great video the one thing i wanted to say is when you buy the trans fluid if you go to oreilys they will tell you which one and how much of the fluid you need
Scott, I enjoyed your video but I would like you show how to flush the whole transmission, I seen a video were someone pulled the inlet line from the radiator and started the car and kept adding fluid while it ran until bright red fluid started coming out. Is this feasable?
I've another problem on my automatic gear for Camry 1999
(its switching speed from 1-2 normal & smooth, 2-3 normal and smooth, But from 3-4 Very slow) and that happen when i reach the speed from 60km to 100km it don't switch the speed faster very slow and maybe it will not even change it cause I've to move my foot from the accelerator slightly to make the gear switching from speed 3-4 and when that happens i feel like big Push when it switching , does that mean it have to switch from time ?
@midosoft2008 it means the tranny is wearing out inside, that's how they act when they're wearing out inside. But try some lucas tranny additive, that often helps.
Scotty on my 99 hyundai elantra is getting ready to hit 30,000 miles, should i use the transmission machine at jiffy lube that sucks the fluid out while car is running or just drop the pan ? i just hope it wont slip like my cavalier did. please let me know
Scotty i had a 96 chevy cavalier, i changed the trans fluid at 108,000 miles i switched to full synthetic fluid, when i finished it started slipping, why did that happen? fluid was black when i drained it.
@gmcarfreak cause on really dirty trannies changing fluid puts in clean slippery fluid that can often make em slip. Try some lucas tranny additive and pRAY it goes away.

I planned on doing it a while back but reconsidered when i realized that trannys hold about 15 or something quarts of fluid. and that i needed to have a pro do it or i needed a vacuum pump otherwise you are only replacing 1/4 to a 1/3 of the fluid. can you explain this?
I have a 99 alero and decided to change out the tranny fluid after watching this...it wasnt all that bad to be honest. An alero has a sealed system so i loosened one side of the pan w/the car at an angle on jack stands and drained the fluid slowly avoiding a big mess. Changed out the filter and threw a new gasket on before re-installing the pan. After adding fluid the pan dripped a bit so i simply (and gently) torqued the bolts a little more.
To fill the crankcase, there is a filler drain plug on the side of the crankcase, open that when adding fluid on a closed system...be sure the car is on a level surface...once fluid comes out of the side close it. Start the car, shift thru the gears (not driving) then reopen the crankcase plug and put more fluid in from the top until fluid comes out the side. Then you have successfully changed the tranny fluid:-) Olds Alero 168,000 miles and running strong!

@aussiechileno your friction material was most likely damnaged by the lack of maintance and when you throw new fluid into it it acts as a cleaning agent as it should and cleaned all the material off which causes your car not only not to shift but clogges all the hydrolic ports and possibly your cooler. should never change your fluid on your own inless it looks good coming out.

