  • This was freakin' hilarious!

In one particular band I used to play in we used to joke about what James Brown used to tell his band - "Make a mistake and you're docked a weeks pay... 2 mistakes and you're out of the band".

What can I say... us drummers ARE animals!

  • He should've used their heads for drums for their solos

  • Playin' clams! :)

  • FUCK YEAH! PUT THEM HORN PLAYERS BACK IN THEIR PLACE!

  • Buddy rich needed to smoke some weed

  • Travis Barker? why are we arguing about this? let's just laugh at all the ridiculous insults Buddy Rich seems to come up with on the spot.

  • So much travis hate. Travis is a sick drummer, he got me into it. However, buddy rich is just next level shit, nobodys touching him

  • I didn't realize how much like BUDDY I really am!!! This is the coolest!!! Demanding perfection from his musician's!!! This is the best!!! Every musician on this planet should hear this and always remember that they (we) are not worthy of being comfortable at our craft... We must play stellar all the time, every time or get stepping!!!

  • I love these so much what a bastard!. "whaddya play? CLAMS"?! LMAO

  • I even reckon that If buddy rich were alive today, he would have considered Neil peart rubbish, He's such a critical motherfucker. But really, It's hard to find nice people and talent

Oh wait, James hetfield and Dave Grohl. Nice people, Talented people

but then when you raise the bar a little

Buddy rich, Mike portnoy, Real assholes.

  • "Seinfeld" in the tags

i see what you did there (that was what brought me here, tough i'm a BR fan)

  • This is a "needy" video. =p

  • Shut the fuck up old man..!!!

  • This vid is popular on Male

  • Phase, that was brilliant.

  • To paraphrase a certain Dr. H. Lechter Travis Barker can't even play the drums as I understand the definition of it ! lol

  • say you like about buddy rich, but i gotta applaud his stance on beards

  • He was nothing but a shit talker anyway. He did nothing after Dusty slapped the living shit out of him lol

  • He keeps threatening that he's gonna fire or leave the band if they screw up 1 more time yet he's ripping the same cats in each tape.. lmao! He was just menstrual that's all

  • Played this with the snowflake option.....weird.

  • It's hard to believe he was gay.

  • I am pretty sure Buddy Rich would yell at Barker for breathing wrong. God knows how hard he'd laugh at Barker's crap playing :-) or he'd kill him. Barker is baaaaaad.

  • Who's the australian guy who gets fired here.. and had he been the one making prior tape - seems like - and what part of what highway and on what date does this guy get set aside?

BR tells driver - anywhere you want.Cold. But bands like W Pickett's got parked, here in Scotia c. 1970

  • The guy who got chewed out at the end, he's a trombone player named Dave Panichi who played in Buddy's band. Buddy was upset because Panichi had a beard and Buddy wanted him to shave it because he didn't want his band to "look like that". According to sources, these tapes were recorded by the band's piano player at the time, Lee Musiker sometime in the early 1980s.

  • +++ BUDDY DID PLAY LIKE THE DEVIL,,, BUT HE WAS ABSOLUTELY Phenomenal !!!,,:)

  • Sounds like a Napoleon complex... maybe not becuase he was physically short, but because normally the drummer commands the least respect on the bandstand because he's not even playing the changes, melodies, harmony, etc. They're even the most tied down physically, as they have to sit in one place while the horn players get to move around. He probably felt like he had to talk to them like that so no one took any control away from him on the bandstand.

  • @MrPenandsword You incredible big fucking cunt... He's nothing but a very arrogant man because he was considered the best jazz drummer (or maybe just the best drummer) Why would he feel "infeiror" for being a drummer when most of the songs he played had at some point some very complex drum solo/break What a stupid opinion you have about music...

  • no matter what the band sounded like ,this is no way to talk to anyone ...buddy was a pretty arrogant guy..the band should have just left his ass ..don't matter who you are.you don't talk to anyone in this way..some of the comments giving him slack about this because he was the 'greatest drummer in the world'? I don't think so..greatest drummer? better than philly joe, popa jo jones, art blakey, max roach?

