without it turning heads? They treat it differently there, it's not on some pedastol.

  • Actually I think a social security number is a lifetime legally binding agreement that says you'll pay income tax on everything you earn. That's why they issue a number through your parents consent at birth or a very young age. A birth certificate is for saying that you are or were at one time a breathing human being

  • Since none of us have any say-so whether or not we get a SS# when we are born I basically hold it on the same level as a birth certificate. If you want to ever have a job or be included in any part of the "system" you will need a SS#. We don't have much of a choice except to have one, which is the same as a BC.

  • Listen, I'm all for people having as much freedom as possible, and if that means it's right to lower the drinking age, then O.K. But just know that the price for that in the long run may not be a very nice thing. And I've never heard any adult say " I'm so glad I was able to buy and drink alcohol two years sooner then the laws permit now".

  • The day we have to sign up for the draft registry, the day we can be called for jury duty, the day we elect our representatives, the day we get married, have a child, sign legally binding documents, and have overall responsibility of our actions is the day we are allowed to drink alcohol.

  • So does that mean when you accept a social security number at the age of "1" you can drink? Wow. In my opinion, you should be over college age to be able to drink. That is after graduation. Then at least they'll have earned a drink and will have absorbed the information acquired in school more thoroughly.

  • Nobody 21 and above would care to agree with a 18 yr old drinking age.

  • That's all we need over here is a bunch of 18 year olds driving drunk and out of control in the bars, 21 yr old idiots in this country can't even keep themselves in line... The military age should be risen to 21 also, kids straight out of High School don't have the brain capacity to make a decision to get themselves killed @ 18. Its all stupid. A 21 yr old would most likely never join the military after being on there own in the real world.

  • The college students in America are held hostage by a prohibitionist policy that's in tune with the failed experiment of the 1920s, not the 21st century. This exceptionalism is imposed on people that can otherwise vote, adopt children and serve in the military.

The US currently has the same drinking age as other alcohol-paranoid regimes, including Oman and the United Arab Emirates. Down with MADD and their backward, puritannical agenda!

  • jajaja the thing is that americans are very stupid when is about drinking... they are not mature enough....they want to get shitfaced always.... its too late for doing that....it will become dangerous for the US

  • Drinking age should be at least 21 if not older, unless they're in the military(for reasons you've stated). That's how it should be.Because most 18 year olds(that I've seen) are too reckless, and endanger other peoples lives with their reckless driving proclivities. But Once signed up for the military, they should be able to enjoy a pint of frosty cold Guinness.

  • Thats nothing but a cheap incentive to join the military. What about being forced to sign up for the national draft? That's practically the same thing as signing up for the military and we all have to do it.

  • If a person is enticed and persuaded to join the military by alcohol, then the least of that person's problems is the drinking age being too high. I frequently travel on the highways to get to gigs several times a week and every time I go,there are 16-23 year olds driving like complete fools; going 90 mph ,cutting people of, flipping their cars etc. And most of them(not all but most) are too young(mentally) and dumb to be drinking. So if they're not in the military, 21 is the number.

  • Obviously it's not the sole reason for joining but by definition it's still incentive.

More importantly however, I'm not sure which highways you use but frequently commute interstates not only an hour one-way to classes but anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours [even up to 5 hours] for my job (this can be up to 5 days a week) and bad driving knows no age. The next person to drive like a fool is equally as likely to be 40 as they are 16.

  • I myself am Czech, and I've started drinking regularly (5+beers every week, 10+ now)since I was 14. I've just turned 17 and I drink when going out and sometimes after a tough day with my friends (never alone). Even though I drink loads I've never had any health-related problems and I don't have a beer-belly either.