this is probably gonna be a dumb question but i have to replace my transmission dip stick..from a dealer.. asked if my car would be a 3 speed or 4 speed.. how or where would i look to know the difference? (dont knw much about cars...but learning..)
well older Toyota transmission do have a dip stick for the transmission, but newer Toyota's do not have a dip stick and you need special tools and procedure to change the fluid correctly. same goes for Lexus and scion since they are all Toyota's
Hi Scotty i have had a new power steering gear replaced in my car now it squeels when i go slow and the steering wheel is quite hard to steer not nice easy and smooth at all is this normal for a new steering gear was it not lubed right or might it be a different problem i dont know what does your profesional insight know about this ?
@elenahuiscard Often they are not "new" but rebuilt, in which case they are often junk. I only advise using new ones, rebuilts ones often are done poorly. Scotty
I have a 2002 Cavalier with 90,000 miles and the transmission is starting to shift hard. Nothing has been changed on it...previous owner told me. Should I change the filter and do a drain-and-refill or just drive it until it grenades?
Scotty I have an issue I have a Ram 3500 cummins with the 48re Transmission I just recently replaced my batteries and now my truck wont go into overdrive??? I received these two codes p2509 ad p0483 which have nothing to do with the tranny fluid is still very clean changed maybe 15,000 miles ago any help would be greatly appreciated
@zrultima changing the battery often messes with computer memory. Get thee to a dealer and have them check the computer programming and see if anything needs resetting OR reprogramming. Scotty
Scotty-i have a 1990 buick lesabre with the 3.8 in it. Yesterday i noticed it takes the car at least 15 seconds to shift out of 1st into second, but from there on it shifts fine, but after stopping and going, same problem. Can you help. I'm poor and this car is all i got. Thanks.
@ULTRADREW1 then baby it, cause the tranny is starting to wear out. change the fluid and filter though, and put one quart of lucas tranny additive in, that may help some. Scotty
scotty, I understand that this is a partial tranny fluid change while there still a bit in the torque converter. My fluid is brownish right now. Someone said using a "cooling' line to drain it some more but I'm not sure how to do that. Would a partial change be alright or would my car need bigger drain/fluid change since its brownish
@need2speed75 I do not advise the use of flush machines if it works ok now, as it can cause problems flushing crud into small crevices. I only advise flushing in a tranny that has serious problems and you've got nothing to lose as it might help. Scotty
Hi Scotty, Just purchased a 99 Mitsu Eclipse GS and noticed the auto tranny fluid is brown, almost resemble fresh engine oil. I haven't notice any shifting problems yet. I believed it was last serviced around 55K miles few years ago (its 91K now). Should I bring it to a shop that does a complete a flush, but don't change the filter or a shop that does the drain/fill like the way you did? These chain stores claim that the power flush eliminate the need to change the filter..true or myth? Thanks!
scotty, I have a mitsu mirage w/ 185,000 miles, the trans fluid has never been changed (to my knowledge). I have been experiencing an on and off problem with hard up/ down shift around 1-2 gear. This has been going on for 3-4 years, sometimes it won't do it for months at a time. Should I change the fluid and put lucas trans sealant it it now with this many miles?
thanks!
ps. oh, and by the way, the trans fluid still looks decent colored on the dipstick