  • @wessgreen10 wrong

  • This is some pretty funny stuff. "A right hand to your brain".

  • He makes Lawrence Welk look sane.

  • legend!!

  • Yeah he was a great drummer. But he is a dick. And people shouldn't be respecting him for this. Like I see in some comments.

  • i just dont get the fascination with travis barker. He's not a master musician. BR WAS a master musician and this is an old school beatdown, and as far as I'm concerned, this doesnt happen enough. The punks & kids today just dont get it and dont care about the craft.

  • @iTip28 Travis Barker? You can't enen put them in the same sentence. Stephen Perkins is a better drummer than Barker and you can't even put Perkins in the same sentence. Buddy is in a class of his own.

  • Jeez I guess they must have REALLY sucked!

  • don't ever fuck around with the greatest drummer in the whole wide world. haha.

  • Like a Boss

  • the greatest drummer travis barker wold never show this kind of dis res pect this dude is a major leguue asshole

  • @4against1 I am so sorry you think Travis Barker can even peel back Buddy Rich's foreskin.

  • @IndyBear92 yeah but buddy rich is not so rich off his drumming now is he

  • @x2thezful When you're a legend, money isn't part of the equation. So sorry you think it's about money and Playboy models.

  • @IndyBear92 no when your a legend you get paid: that goes for ever thing be the best at anything and you will get paid equation my ass ask usain bolt how much he gets paid

  • @x2thezful I'm sure Rich is paid. It's just a shame you seem to have no idea of who he is. Why are we having this conversation again?

  • @IndyBear92 i know who he is and what he missed out due to so called greatness good day

  • @IndyBear92 Look him up on wikipedia. He was involved in the production of West Side Story. He's paid. Period.

  • @4against1 ANY high-school drummer could play at TB's level - he's a mediocre talent as is 99.9999 % of todays performers - I say performers because to call them artists or musicians would not be accurate

  • @4against1 No matter where he is, Travis Barker isn't even the greatest drummer on the block.

  • I'm Buddy Rich Bitch!

  • a friend of mine told me a story about buddy. i dont disrespect the man what so ever but here is the story. my good friend worked for a man that played a bass in mr. rich's band. after a few of these rants he quit. mr. rich asked him to come back for a show; 2 way ticket, hotel, expenses, etc. he went back to have mr. rich show up in his room only to say, "fuck you and the plane i let you ride in here on."

  • WOW! Buddy's pussy got really hurt here. What a fag. That's what happens when mothers don't give enough love. I guess that's how people act when they think the whole world revolves around them. HAHA what a fuckin' pussy

  • @c:These tapes were made -long- after the big band era was -over-. The only big band jazz musicians making a decent living were in the "Tonight Show" band & in the Buddy Rich band. The Tonight Show band kept the same guys forever, so the only opportunity for younger guys to play this kind of music, & get paid for it, was with Rich. In other words, -this- world -did- revolve around him !

  • @lazur1 nice try

  • @c:Who's even a far 2nd? In the late 60s, Rich did major venues w/acts like The Who, while Count Basie did school auditoriums, & Woody Herman did small 1/2-filled clubs. Young jazz players had 4 choices: 1/be poor, 2/get a day job, 3/play rock, or 4/work for Rich. Buddy knew it, & acted accordingly. A-hole? YES, but an entitled, 1-Of-A-kind A-hole. (Nice try? Wish I could say the same:-)

  • @lazur1 "School auditoriums" - interesting how you don't mention or maybe don't know, which auditoriums and how much they paid. Playing a school auditorium doesn't imply a shitty gig or shitty pay: . When Count came back to Kansas City around that time period, the man had an entourage following him around - you couldn't get through to him to say one word. Even commercial "stars" like Marsalis played enough auditoriums in their day.

