They don't make bands like this anymore. The Teardrop Explodes' American debut album, "Kilimangaro" came out the same week in 1980 as "Boy", U2's debut album. "Kilimanjaro" stirred up a lot more excitement and good reviews in the music press than "Boy" . At the time Julian Cope complained that U2 was "ripping off" the Teardrop Explodes and other Liverpool/Manchester groups. He was probably right. Thanks for posting this great snapshot of a great group.
@NunzOnDrugs Yeaah, I completely agree with you..bands today are so dull, and you look at bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s and they were more interesting, and had more bite....today's bands are just limp.
I wasn't even alive when the Teardrop Explodes were around and they mean more to me than today's music
Whoever uploaded this...where do you live? Don't mean to be nosy, but I just wanted to know where to drop off a crate of beer for uploading this. I've been looking for a live version of this song for yonks. One of my all time favourite tunes. Not as good as the studio version, but it has it's highlights. Balfe singing is quite funny. What an arsehole!
Balfe is the weedy looking keyboard player. To find out why he's an arsehole, you need to read Cope's book 'Head On/ Repossessed' , his account of his years in the Teardrop Explodes.
The weedy keyboard player is actually session musician Jeff Hammer. Along with base player Alfie Agius, they were recruited in late 1980 to play on the "Out of the Culture Bunker " tour of the USA, Canade Europe and the UK in spring /summer 1981 while Cope took up front man duties. Balfe had fallen out with Cope not in this version of the group, however he was back in the group to record Wilder, after Cope tired of pop stardom. Apparently, Balfe was a boss shagger !!
Same fella. The Teardrop Explodes in 1981 were a very tight live band and they spent the first part of the year touring the USA, Canada and Europe extensively. They graced the cover of every music paper/mag and were hot property, Cope was a contender. They spent the late summer/autumn recording Wilder and during this period Agius and Hammer were binned.
