Yes It´s 4/4, as Haake has stated before on some interviews. They just groove (incredibly) on different lenght parts that will eventually fill a cycle. Most of the times (at least to my ears), the full cycle of the riff uses 3 bars, 5, 6, 9,etc.and that´s another thing that makes you think that they use stuff like 7/8, 13/16 or whatever. It´s funny but if you watch the guys perform live (especially Jens) you can actually "see" the groove or "bounce" , awesome!

With Meshuggah, I've started thinking differently about metal riffs. I mean, I don't want to offend any bands out there, but every riff there've made just redefines "metal" and what true metal is. Meshuggah is just showing that this is what metal should be evolving to. Dissonant, haunting, syncopated, just crazy music. I'm glad that there are bands now that follow in this road now.