  • @h:I saw Basie band in early 70s, not in an auditorium, but an all-purpose room@Uof I/Circle Campus. Folding chairs. I didn't see contracts, but I saw 150+/- in the audience. The room wouldn't hold many more. I saw Woody@Chicago's (tiny)Alice's Revisited, c'72. I saw Rich 3-4 times 68-73. Best remembered, "the Buddy Show" w/The Buddy Miles Express during BM's prime, & w/The Who when "Tommy" was first released. It was obvious Rich had the only big band reaching a large new audience.

  • @lazur1 Have you ever worked as a musician? You are aware that it is impossible to have large gigs continuously, right? That would be awesome- I would be a millionaire by now. You've seen Basie, once in the 70s - how do you know he was doing it out of desperation? And anyway, nobody gives a shit about the Who. Worldwide, Basie has a much bigger name and most importantly, the music was a lot better.

  • @h:Back on topic: "Cellardoor" posted that Buddy's deluded to think "the world revolves around (him)". I contend that Rich was the only means by which these young unknown jazz players could go from nowhere to touring the world while collecting a decent regular paycheck. Thus, -their- world actually -did- revolve around him. That's all. It was -almost- impossible, but -not- impossible to have large gigs continuously, Rich was doing it at the time.

  • @lazur1 It's unclear what the hell your topic is because you're just using a colloquialism to argue something - WHAT? Musically speaking, the world didn't revolve around him. Maybe he revolved around the money.Just b/c one gets huge gigs all the time doesn't mean young talent will immediately want to join that band. The music is ultimately what matters for most people that can play worth shit. Working musicians need money but few will play in a band only because the paycheck's good.

  • @h:I used the term in response to the same term. Get real.there will always be plenty of good young talent looking for the highest paying job, and in spite of your low opinion of Rich, he was good, and so were his bands.

  • @lazur1 and one more thing - how do you know how much money these guys got to keep compared to Basie's band who by all accounts treated his members really well? You say "decent" pay and then you say "large gigs" - not the same thing. There are a number of people who played with Basie around that time who later got decent names in jazz - Frank Wess is one example (played with milt jackson, hank jones). I call bullshit - Rich's band was not the ONLY way.

  • I hope this is how it sounds when Rob Trujillo yells at his "bandmates" in Metallica...

  • I can't believe Buddy Rich kicked him out on the side of the road in the middle of the dessert.

  • These were not men, these were pussies on that bus. I don't give a fuck who buddy rich was I'd put that motherfucker in the hospital making sure to break every bone in his hands if he came off like that to me.

  • @evilfreethinker

    ....says the piccolo player.

  • @evilfreethinker I hope u have better than a black-belt like Buddy did or your lites probably be out before you hit the floor ! ! lol And btw to get on that bus you'd have to have an astronomical level of musical talent so I don't think you'd ever be on that bus.

  • LOL! look @ the comments. People are praising Buddy Rich for yelling at the guy, then they get mad when people are yelling at them. HAHA! Fucking pussies.

  • I've never listened to buddy rich, I don't care about who he was as a person. I really just listen to this as a fan of language, those are some of the most inspired phrasings I've ever heard.

  • Sounds like the T.I. when I was getting off the bus for basic training in the Air Force. GET THE FUCK OFF MY BUS!!!

  • Buddy was a master who played almost every night for more than 60 years with the best musicians that ever lived. He gave this punk a chance to "make it" with the best big band in the world. Buddy helped many people and gave musicians chances where other people wouldn't. He expected them to do a professional job. But, unfortunatly he got some young punks who couldn't do the job. They just complained and whined. I'm glad Buddy talked like that to him. He deserved it.

  • wow, he's lucky the guy with the beard didnt break both his fucking precious hands and make him learn to play with his feet

  • @mfrank165 He did play with his feet. He was about as fast with his feet as with his hands. That's why they sit still for it. He's Buddy Rich, and for every one of them there's 10 guys who'd play for free just to say they played with Buddy Rich.

  • [Remember to shower immediately after being in the vicinity of Bill Clinton. As Wall Street & the Fed steal trillions of dollars the public is berated for bathing daily.]

