I think what Rex is speaking of, is we need a Ron Paul type politician, in Canada. Someone who speaks the truth, even if it seems wildly unpopular among his or her colleges.
We need someone ahead of their time, but somehow manages to reach people. We need someone who`s objective is not to get re-elected, but to contribute to our nation.
Rex is right when we says there seems to be barely a lick of difference between any of the parties. This is, of course, due to the fact that people are frightened of change and would not vote for a party they deemed to be very different from what they're used to. And if a party hopes to be elected, they won't rock the boat too much. It is, therefore, difficult to see how any real changes for the country's benefit will ever be implemented.
@walperstyle I think you've misunderstood Rex Murphy. He didn't say that he wanted more politicians; he said that politics should be as large as the country. He wants greater vision and less partisan pettiness from Canada's leaders.
@RFranklinCarter Thats interesting because our politics are setup that way as is. You have a local representative you vote for that should best represent you. If it doesn't then you have the ability to run yourself.
Yes, the parties are all the same: sock puppets for the warmongering banksters. In 2007 Canada had a surplus budget...now Canada owes $160,000,000. a day !!! As a tax payer (for gas, food, water, power etc) are YOU willing to give money to the federal government who supports the Israeli perpetration of genocide on the Palistinens ? Do YOU want YOUR money paying for the MURDER of 10's of thousands of civilians around the globe ? this fall & winter REVOLT!! do not pay taxes to these scum...
@JonathanSeagullUtube How about you revolt and see how that works out for you, while the rest of us who have a brain won't need to worry about your paranoid, bleeding heart ass.
@URProductions So you've never been shot at, eh little boy ? Neither have you been been to war and did what your upper rank tells you to do that will fu<k you up for life...never been shot up and thrown into an open grave for dead with all your shot dead relatives piled on top of you while you wait for the terrorists (soldiers) to go....we all have a brain, some have more information than others... Yep, you're owned by the banksters and the govern mentals. MAN UP little boy, stop watchingTV
The main reason as to why many of us are not intrested in politics is because most Canadians don't know much about their history, traditions, culture (or the lack of it) and I can go on and on. To be honest, we deserve what we have. Half of the nation don't even vote.
What we need is to change over to the system of proportional representation for electing our parliaments. If you would like to bring anout this change please contact me at wfrolls@mymts.net
Rex - it's time to pack it in bud - you're looking way too old and scary !
Wish the CBC had more inspiring reporters ... and better looking .. How come CNN gets Kate Bolduan, Mara Wilcox, Amber Lyon, Brooke Anderson, Fredricka Whitfield, Anderson Cooper and we get Rex Murphy ?
@IamLate4You Or Gretchen Carlsson, Megan Kelly, Martha McCallum, Ansley Earnhard and the rest of the most beautiful and smart women per just one news channel and Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, Bill Hemmer and now Canadian (from Toronto) John Roberts, and the channel is: FOX NEWS, the most watched news channel in USA & CDA, what about that?
Who the hell watches CBC nowadays, besides O'Leary & that juicy socialist hooter show (7pm) you feel like somebody dies every day.
One big difference between Barack and Francophone comparisons is that French Canada was one of the founding nations of Canada. If anything is a decent comparison it would be electing a First Nations or aboriginal PM that would be controversial to some people in Canada. Culturally I would argue Black and First Nations had similar social roles in the two countries development, that is, they were marginalized and stigmatized to some extent. Either way each, political system has its downside.
ive watched cpac and this goverment are like puppets full of greed and lust. do what i say not what i do........because im scum of the earth and need to get as much money as i can .... i promise! you will burn for it as did those before you!,, so really! think before you really act upon your desires...
Kim Campbell being defeated in an election some how removes any significance of her role in Canadian politics? If thats your standard, then I guess Winston Churchill's defeat should cast doubt on his significance to history.
Terribly sorry for insulting your rah rah US e-peen. I seem to have struck a nerve.
We have 13 Provinces/Territories compared to the US's 50, so obviously there are more opportunities for a diverse representation in the state legislature then provincial, nevermind Nunavut.
I think Rex is one of those people that look at the US and think, "their politics are interesting, why can't ours be too?". But the reason the US is so interesting is because it is really ****ed up. The American political system makes a farce out of democracy, and I don't want Canada to end up the same.