Hi Scotty. I have a 2002 Volvo S60 and the transmission is slipping badly so I am going to get my ATM fluid flushed and replaced with new fluid. Any recommendations on what fluid to use and also if you drain the fluid from the drain plug does all of the fluid gone or is there another method you have to do to get the remainder of the fluid out. Thanks
@darylgriffin111292 I can just about guarantee you that won't fix anything in that volvo, they have crapper trannies and yours probably needs rebuilding. But if you try, I'd use a full synthetic fluid and pray.Scotty
@scottykilmer hey scotty i watched your vid, i love all your vids. I saw that trans fluid was really bad and after two weeks, change the fluid again to get rid of the rest of the black stuff. My nissan pathfinders was brown and i refilled it, then after 2 weeks did it again. Now my fluid is crystal clean red =)
I have an 07' Mazda 6 with 120,000 miles, never changed the ATF. Would it be wise to do so or leave it be until problems arise, since new oil might cause slippage. Thanks.
@agera97 clean and then replace the maf sensor if cleaning doesn't help. they go bad on nissans all the time. if it runs ok after than and doesn't burn much oil or lose much coolant, then it's generally just too fast driving. Scotty
Dear Scotty, I own a 1994 BMW 325i Automatic. According to BMW, the Transmission fluid should never be changed! My car has 138,000 miles on it, what do you think I should do! This sounds a litle to good to be true even if it is in the owner's manual. Don't really want to take it to BMW Dealer as the car seems to be driving great!
Hey Scotty I have a 01 Honda civic I want to replace the trans oil""" wat do I all I need to do this job'''should I put some Lucas transmission sliptoo??
@lbaby512 they just have a drain plug, drain it out, put Honda fluid in, and one quart of lucas additive instead of one of the honda tranny quarts of fluid. Scotty
hi scotty!!!thank you, made great job here...please help me, i have a problem with my mitsubishi galant 95 automatic tranny, the engine shut down when i try to stop (apply break) while in reverse gear.thank you in advance...
@1430paulo If it only does it in R but not D, then reverse in the transmission is starting to wear out, binding and stalling the engine. typical on Mits, very weak trannies scotty
OK OK OK MR.Scotty Kilmer Toyota is the best .they just have a killer problems . but in fact the have a high quality ( that what the most people said in the Middle East) but I still believe in the U.S. industry and I have Tahoe Z71 2010 4×4
@999kuwaithunter you are obviously not a mechanic. Those "killer" problems are basically a made up prop by the media to sell american cars. strange that other countries didn't have them, only in the U.S. where U.S.media reported on them. Scotty
Hi Scotty, I have a question. I had a car given to me by a friend of the family. They hadn't cared for the vehicle very well through its life and the transmission shows this. It is a 1997 Acura Integra. The automatic transmission changes gears around 3500 rpm! Prior to giving me the car they tuned it up, put in a new radiator and flushed the tranny. I am wondering how long I could expect this tranny to last before failure. If I lay off the gas and keep the rpms at about 2200 it eventually shifts
scotty i have a 1996 caprice which i think never had its gearbox oil changed since we bought it new,it got 190000km on it which is over 100000 miles now i am told not to change oil be cause it will slip and the clutches are soaked and used to the old oil,is this true ? will it slip ? the oil is black like the one in this lexus you showed
Hey Scotty i know this may sound dumb but am new to cars, when you go under to drain the transmission, like how do you know its the transmission or the oil when going under the car?
I wish lucas transmission fix was that easy to pour lol stuff is like honey and ya gotta stand there all day it feels like waiting for it to seep down the tube
Nice video, but shouldn't you flush the trany before adding synthetic oil or any oil not specified by the manufacturer, just draining it only removes the oil in the pan and not in the converter which holds a lot. I flush the trany on my 94 Dodge Caravan every 35,000 miles and I use about 12 quarts of ATF 3+ to get it running clean.
Scotty, A mechanic told me my "Rear main cap" is leaking on my EL fairmont, I was wondering where this is located so I can repair it. Hopefully Australian cars are similar to US cars as far as engine component locations is concerned. thanks Jeremy
@coastdude27 I would assume that' the same as the rear main seal. You remove the drive shaft on the transmission to replace the rear main transmission seal, a pretty easy job. Scotty
@404Trucho noises are always hell to diagnose, I would advise putting it on a mechanics lift and run it to see if the noise will occur then, and it will be easy for him to hear the cause then with it up in the air. Could be tranny noise. Scotty
@beefystik Not really, I've use it and have seen it work. Slippage can occur for many reasons, and bad worn fluid is one of them. of course, from reading other comments you have made, it's obvious you are a complete obnoxious person, so such comments should be expected from one who knows very little about anything mechanical. Scotty
hey scotty i have a 03 corolla do u know if they have filters? and also is it ok to use synthetic ATF if it has never been synthetic before? it has 140kms on the car thank you for your time
I change my transmission fluid when as often as the manual says (50,000). Instead of using synthetic fluid, I use what the manual recommends (Dexron III). Also, Wix filters are better than Duralast. I don't use any additives in the transmission either. Always read the manual.
@scotty thanks for this video man. i had this fluid changed by ZAP LUBE, and i think they used the regular oil, but imma used switch to synthetic. QUESTION. before goin to full synthetic do i have to used a flush to clean the tranny out, or do the synthetic oil consumes all oil left in the tranny?
@scottykilmer~ Scotty, i used a little petroleum jelly to keep my tranny pan gasket in place while i bolted the pan onto the tranny. Now, im guessing a VERY small amount of this petro-jelly squeezed out between the gasket and would have ended up mixing with the ATF. Would this tiny amount of petro-jelly in the ATF make the clutches/bands slip more when shifting??.... because i think the gear changes are more sloppy than before. But im not 100% sure.
hey scotty i wanted to no how would i service a 1992 honda accord transmisson i was told they dont have filters on the trans so should i just change fluid
i have a question and it's a stupid one...is the transmission fluid the same where you would occasionally get an oil change? i have a kia optima 2004 and i want to change transmission fluid, not the "regular oil change" so i don't want to put the wrong fluid in the wrong place. Can you please help me?
When a transmission is having any kind of shift, or slip issue, i always was told to leave the fluid completly alone. that changing the fluid can make the problem worse because your removing what friction material that was in there that may be the only thing making the clutch packs still grab. If your transmission is doing anything funny and its not LOW on fluid, the damage has already been done and you will most likely make it worse by servicing it.
@bxtask88 that can be true, but it's a toss up. If it shifts like crap, sometimes changing the fluid helps, sometimes it makes it worse. But normal fluid changing should be done every 30 thousand miles to prevent this. Scotty
@toyota4life94 I've never done one, but the filter number is 3533028010. Go to a toyota dealer and look at that part number to see if it's a screen or a real filter. Scotty
is it better to provide a car shop with transmission oil and just pay them for labor. i heard that it is not like an oil change because there a nucks and cranny where the old transmission oil can hide and the shop has a machine that can flush out all the old oil. 05 5door mazda.
@Nestlewow no shop will do that, it cuts into their profit. but I don't believe in flushing as it often flushes crud into holes and causes problems. Scotty
@AGreedyTree the books are often wrong, and often show the wrong amount. Measuring it is always correct IF you check to make sure the fluid is full before changing it. Scotty
wow scotty didnt know that was so easy i will make sure i do this on my new car when i find one asap............ do u recommend using the lucas even though your not experiencing any problems ???/
great video the one thing i wanted to say is when you buy the trans fluid if you go to oreilys they will tell you which one and how much of the fluid you need