  • Slavery remains a conundrum. Throughout the world slave-laborers are prisoners of the State. Christ' Hitchens defends children? What of the 500,000 Iraqi children slaughtered in a hopeless war for oil that he continues to support? What honor is there in slaughtering farmers?

  • What? Husbands should beat up foreigners instead? Violence: let's keep it domestic! New York is one of two places: New York City & upstate New York.

  • I would love to put him in a room with Christian Bale LMAO ;-)

  • In spite of what everyone thinks, Buddy's bark was much worse than his bite. He had an attitude, and a big temper, but he rarely fired anyone, and was very helpful. I hear those he played with were made professionals by Buddy Rich because he didn't give any slack.

  • Buddy gave 100%. He expected the same from his band. He was a perfectionist. No excuse to be a dick, but it is what it is.

  • Ha, I love how my band director told our jazz band to listen to this because it was hilarious. xD

  • And I thought my high school music teacher was bad...

  • FUCKIN AWESOME!!!!

  • two words : drum machine!

  • when his band and a famous pop band that I was playing with met in the 80's in a Manchester hotel, a lot of the players were trying to score drugs from us. Must have been the pressure...

  • @srprose which pop band? PM me if necessary, thanks...

  • yup great drummer ,, but otta control EGO maniac !

  • Ruddy Bitch

  • Wow, the drummer getting mad at the REST of the band for sucking...

  • @GoBoomYay well to be fair, in the world of jazz musicians, everyone expects everyone else to be ridiculously good and surgical in their execution.

  • @GoBoomYay what? you're an idiot..

  • Whaddaya play, clams?!

  • Fuck this prick, I hope someone gave him a smack.

  • HAHAHA boss

  • He's right It's his name up front, and he is writing the pay checks.

  • Ive heard this a million times and I roar with laughter every time. If I were on his bus, he would have thrown me off for uncontrollable laughter.

  • i'd have punched him in the nose

  • He is from one of the greatest group ever. I'd be pissed if their performance weren't perfect either.. He really wants to give his fans some good music.

  • Can't do this anymore...

So ya get what you got..

    A country of lazy idiots...

  • Comment removed

  • Buddy was a douche, period.

  • Comment removed

  • @apbainmaine buddy had high expectations for his band and his players and if they didn't play to the standers he set he would put them in there place plus he's the boss how dare u say he is a douche his band played badly for that performance and he wasn't going to accept that kind of performance PERIOD. and if you were in his band you should. i'd like to try to see you be successful in life with that kind of attitude you wont get any respect from anybody

  • @gregbalut What does him being "the boss" have to do with whether or not he's a douche? Of COURSE he's a douche! That's the whole point. You don't need to try so hard to justify him, you know?

  • What a pussified generation we have these days. Like you never had to work for a tough boss? I guess not, these days, with all those nanny social worker types and lawyers to run to. Good for Buddy. He demanded most from himself and had a right and an oblication to demand it of his band. Every lick of music he played showed that. So your boss is tough? Then suck it up, step your game up a notch or ten or move onto something else.

    CLAMS!!!

  • @nonthere I know bosses who act the exact opposite way and are more effective in their results. Having a fun and enriched environment is more effective than being forced all the time. Buddy had shit social skills coupled with fucked up problems. Bosses are tough but not as much as they used to be. Which is good. It's called evolving. And no I'm not a pussy, I'm a veteran who used to train with Marines. I'm pretty tough but I'm also smart and effective. I think you need to evolve.

  • @cellardoor199991 fuck the marines, youre still a pussy.

  • @nonthere Also, your calling this generation a bunch of pussies. You're the one crying about stupid shit. Much like little kids do. I think it's time for you to grow up

  • Wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of this prick! great drummer though

  • wouldnt let this make you think any different of him, watching interviews he does genuinely seem like a nice person; clearly he was a perfectionist. and as he said he was never happy with anything he did, always thought he could do better. he must have been under a lot of pressure to do well seeing as everyone knew him as the worlds greatest drummer.

also i think he asked to hear these recordings on his deathbed

  • "I'll fire you on the fucking bandstand",and I'll knock your teeth down your throat on the band stand, fucking prick

  • @cast390 which tape is that on, 1 2 or 3?

