  • My capacitor mushroom up like that, I just went out and got a new one for 22.53 and fixed the problem, but it’s getting harder to buy them from the distributing company since they told me that they will longer sell them to home owners. They only sell them to Licensed Contractors.

  • @rbu2m you can get them off line too remember , if you ever need parts , there is a house here that will ship to ya , no questions asked ...

  • @towrecker Thanks....that will be my next route to go on line if I ever need AC parts again. I worked as an AC Tech for 5 years even took my EPA test to buy Freon. Now I can’t even buy AC parts or tools unless I’m a licensed Contractor. I just hate to go and get a contractor licenses just to buy parts and work on my own sh!t.

  • if something like this happens, call a pro. at the same time you can ask to have a check of your system for 150 dollars. saving you money on the long run. I have a system which I suspect the capacitor has given up and I will not do the replacement myself. the cost is not monstrous anyways

  • @MsH1h1h1h1 they check them for you alright , the look at it thats about it , and most will carry their gauges and a tank of gas to the unit , hook it all up for show as you the home owner has no clue what they are doing , and all they did was nothing , they say "had to put a pound of gas in it " and that $100 check up just went to $200 , most companies rip you off this way , I am a pro in this field , and have set up these so called check ups at customers homes after I fixed a unit ...continued

  • @MsH1h1h1h1 and hidden and waited for them to come , watch them , and videoed them doing nothing , but saying they did , hard to place gas in a unit that is at correct charge , and hard to dispense from a tank they never opened the valve on , a capacitor , or a contactor are two items that a home owner can do with basic knowledge of electricity , and most the time you can tell they are bad by looking at them , why should they pay $200 to fix it when they can do it their self for $20 ????

  • @MsH1h1h1h1 I seem to think you are nothing more than one of the rip off hvac guys , hoping someone reads your comment , and calls you so you can make more money when they can easily fix it their self !! now proceed to shut up and leave , this video is for the people not afraid to get their hands dirty , and most likely built their own house , or the family that is very low on money and can't afford your $150 + parts crap , they might even have a hard time finding $20 to buy a cap and install it

  • @towrecker be polite dude. I am not in the domain. but I have a question to you. how long the power should be off for the capacitor to become completely empty? what if I shut it off for a week?

  • @MsH1h1h1h1 I would not touch one after 10 years with out grounding the terminals in all combinations , quick , easy , and neutralizes the threat of any harm , some are wired to bleed down in just seconds , some are not , some the compressor , and or fan will bleed them down on shut down , some don't , so ground it out , expect a pop and arc , it may or may not , just be prepared , and short it for safety sake

  • @towrecker can you wear gloves to better protect yourself? how do you dispose it?

  • @MsH1h1h1h1 just ground it out , and you will be safe , after grounding it is safe to touch , and just toss it in the trash , it is harmless after you ground it , unless you put power to it again , it will stay dead ...

  • Wow! This saved my day! I woke up this morning to a very hot house, went outside and could hear the condensor running but no fan. After some basic electrical trouble-shooting I was able to determine that the unit had 240vAC and the relay was switching when the thermostat was switched to "Cool".

A quick google search... and this was the 2nd hit! Can you believe it? After a quick run to the closest HVAC parts store, I had my air running in about 15minutes. Thank you Towrecker!!

  • @sparaducile17 like I said , it's the most common failure during the heat lol , and your welcome !!

  • @towrecker yep, you are so right! We just had 6 straight days of temps over 90 degrees and that was what killed my capacitor. I spent $40 on the part and was a super-hero to my kids ;)

  • Great information. Thank you.

  • You saved me some big money...much appreciated and God Bless!

  • @SkiiDizzle it's not always the issue with them , but very , very common , and your welcome !

  • yeah the capacitor or the relay switch that kicks the blower on are usually the two main fault points , that or the squirrell cage fan it's self some times too

  • @daddytech you are right , but the contactor is the least of giving trouble , but lightning will kill the 24 v coil in them in a second lol

  • I just replaced my capacitor on my ac a few weeks back. I've replaced thousands of capacitors (mostly in light fixtures). Some heat pump units will have individual capacitors for the fan and compressor. I've ran across a few with a "hard start capacitor".

  • @ryanb788 there are so many hardstarts put on that are not called for , the actual run cap is weak , but the tech never thinks about trying a new one , they just grab a hard start , and sling one it lol

  • @towrecker sure are. The 0nli reas0n u shuld use a hard start ca is if u g0t a c0mress0r that is 0ld sluggish as an alternative t0 re lacing it. <-------n0t s*elling err0rs the damn ke b0ard is F$*ed u.............damn it! l0l

  • I just learned about this today. However I think the Air conditioner still works like crap

  • @ghtowagon you now live in the depths of h3ll ....ooops I mean florida lmao !!

  • @ghtowagon you now live in the depths of h3ll ....ooops I mean florida lmao !

  • @towrecker Tell me about it... Now I got Car AC compressors to fix. :( Gotta stay artificially cool.. If power was ever lost here for a long period of time everyone will be melted.. I think its time to move back to the snow country...

  • good video... in the tags.. ya got "nickelback" what does a canadian band have to do with air cond..beside being cool,,, lol..

  • @y2kxj lol I guess I clicked that out of the suggested tags by accident lol I guess their a/c was broken that day lol

  • I got a small box of cap's.... if someone is tearin out a running unit for an upgrade or whatnot I always take the cap's and the contactors. You never know.

  • @More350Power fry a few lol , they are so much fun !! , you can also run 3 phase motors off a bank of caps on single phase lol

  • good video!. I've saved tonns of units from scrap by replacing the dreaded run cap!. but very few actually bulge out like that. most of the time I've replaced one simply because the comp was sitting there humming. worked every time.

of course, if the comps been sitting stalled for a while it could have damaged it, but I've only had one die a few months after doing the cap. and it was because of a partial burnout when the first cap failed.

  • @Aussie50 all but one this year have been bulged out like that ...but you are right , they don't always , either way one would think that these companies could make one work for longer than a few years lol