  • wait till you get 25-30 then that beer belly will show

  • the age limit is just forcing kids to be a little sneakier and keeping them out of bars its not stoping anyone from drinking

your making too big a deal over this. do you guys understand how many highschool students in areica drink?

i honestly believe its about 50%

  • way more than that I'd say in my school 75%

  • I live in England and have also been going in pubs since 16, even though the legal age is 18. I believe if your old enough to work anywhere, nevermind the armed forces you should be able to spend your money however you like. If this means winding down after work with a beer or just getting plain shit-faced, the choice should be your own and not some nanny state.

  • why do the fuck americans made such a fucking deal out of alchol. That is fucking stupid, if you are not men enough to get a beer then you should not go to war. Fucking puritans i hate them all!!!!

  • AMEN MAN!

  • korneld your a fucking genius dude i think that if you can splatter someone you don't knows brains all over the wall with a automatic 5.56 you should be able to handle a fucking beer or 2. anyway, well said!!

  • It should be 18 What are they scared of? If your going to be an alchoholic your going to be an alcoholic it doesnt matter if your 18 21 or 50 but mos tpeople drink responsibly so it doesnt make any sense

  • i say this not from doing it but just wat i know there is 35% alcohal in cough meds if u have to much u CAN get drunk and theres prob more of which is in many other things i mean cough meds are used very early in child hood and it increases as u grow right??? so why not have a beer at the age of 16 or 18. i mean under age ppl are still gonna drink so y not just let them?????!!!!!! thank u

  • I agree! Fags are allowed to marry but you can't drink. I know someone that went to Iraq at 18 fell in love with a girl who was also inlisted and at 20 he got injured and came home and married that girl. And he isn't even allowed to celebrate with a glass of Champagne at his wedding. Thats just silly. I mean if they are just going to keep raising the drinking age why not go balls out and reinstate prohibition. I mean that worked sooo well right....

  • very well said

  • there's no age limit to sniff glue.

  • lol; agreed

  • wtf

  • Yes i agree.. and thank you for posting this.

lol, u are now my newest hero!

  • Well said Ogi I live in Australia where 18 years of age we are introduced to Drinking, Driving (On own for most states), Gambling ect. I am 19 and I find it strange how in the U.S teens can get there drivers licence at 16 and cannot drink legally untill they are 21. What you have just claimed is a perfectly valid point.

    Well done again :)

  • Well I'm going on 20 soon but I think it should be lowered a little. Not to 18 but possibly to 20. Most countries actually have a drinking age of 18 or less. It in fact used to be 18 I think in the early 80's but then it became widespread to change it to 21 for drinking and driving reasons and possibly as well as crimes and such.

  • Fuck being 20 years old and not being able to drink. I have 1 year before i am 18 and can drink alcohol :D

  • yea...its ridonkulus...I agree. But it doesn't matter really...have you seen one college campus that doesn't violate this rule---? kids go crazy because of that very stigma...the stigma gives it power...how funny and how ironic...so fun!!..Eventually things will get legalized as people get more educated. Its just a matter of time.

  • no...if it was lowered young kids wouldn't over-react in predictable defiance against an invisible repressive force and bank roll alcohol companies (we need them to do so to help the economy). It also gives, along with drugs and illegal prostitution, a sneaky feeling of 'getting away with something'...which incites more of a demand than if the repression was not there in the first place. If you want people to love shit, tell them its a pot of gold.

  • I completly agree with you.

I live in England, so it's only 18... but I myself am joining the army next year (age 17)and damn well want to be able to enjoy a drink.

Its twisted that a government can let you die and suffer but not let you enjoy a beer.

  • I'd prefer my trained killers not be allowed to get drunk.

  • Ok, fair enough. How about putting a leash on them and tying them to a post. Then they won't be able to hurt anyone.

  • I think that could work. "BEWARE OF SOLDIER"

  • I think faranox is a pussy son of a bitch who needs to keep his fucking mouth shut or get out of this country. The soldiers are better men then you will ever be!!!

  • Please sir, there is no need to be rude. I didn't say our soldiers were of poor stature in any way.

  • I think you should stop talking shit over the internet. Because thats mostly for bitches.
