Georgia, while I don't think Don Wayne is as good as either his dad or Ben, I don't think Hayseed Dixie's bad at all. But I do agree that Doodle suffers from CAIS: Cranio-Anal Impaction Syndrome.
Stick, I think you mean a number at or below 39. The Scene's first gig was November of 71. Not like Tom Gray's son and Mike's Dobro and steel student would know or anything ;-)
wow, saw these guys 40 years ago at the carlisle bluegrass festival, who new, saw bill monroe, lester flatt, sam bush, still to-day my fav. musician is david grisman, thanks to that carlisle weekend trip, can i recommend the thrill is gone , the bb hit, done by grismanand jerry garcia, enjoy
@dogsee1: I +1'd you on the "Rosenthal sucked" comment...not b/c I think Phil "sucks" per se, but b/c I agree he never fit as neatly into the Scene's sound as any other member has...but he *did* write "Muddy Waters" which should certainly count for something!!!
@ all the Douglas-lovers/Auldridge-haters: yes, Jerry is a phenomenal Dobro player, but for my dollar, Mike comes out on top. His break, along with the last 30 secs, in this performance should be good evidence of what I mean.
Eat your heart out Eric Clapton! :o) Long live Duffey. I totally agree Mike Aldridge is the best dobro ever...I love Jerry Douglas too, but I'm sure he would agree.
this is orgasmic, so is live at the cellar door..hodd damn what a set that was.....i agree with big john..these hillbillies, rednecks and geeks take away from bluegrass music..the profound ignorance of those sorry souls. ruin bluegrass' image..duffey felt the music was good enough to be played in homes of lawyers and doctors..not just hillbillie hootnannies..
i get the impression that there's no dobro player on earth that gets exactly what he wants to hear out of his instrument like Mike Auldridge. that guy playing the banjo is hot too, whoever he is.
like the old lady that licked the cats ass.....each to her own taste..i prefer the scene and ador hot rise..tony rice is not my type, but he is good..
The boys are lightin' this tune on fire. The Mike Auldridge solo is hot! Haveta agree w/ others' comments on his Jedi master Dobro skills. He has such command of the instrument. It's really inspiring!
i think he is with charlie trying to persuade him to stay in one place and quit traveling so much...and chuckie said..what in hell are you gonna call a group like that,"the seldom SEEN???????".....
Ben Eldridge has to be one of the the most under rated bonjo players ever.He was on a par with all the greats,as everyone in the Viginia area already knows.

Stick? Did you mean Carlisle, Ontario? I have fond memories of that one. A lot of fun. But i don't think the Scene played there til about 74 or 75.

Jerry Douglas and Rob Ickes are fantastic musicians as is Mike Auldridge...Belittling master players serves no purpose...

hayseed dixie, while being a fine band, would never step foot on a john duffy, mike aldridge, et al comparison. this band is on an island, my friend.

Nice try, but that sucked really bad. Hayseed Dixie would do that way better.

Ben Eldridge is the banjo player. The Seldom Scene came to be in his basement during a jam session.

damnit he is ben eldridge..the scene is by far the greatest bluegrass group of ALL TIME>>>>>>>

im gonna have to go with the Tony Rice Unit, then Hot Rize, THEN Seldom Scene. but dammit, thats just my opinion, seldom scene rocks hard.

I like Toni Rice too but how come when he does ''freeborn man '' his face looks like he smells something bad l.o.l.

Some Duffey's facial expressions are reminiscent of Jim Carrey's Andy Kaufmann in Man In The Moon!

I saw the Scene several times at The Birchmere club while stationed with the military in D.C.area back the late80's.
These vids are great, but there wasnothing like watching them burn this tune live!
Ben: You are the Licksmeister on the banjo.
I'll always be an eternal fan!