    \

  • Buddy souds like a mafioso. If it wasn't about money, he would have a band left. They would all have left. They must have been getting some serious paychecks to sit around and listen to all that garbage.

  • Wow...what a jerk.....

  • Well... if you can't take criticism?... Get off the bus!

  • Could someone point out all the Seinfeld quotes? I know what they are, but it's hard to pick them out.

  • @ItsTurningGreen002 look in the description

  • @MSWproductions55 as in where they are in the tapes. Like what time. I know what the lines are, I did read the description.

  • What has 3 legs and a dick on it?

    Drum throne.

  • obama should take buddy rich lessons, for better or worse

  • Joe Pesci on drums. Awesome.

  • @mmmegameat lol joe pesci

  • Buddy was the greatest drummer who ever lived but I never knew anyone who had a good word to say about him as a person, I would sooner have worked for Gene Krupa or Chick Webb anyday.

  • @thecubanism For me it's a tough call as to who was "the best". Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Neil Peart, could all overlap each other on any given day.

  • The reason bands kicked ass back then and most suck today. Period.

  • i think its great, its called balls at the end of the day.not very nice but niether is blowing up schools.

  • I would have been the first off the bus. I don't care who you are , to talk to someone like that shows no respect or class. You can be a tough leader without talking down on someone like that.

  • He was a black belt in karate. He would constantly kick people off of his bus. If they didnt he would kick their ass.

  • Buddy was a bandleader from the age of 11.....

I think he took it very very seriously and didn't want people fucking up

  • THE greatest drummer who ever lived (any drummer who's worth anything would tell you this) - a difficult man to work for... this tape captures a bad, angry side of him - but that doesn't make him a ' bad human being' like I saw on some posts here. In fact he was a kind-hearted up -beat human being. We all have our bad moments.. and plenty more bands then you think go through this, it's just not captured on tape.

  • TO BAD WE DO NOT HAVE A BUDDY RICH KIND OF PERSON RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT TODAY. HE WOULD STRAIGHTEN UP THE F---ING WORLD!!!!

  • Fucking shit musician, buddy is a fucking hillbilly of a drummer and a terrible human being. A drummer isnt more than the sum of his parts

  • @rhspercussionistguy People in glass houses should not throw stones my friend, If i was a band leader and they played a shit set id be pissed to people paid good money for it, besides buddy set the bar for drumming speed and technique something very few people have today when it comes to drums so if you wana hit that bar fair enough, other wise lou how underneath it player theres the door

  • @orly805 Doesn't matter HOW good he was (and he was exceptional); an asshole is an asshole, and bad treatment is bad treatment. I've met brilliant musicians who were like this, as well as ones who were good human beings. It's a choice that everyone can make, regardless of their level of achievement or success.

  • @hapbarb Wrong !

  • @rhspercussionistguy

    rhs=retard high-school?

Don't disrespect him just because this one video.

If anyone is a shit musician, it's probably his band.

    Drummers always work the hardest.

And it's annoying when horn players, or guitarists don't give drummers credit, then decide to be snobs.

Again, he's a fucking great musician, and it's a fact.

Don't call yourself a musician, especially after judging another just because of one video..

  • @omg1a1kitten I was a little heated in my original comment, and my post probably is opinionated as far as his skill in drumming, but a person cant talk to another person like buddy did. He's talking to them like he owns them, and his attitude on handling problems like that is apparently really crappy. Also who says the band didnt give him credit? Thats not what the video is about. I apologize for my language, but try to see where im coming from. Would you like to be talked to like buddy did?

  • Someone should have taken him outside and shown him what it`s like

  • Folks, I hope you give to listen to the CD called "INTRODUCING RAY WALLACE," which is on Eddie Angel's SPINOUT label. There is no profanity on it, but you still might get a kick out of it.

