The league needed this because the original six format was dying up until 66 and the flyers win ensured that the league which expanded in 67 would survive. First expansion team to win the stanley cup........this win paved the way for the league to survive. The league needed this because the original six format was dying up until 66 and the flyers win ensured that the league which expanded in 67 would survive. The victory though 7 years after expansion helped future teams by ensuring they too could profit and be competitive wit the right resources. Would there be an edmonton? how about the islanders? or een the penguins all the way up until 90?

The conferences were not geographically aligned then. It started when they expanded from 6 to 12 and put the expansion teams in their own division to guarantee one of them (St. Louis) would make the Finals.