The American political system is messed up. Agreed, I don't think anyone would disagree with you here. But our candidates are more diverse then Canada's. Which is funny cause we are portrayed as the racist and conservative country.
We have Indian governors, female governors, females speakers of the legislatue, black governors, latino govenors, muslim congressman, 3 elected females justices on the Supreme court, and of course an elected black presidents. While Canada has rich, old boys.
We have just as diverse a house of parliment as the US in terms of minority representation, if not more. We have had a female prime minister (albiet for a short period of time) I would suspect that if you broke down the demographics that the US has an increased percentage of old white men then Canada in politics, and especially in the cabinet of their elected officials.
Ha your female Prime Minister experienced the worst electoral defeat in Canadian history. She was never democratically elected. You had female governor Generals of minority background but they were APPOINTED, never elected by the people or sent through a vetting process, and your Supreme court has never had any non caucasians! Never confirmed by your parliament, 1 female supreme court justice, but just appointed. You only had a female Premier of the Yukon, but never of the major provinces.
We have our minorities in leadership positions, we don't just put them in the backbenches and scream diversity, multiculturalism, mosaic... We just don't lie and minorities emerge as leaders.
I've studied Canadian politics in academia, I know what I'm talking about.
@gundamWWW Yeah, as long as they speak English, talk about Jesus non-stop, and never question any of your sacred cows, you're FINALLY willing to let women out of the kitchen and blacks sit at the front of the bus and sometimes even drive and beep the horn if they say the right things.
We don't flip if people translate our national anthem. We don't have immigration quotas for certain countries. We tolerate opinion to the point of separatism. You guys put on a good show. But we actually live it.
@gundamWWW 250 years and you finally get around to letting an African American be president. Well, we've had two immigrant women as Governor-Generals already. When are you going to elect a president whose first language is Spanish? We elected our first francophone prime minister in 1896. We've had foreign-born people heading our government; you're such xenophobes that Benedict Arnold could constitutionally have been your president, but Albert Einstein couldn't.
Your 2 immigrants women were never elected by the people. They were just apppointed. That's not better then Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan. If they were democratically elected in a free, fair and open election that yeah you would have a hand up.
2# I think it's unreasonable to compare the plight of Franophone Canadians with African Americans... While both were marginilized, it was not even close.
#3 The US constitution isn't perfect either. All your PM's were either Canadian or British loyalists.
@gundamWWW "Your 2 immigrants women were never elected by the people."
So what? The point is that being "2 immigrant women" didn't stop them from being appointed to the highest office in the land, nor did it present any problem for the Canadian public. It was a mark of pride. We didn't have half the country storming up and down calling them communists, bending over backward to find ways to make them constitutionally ineligible, or going on about their middle names.
@gundamWWW "I think it's unreasonable to compare the plight of Franophone Canadians with African Americans"
Of course you do.
Now, if you'd elected a black president in 1896, while we were just getting around to electing our first francophone PM, oh, THAT you'd be all over like white on rice. You didn't even elect a CATHOLIC until 1960. And haven't since.
@gundamWWW "All your PM's were either Canadian or British loyalists."
But they don't have to be. Remember that line from Schoolhouse Rock, "so ANY kid could be the president"? Which is BS if you arrived 10 seconds after you were born? Well, with regard to OUR highest elective office, it actually IS true. We're not a nation of xenophobes flopping around looking for Kenyan birth certificates. What a disgrace.
One thing that your political system has over Canada is the mandatory release of a candidate's health records to the public. There is a growing resentment in Quebec over what happened in the case of Jack Layton.
More than a few Quebeckers have said that they would not have voted NDP if they had known how sick Layton was. The secrecy around Layton's health records and his 'second cancer' has lead many to speculate that Layton lied about his chances of survival.
Canadians took Jack Layton's word for it that he was completely out of danger.. Some have speculated that the unidentified 2nd cancer was actually an advanced stage of the 1st cancer. If that was the case then Layton was never out of danger. The release of Layton's health records at the beginning of his campaign would have eliminated the possibility of him lying about his chances of survival. Secrecy surrounding the health of a would-be P.M. is a weakness in the Canadian system.