  • Im with Buddy, hes the boss, and he pays people to make music, thats a great job and the people he pays should be as professional as he wants

  • I know I really shouldn't, but this is making me lol.

  • Haha. Was the dude he was yelling at about the beard Australian? Poor guy, he was probably new to the band.

  • Well, to be fair..... maybe those motherfuckers WERE suckin' all over this joint. I dunno. Maybe he's got a point.

  • @alexmortland I have the feeling they really DID suck too.

  • I don't give a FUCK how good a drummer he was. What and ABSOLUTE dick. Music is supposed to bring people together, and it's sole purpose is to bring entertainment to people watching and playing. Jesus Christ, I'd never embarrass someone like he did. Fucking disgrace to music. YES i fucking said it. Fan-boys can fuck off. Yes he was an insanely good player. I'm not saying that he isn't, but Jesus Christ you could never pay me enough money to play with that Whiny little fuck.

  • @Turtlesrossum - you're only seeing the artistic side of music. Its also a BUSINESS that supports people and their families. THIS is what is ticking Buddy off so much. People are paying good money to see a professional act and they didn't get one. Buddy, at this point had spent over 50 years in the business and he deserved to have people that not only respected him, but themselves by NOT cheating the audience. Its shows a lack of respect for your audience. This is what sets Buddy off.

  • "I got to carry you and pay you at the same time?...Fuck you.."

I like. It sounds funny because he's still speaking in the 1950's fast, proper tone but is getting after their ass.

  • I would like some clams

  • According to the biography "traps the drum wonder" written by Mel Thorme, Buddy never heard these tapes but he knew of their existence. Just a couple of days before his death he insisted that they were transcribed and included into the biography to capture all his sides. Thorme did reluctantly and they can be read in the chapter "Buddy´s mouth" in the book.

  • A brilliant psychotic.

  • Reminds me of Lee Elia going off on Cubs fans back in 1983.

  • what a conceded loser, I don't give a shit how good a drummer he was !!

  • @Arcixil I think you meant "conceited."

  • This guy sounds like my dad.

  • My favorite line is when he goes, "You had a day off yesterday and you come back like this and you SUCK!" LOL

  • This is the funniest shit I have ever heard.. and there is something strange about listening to this dead guy go completely off his nut.

  • This is common of bandleaders, passive aggressive boss types - they pay money for perfection, they demand it & then some by their rule. They do not want to lose anything they've worked hard for. Itsover the top, but they don't forget it and they don't let you forget it either. Their name, their living, their rep. They're not going to be made to look bad. if you don't like it, that's where you get a manager and start your own gig. If you can't do that, you either do your part or get a diff gig.

  • Great drummer, awful human being.

  • Comment removed

  • although this is funny as hell, if you want to see how a classy leader operates search 'duke ellington model of leadership.

  • @IndependentGeorge76 Duke's band did not have anyhwere near the dicipline that Buddy's had. Check out my favorite vodeos, and look at the "Perdido" video. There you will see Paul Gonsalvez dead asleep in the first tenor chair. Duke was TOO easy on his guys.

What kind of "leader" would allow their people to sleep on stage? Would you? I wouldn't.

Buddy was hard on his guys, but he demanded they play their best at all times, and there is nothing wrong with kisking the ass, verbally, of slackers ~

  • @MarkR1957 Lousy typos . . . should be "videos", and "kicking".

  • @MarkR1957 well it's all subjective of course, but for me Buddy Rich's band never came remotely close to the artistic achievements of the Duke Ellington organisation. fine drummer, mind.

  • @IndependentGeorge76 Subjective, maybe, but I can tell you from personal experience - I've seen EVERY major Big Band in person, and I saw Buddy's band 30 times. When they were ON, which they mostly were, they were an unequalled force. The TOP.

No one who is at the top of their game, a go-getter, has any problem with the way Buddy dealt with slackers.

The only people who have issues with it are those who are slackers themselves, and will never understand what it takes to strive to be the Best ~

  • Buddy Rich was a c*nt. Picasso beat his wife. So it goes.