this is probably gonna be a dumb question but i have to replace my transmission dip stick..from a dealer.. asked if my car would be a 3 speed or 4 speed.. how or where would i look to know the difference? (dont knw much about cars...but learning..)
Blokheadz 3 months ago
well older Toyota transmission do have a dip stick for the transmission, but newer Toyota's do not have a dip stick and you need special tools and procedure to change the fluid correctly. same goes for Lexus and scion since they are all Toyota's

@blue06lt I'd try a filter and fluid change, and one quart of lucas tranny additive after you change it. Scotty

scotty, I understand that this is a partial tranny fluid change while there still a bit in the torque converter. My fluid is brownish right now. Someone said using a "cooling' line to drain it some more but I'm not sure how to do that. Would a partial change be alright or would my car need bigger drain/fluid change since its brownish
Thanks
need2speed75 3 months ago

Thanks!
need2speed75 3 months ago
@need2speed75 I would not flush it, that often causes problems. I would just change it. Scotty

scotty, I have a mitsu mirage w/ 185,000 miles, the trans fluid has never been changed (to my knowledge). I have been experiencing an on and off problem with hard up/ down shift around 1-2 gear.

If I lay off the gas and keep the rpms at about 2200 it eventually shifts

scottykilmer 6 months ago
Nice video, but shouldn't you flush the trany before adding synthetic oil or any oil not specified by the manufacturer, just draining it only removes the oil in the pan and not in the converter which holds a lot. I flush the trany on my 94 Dodge Caravan every 35,000 miles and I use about 12 quarts of ATF 3+ to get it running clean.

I change my transmission fluid when as often as the manual says (50,000). Instead of using synthetic fluid, I use what the manual recommends (Dexron III). Also, Wix filters are better than Duralast. I don't use any additives in the transmission either. Always read the manual.

scottykilmer 8 months ago
@scottykilmer~ Scotty, i used a little petroleum jelly to keep my tranny pan gasket in place while i bolted the pan onto the tranny. Now, im guessing a VERY small amount of this petro-jelly squeezed out between the gasket and would have ended up mixing with the ATF. Would this tiny amount of petro-jelly in the ATF make the clutches/bands slip more when shifting??.... because i think the gear changes are more sloppy than before. But im not 100% sure.

When a transmission is having any kind of shift, or slip issue, i always was told to leave the fluid completly alone. that changing the fluid can make the problem worse because your removing what friction material that was in there that may be the only thing making the clutch packs still grab. If your transmission is doing anything funny and its not LOW on fluid, the damage has already been done and you will most likely make it worse by servicing it.
bxtask88 9 months ago
@bxtask88 that can be true, but it's a toss up. If it shifts like crap, sometimes changing the fluid helps, sometimes it makes it worse. But normal fluid changing should be done every 30 thousand miles to prevent this. Scotty
scottykilmer 9 months ago

is it better to provide a car shop with transmission oil and just pay them for labor. i heard that it is not like an oil change because there a nucks and cranny where the old transmission oil can hide and the shop has a machine that can flush out all the old oil. 05 5door mazda.
